Hey all,

Ive started painting my Ultramarines Dread from the AoBR set and I'm enjoying painting it so much I thought I'd put some WIP shots up here. It really is a fun model to paint, lots of little gribbly things and gizmo's

Anyway I'll put some pics of my other Ultra guys here later and update it as I go along with my army

Here is the dreadnought as he is at the moment. I'm thinking of putting some weathering and battle-damage on him but I'm terrified of screwing it up

Sorry about the quality of the photos they were taken quickly with the crappy camera, I'll get better ones when he is done.

So, just a small update today.

The sarcophagus is done now, next ill work my way up the back. Its taking a while but its getting there. I paint as a passtime and it sure passes the time

I'm not sure what to do with the two scrolls, I think I might try using the home decal printing stuff to do the text, that way I can control the font used as im sure i cant paint well enough for that.

still not sure about the wear and tear, I'm getting to like it the way it is.

Just updating with what I have managed to get done recently. Working my way up the back of the dread.

Boy these guys take some painting ! I GOTTA get a spray guy before I tackle my Landraider.

oh, and I'm slightly annoyed that the AoBR dread doesn't have the Adeptus Mechanicus cog molded around the skull on the back plate. I'm going to try and freehand it.

Managed to get the cog on there freehand, and finished off the left hand rear paneling. Now back to the front to do the side pods.

Unfortunately the photos completely blow out the white of the skull and the cog and all the shading is lost. you'll just have to trust me that its there.

Another update.

This time I've managed to find time to work on the front again.

Also my Ven has started the long road to completion.

I'm taking a slightly different approach with this one and doing some of the painting while its still in pieces.

This is also the most complex attempt at basing I've tried yet. The slabs will have some yellow lines painted on them to look like the surface of a road, but I'm still not sure how to paint the broken pipe. I'm thinking maybe a terracotta colour. Ideas ?

Hi

That's looking really awesome. I actually like the nice clean lines of the Dread - well done. Looks cool even if you don't weather it.

As far as the script goes, I get an artists fineline pen and write on the script that I want (I also use it on Ork checks). You have much better control.

Paint the pipe like oxidised metal. I'm pretty sure brother argos has a tutorial in his steel legion blog.

P.S. you took my advice on the symbol! Yayses!

I know. I'm evil.
I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff. And I want in.

That looks pretty amazing! Keep up the great work, and please be sure to let us see some of the normal troopers when you get a chance!

I'm especially wowed by the freehanded Mechanicus cog, if you hadn't mentioned that it was freehand, I never would have guessed.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I really appreciate the encouragement.

Gutteridge : I have the following metals that I use as base and highlight :-
Boltgun and Mithril
Shining and Burnished Gold
Tin Bitz and Dwarf Bronze
Over these I use various washes to get different effects, Sepia wash over Mithril silver for a Brass efect, Ogryn Flesh over Dwarf Bronze makes a great copperish colour. Mix in a couple of washes of Badab Black or Devlan Mud here and there and you get a LOT of possible effects. The thing I like about this stuff is that there is really no WRONG way to do it, just keep playing till you get something you like. The little nameplate on the back started as Boltgun metal and got so many washes that it looks more like Tin Bitz now

Mr Grey : I totally forgot about putting the regular marines up here.

The guy with the 'facemask?' was my first ever space marine, then I painted the other four, then the Sergeant was the last of these to be finished. Even within these few, and the Dread I think my painting is improving The markings are all freehand too btw.

I posted these elsewhere on this forum already but I thought I should put them here too for completeness.

At last another update !

The right arm is pretty much finished. I haven't finished the 'nozzle' yet, the bit painted a base of 'tin bitz' because it sticks out and is just too handy for resting my finger on when painting. This is also why i haven't painted the top of the model a all. Ill paint these bits at the very end. I also have to put the white dot in the upper left of the lens.

Anyway, here are the pics.

So, on to the left arm and its the home stretch for this guy.

I found out that the local games club is holding a tournament in September which may include a painting comp, so I might enter this guy. or the Ven' if some sort of miracle happens and he is painted in time.

Are the squad guys from AoBR, and did you modify any?

I hate Ultramarines with an undying passion. Hitler appears quite modest when compared to my hatred of these blue...THINGS!

So take heed of that fact when I swallow part of my pride and say this; that Dread ain't half bad, yo!

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

L C Mik: The first four guys were not part of the AoBr set, they were the four plastic marines you can buy in a little box on their own. I got them as a test to see if I liked painting them at all, and if I was any good. Until now I had only really painted fantasy mini's from other manufacturers...

Phryxis: I start off with a black undercoat obviously, then Midnight blue for the darkest recesses and cracks, (going to have to change over to Necron Abyss foundation from now on as the midnight is OOP and I'm almost out.) Then a regal blue base coat, followed by a highlight of 50/50 Regal and Enchanted. The final highlights are pure Enchanted Blue. I'm not a fan of hard line highlighting, actually I'm fine with other people doing it, I just don't like it when I do it. So I find this method gets a look of soft shading I like, and the colours make them very, very blue.

The reds are P3 Sanguine Base, followed by Sanguine highlight, the Valejo Flat Red and then a light wash of Valejo Transparent red for the very bright/deep reds such as purity seals.
