On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

That's a really nice post Nevelon, I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment.

I would like to do the same but quite often only have so much space, and it competes with other interests. There are some books though that are very special to me; Rogue Trader, the 2nd ed books, Epic, Warhammer WHFB 4-6th books. It is nice having them to hand, and then every now and again having a flick through.

All the expansions, army cards and White Dwarf articles - mostly from 2nd Ed Space Marine FB groups being hugely generous. Hit me up if there's anything you need MDG, we're very comfortable in this particular rabbit hole ;-)

Oooooh! I’ll take PDFs of the WD articles. Other books I prefer to have the Real McCoy!

I'll wager there's not much in it between us... WeTransfer, like Dropbox, is a free service for sending files that are too big to fit in an email, and there's about 50Mb of PDFs and pics. It's easy, PM me with an email address, you'll get a link, you click on it, download the files.

2nd Ed Rules gubbins arrived.

I am very, very lucky! Whilst not complete (only 4 vehicle cards, and none are Ablative Armour), it does contain a lot of cards and bits from WD. You can tell on account they’re a thinner card stock, and have the remains of the perforations around their edges.

Reckon I’ll just hunt down images of the original Vehicle Cards and go from there.

Right, all caught up on this most entertaining of threads, and discovered I've got 3 years or so on the good Mad Dok

As well as the Epic stuff I've got some 2nd Ed Codexes in PDF form which I am more than happy to wing over MDG? I know it's not the same as the real thing but better than nothing.

Also, let me regale you with our own not-entirely-planned foray into 2nd Ed: https://skinflintgames.wordpress.com/2017/11/09/ooops/

(Having said that, the Dark Millenium supplement we picked up had a good few duplicate vehicle cards - if you're missing anything, let me know, I'll check through the pile)

Codex Assassins and Sisters of Battle have both arrived.

I’m now just three books off a complete set.

It is weird just how few Codexes 2nd Ed had. Sure, Dark Eldar, Tau and Necrons were more things of the future (Necrons of course being tacked on right at the end), but they still got so much out of those few books.

And yes this is almost certainly Rose Tinted Glasses, and genuinely hazy memory given it was so long ago, but the game didn’t feel limited by them.

Also, amused myself to see an early mention of Dark Eldar in Codex Assassins.

I don't pop into the forum for a bit and now find an entire thread dedicated to old editions, very cool.

My entire collection is prominently made up of either 2nd edition 40k era miniatures, some 3rd edition or a 3rd/4th edition Warhammer Fantasy. So this has been a fun read.

The other issue is purely sentimental. Not just with the GW stuff, but other games on the shelf. I could box it up and store, or deal with figuring out the mechanics of selling it. But having it on the shelf is a touchstone for a happier time. Seeing those books and game boxes reminds me of the halcyon days of my youth, long past.

From a practical POV, most of it just takes up space and I should re-home it to someplace it would be more loved. But it would be like cutting off my link to the past for some of it. I could sit down and see which items “spark joy” and which are just there. But that would take time and emotional energy, which I don’t have.

So inertia wins, and stuff stays.

I have this same "problem" I have over 30 years worth of old gaming books, minis, maps, box sets etc. that I haven't touched in 20 years and really do not see myself touching them in the next 50. But I just can't bring myself to get rid of them. So many memories are tied to those books, and I just keep saying to myself... Those are mine, why shouldn't I keep them. Especially since I have the room to store them keeping them visible, if only for my own light trips down memory lane.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I try and keep a few books from games that I really enjoyed or specific editions etc. Mostly 40k 1st through 4th edition and some favourite codex books, as well as 4th-6th WHFB. I will be honest 7th edition 40k went to a local charity shop

Just mulling over whether to blow way too much money on a copy of Epic Space Marine: Armies of the Imperium (from 2nd edition) - complete! I definitely used to have it though, and I know as soon as I order it I'll find my copy hidden somewhere in the corner of the attic

I know the feeling. i have pretty much all the codex we need for our retro games of 5th ed 40k. just got the 4th ed demon codex, black templar and the 5th ed dark eldar codex in. i think the only ones i do not have now are the 7th ed GSC, death watch and knights (somebody at the shop has that last one)

On an interesting side note the owner of the store put loads of her late husband's 2nd ed 40K minis in the store display case. They are sooo tiny even compared to mid 5th ed 40K scale. chaos terminators are the size of current guardsman. It is a great thing to see.

With the 2011/2012 updates to stormshields and missile launchers the 4e BT and DA books are surprisingly playable in 5th. What they lack in the unit variety of 5e Marines they make up for in some surprisingly effective terminators, and the templars have some reasonably costing firepower too though they lost their ability to zeal into combat (and as it came up a few times back in 5th, as a consolidation move it was up to d6", not must move d6").

Daemons I remember as being powerful for their cost and entirely hamstrung by their deployment, and DE I recall as having an unintended but amusing 'raider boarding torpedo' maneuver where they would ram a target vehicle from clean across the board with the intention of blowing up their own raider - the rules in that edition didn't have anything more than a pinning test to stop passengers assaulting out of a crater.

I also own the Armageddon codex so i now have both sets of similar rules for the black templar. the vows and other thematic bits make them unique compared to the core SM book from 5th. the consolidation roll for their vows and righteous zeal can be affected by crusader seals.

I got the demon codex for our chaos players for some variety of units to work into their 3.5 chaos list.

We just did our first game with the dark eldar and it was VS tau. it was a brutal battle. the mission was table quarters and the dark eldar pulled off a narrow 1 point win.

