I have begun constuction on my very first truescale marine and I planned to used it to make Pre- or Mid-Heresy Luna Wolves (Sons of Horus) army. The HH series covered the Luna Wolves a long time ago so I don't quite remember what their characteristics were. Such as shooty or close combat oriented, for example. I need a fluff update. Also, should I use the SM codex or the CSM codex to best fit their characteristics and fighting styles?

I'm not sure what to say about the codex usage. My take on the L. Wolves was that they were rather balanced, similar to the Ultramarines (combat, not doctrine). They fell in the middle, not extreme like traits of other chapters.

In Horus Rising it goes on a fair bit about their speartip attacks, whereby one unit leads from the front and others follow in a speartip formation. Although it only once ( i think) actually says this in terms of battle formation as aposed to a campaign strategy. Either way, it says something about them.
But as jabbakahut says you're looking mainly at a vanila chapter like the Ultramarines.

Ok so they were well rounded. I just remember something about them being a really good offensive army, supposedly the best. Was that them or some other legion I'm confusing them with?
I don't have the new space marine codex so I don't know how it plays compared to the old one or my CSM codex. So I can't decide what codex would better fits their traits. If I went CSM then I would want to take berserkers because they're awesome (though they would be painted Luna Wolves style). I'd also probably take normal chaos marines since they're cheaper. But if I went SM I don't have the slightest clue what I would take because I don't know what they have access to at this point. Can anyone help me out?
Mostly, I just want the best codex to fit their fluff. Right now it sounds like a vanilla SM army seems to fit the bill. But what would I take?

They were suposedly the best marines at everything pre-sons of horus.
And are you going to do Luna Wolves or Sons of Horus. if you're doing Lunna Wolves i'd go with the sm codex. The sons of horus may be different.

They claimed to be the best at everything except, I think, defense. I believe even they said the Imperial Fists were the best defense.
Anyway, I'm not sure whether I want Sons of Horus or Luna Wolves. Both sound cool. What would you suggest and why?

I would use the vanilla dex to start with.
hounds where an all round balanced force, didnt really lean in any direction when it came to attacls or defence.
but they allways managed to get the mission at hand done 100% with no problems (eat that smurf boyz)
all in all, they were the perfect marines.
i would go with luna hounds simply for the fluff and fun of it all.

Yep that does ring a bell. In fact if i recall corectly the statement was that they didn't match the fists in defense or the space wolves in attack but were overall the best rounded chapter.
I'd go with the Sons of Horus, on a modelng level I'd reckon they would be more fun to make.

If I went Luna Wolves then their armor would be grey right? Also, what color was Horus' armor before the heresy. I can't remember and I plan on making him once my sculpting skills are up to the challenge. I would also probably make the Mournival but I can't remember the four characters. I think there was Garviel Loken and Abaddon, who were the others?

If I went Sons of Horus then would their armor still be grey? Because I didn't think it was painted black until Horus died and Abaddon took over. I could put more icons on their armor, like the Eye of Horus (cool...). With Sons of Horus I could throw in some demons here and there which would be cool (if they used demons at that time). No more mournival though, but a crazy strong Horus would take their place. Hmm....a lot to think about.
More ideas are welcome.

The Luna Wolves combat doctrine seemed to mostly revolve around 'kill the head and the body dies'. But, overall, they were a pretty balanced force. Realize that pre-heresy, jump packs were pretty rare. I think a strong base of tactical marines, with some devestators, tanks, and terminators would be a good start.
I think you could use either the SM or CSM codex. With SM codex, you'd have to skip some selections that either weren't around pre-Heresy or were rare (like razorbacks, assault cannons, some infantry heavy weapons). CSM has more pre-Heresy equipment - Reaper autocannons and infantry carried autocannons.

The mournival members were Abadon, Loken, Tarik Torgadon and "little horus" Aximand. There's also Maloghurst (horus' right hand man) and a host of others like Iacton Qruze. The mournival were still together for a short while after the change from Luna Wolves to SOH so you could still do them. If you want to do SOH post Istvaan III then Torgadon, Loken and Qruze wont be there.
As for the colour Luna Wolves are white with black trim and SOH are greyish green (pictures here.). Horus is shown in standard Luna Wolves colours in some artwork pre SOH. The terminators will always be black as like the deathwatch in DA they wore different colours to the rest of the chapter.

Thanks for the input. I think I will just go with CSM because then I don't have to worry so much about what to avoid. Also, it happens to have the stats of a lot of important characters around the time period I'm basing the army on.

I had forgotten about Maloghurst and Iacton Qruze. Thanks for the update. Also, I appreciate the link, now I know the legion colors. I just need to figure out what that green color translates to in Citadel paints. I'm assuming rotting flesh mixed with skull white or bleached bone in order to lighten it up would work.

Just as something to throw out there. What would anyone think of a world eater or death guard army? Would this be cooler then the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus?
I know the fluff makes the World Eaters look like crazy angels of death and the Death Guard look kind of reserved and quiet.

so are you makign an army liek me or a life sized model if you are making a list use the online one for times of haresy at belloflostsouls.com under minidex downloads and if you just want to use the current list take alot of tactical and for the record they where very well ballanced and did any thing to win (the best examle of this is when loken first fought lucius and after warning him he would do anything to win he pairied lucius's sword and pouched him in the face winning the fight) they used chain swords alot. The reason Horus was picked to be the warmaster was no his likness to the emporer it was he NEVER LOST. Go luna wolves.

I'm making truescale as in models slightly bigger than the ones GW makes. I'm using GS to make body bigger in order to make the head look a normal size. And that fight was awesome, I remember reading that.
