Those Empire soldiers wear old uniforms based on the previous range of plastics, so based on that the art is pretty old. I'd say they are facing a daemon of sorts, mainly because it lacks symmetry.
Or it could be something of a fen / bog creature, the "legs" look more like roots, maybe this is an old piece of art from the Albion supplement?