As a side note my dark angels only show up on the table with the original 3.5 mini dex. it is my first codex i ever got for 40K and even though i own 4th, 5th and 6th versions 3.5 is still the one i like the most and still use.

It's worth noting that the 4e daemons were priced and statted as units that would be deepstruck with limited control and no assault on that turn and should probably not be used with the 3.5 or 4e summoning rules.

(to put that in context the generic 4e bloodletter has something like 250% of the striking power of the 3.5 letter point for point, strikes first, and doesn't have uncontrolled movement - what they lack in durability is lost when you summon them directly into a combat)

Of course the 4e daemon deployment was not great either, and a basic board deployment with the option to deepstrike may help.

Just engaged in a massive reorganization of our family library.
My RT books, complete collection of Second Edition books and various the 7th/8th Codices that my son and I use for fluff in Grimdark Future all made the cut. Most of the rest of the 40k material went back to the shelves (still accessible though) in the closet.

I've come to this mixed place where Grimdark Future is our ruleset and most of our fluff and inspiration comes from whichever of the most recent Codex editions (which tend to line up very well with GDF) we can get our hands on for around 10 bucks. However, when I want to crack an old game book for reading enjoyment it's usually Second edition(where I started) or Rogue Trader.

Easy as breakfast, to quote an Ogryn sergeant ;-)

"no, problem" he rumbled, "We showed them skinny eldar. Come on lads says I we're gonna go over there and bury them in their own holes, no worries. There was no worries about cover, cos there wasn't any cover. No worries about timing, cos us lads were first in. Easy as breakfast."

"I'll never get used to those brutes." he said to his Orderly. "he ought to be screaming with pain, but they wont even lay down and die until they got enough holes in them to fell a Banda tree. He's the only survivor of a entire platoon and all he could think about when they dragged him back was whether the Emperor would be pleased with him and what was going to happen to the others rations packs.!"

I really miss the old 40k short stories. They just had 'it'. Kinda like a really good wrestler, you can't put your finger on it but you know they have 'it'.

Also the 2nd ed nid dex was horrible the table you had to roll on was just down right broken sometimes. "Jones is acting strange" and the one that had the barbed strangler in the vehicles sucked as a guard player.

I think my fav GW game second edition epic. I got afew of the 1st ed 'space marine' box sets on sale to help bulk out my army. I also got a killer deal on a epic army at the time, 30 bucks for about 3000 points of IG tanks and vehicles and about a dozen titans.
there is a good scene around here for epic, but the pricing of the old models just blows me away. Just like MDG I've been thinking of getting a 3d printer. Seems like so much you could do with it.

This was a amazing thread to read through. It hit me right in the feels. So many good old GW books. I loved the boxtree books with Space Marine being my fav. There is just something great about chaplain Moon listening to each marine and defecating out their sins and weakness.
To this day when I have a good Idea the GF says "oh, Biff had a thunk". Yes I forced her to read it. She says it was alright, but she still quotes it to me sometimes.

@Shuma, that's a great looking army mate. Well jealous of the dreadnoughts and battlewagon - I've spent a lot on second hand lead and they are still just out of my price range, so I'm converting gsc kits instead. Might go for castellen robots for the dreads.

I agree with FabricatorGeneralMike (I was going to initialise, but thought better of it!) about the joy of the early flavour text. There’s definitely just something atmospheric about it.

Without knocking any era or holding any above another? I think that in a setting as completely bonkers as 40K, to have such focussed and individual points of view over is super personal. The Ogryn quote really paints a picture of their species outlook. And having the response from a Medicae type further sets it by offering the familiar human perspective.

We get much the same in the flavour story for Nork Deddog. In fact there’s a lot to like and I suppose be horrified at with regards to Nork.

Nork Deddog wrote: Da Sergeant Major asked me what my job was an' I said it was to, uh, do what I was told. He said I was a genius and gave me another medal. I likes da Imperial Guard!

About Nork Deddog wrote: His reputation for loyalty is unsurpassed and his skills as a bodyguard are in high demand by Imperium officers across the sector. When Ork Warboss Uglurk Gitsmasha and his hardest mob of Meganobz charged an Imperial Guard command dugout, Nork Deddog was the only one to stand his ground beside Sub-overlord Ven Vambold. Nork killed the massive Ork Warlord with a single, extremely violent headbutt that left the remaining Orks totally awestruck and they retreated rather than face the angry Ogryn bodyguard.

Yes he’s absolutely rock hard and clearly enjoys his job/career/posting. But juxtaposed with his childlike outlook, I can’t help but feel bad for how they exploit him and his folk.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
We don’t see to get as many personal insights as we did nowadays, but then the setting itself has expanded massively.

I don’t mind what we get these days, I particularly enjoy reading campaign book fluff. But I wouldn’t object to a bit of both.

I got the two 'Egg' Dreads off ebay for about £40 for the pair so not too bad; had to scrounge up some heavy weapons from the bits box though as they came with one too many power claws

Yeah the battlewagons are now super expensive, got mine from ebay pro-painted using gift money... only way to get one.

Been a while, but given a fresh thread seems wasteful, hopefully this threadomancy can be understood.

Getting back to rounding off my 2nd Ed Epic collection this year. Just need a copy of Titan Legions, and the relevant WD back issues.

Plus, it’s Warhammer’s 40th Anniversary, so what a year to be adding to historical collections!

Today’s Warhammer Community article also says ” There’s plenty more to come throughout the year, including some reveals we guarantee you won’t be expecting, so sign up to our newsletter to make sure none of them pass you by.”

I’m kind of hopeful for RT and RoC style reprints, as I’m sure that’s something they can Print To Order and find a market!
