I like a lot of the heavy stuff, like Bolt Thrower and Metallica, but not crazy gak like Cannibal Corpse and Slipknot. There's a fairly thick line between music and screaming. Honestly, what kind of band puts out songs like 'feth me with a knife'?

And I hate rap. Just a bunch of hooligans in beanies stringing together lame lyrics too fast to hear.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

You should check out some RollDeep/EvilNine. Not my favourite genre but damn good all the same.

I prefer the old punk scene, maybe the Violent Femmes: 'Gimme the car' as my fave. Having said that, i've been listening to alot of Chiasm and Ladytron recently; go go gadget electro!

Personally, I think Opera has some awsome stuff in it, though I don't exactly like listening to any operas created after the turn of the century, same goes for classical except for some russian stuff.

Since I don't download its rather hard to get my hands on these things as I don't exactly buy muich music, so I get a lot of it from the major library in town that has a decent collection. Currently Im liking Die Walkure and Gotterdamerung by Wagner.

Listen to some Public enemy or Cypress Hill before making such sweeping generalizations. It's no more accurate that saying that all Metal bands are just meatheads playing dull and abrasive rifts over repetitive drumming (though many are), all Indie bands are dull shoe gazers (again many are) or all dance music is the same (though I concede much is).

95% of any genre is crap. Finding the 5% of music that's great is the key.

I don't. I judge you on how you act.

I don't like much that is labelled as hip-hop or rap these days. I like some of what PE had to say, and as to CH, really, I get that they like the reefer, but really, constantly riffing on the theme was getting monotonous.

I subscribe to "Sturgeon's Law" (Theodore Sturgeon is an SF writer. He came up with the "90% of everything is crap" line.). The trick is in finding the 10% that you don't consider crap.

I'll listen to most music. Some dance is ok - most I consider to repetitive or derivative. I have jazz, blues, some metal, some rock (yes "classic" rock, and some MOR. I'm old, it's what we like.) even some classical and opera.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I have 60's and a little 70's soul music from Motown that I got on a collectors disc compilation or somesuch. Most of it was pretty good but then again its the best music of that genre for most of a decade.

I don't know how to reply... there's so many sub-genre's I don't want to attempt to list their genre. I can give links though two my two favorite songs each is in a different genre. From what I'm told Psyclon Nine is aggrotech and Dark Trqanquility is melodic deathmetal.

aggrotech...wtf!

this is my main issue with music nowadays, everytime a band comes along with a new sound or does something different a new sub-genre has to be created why? why can't metal just be metal and dance music just be dance music etc I ask you?

Huh? Ok maybe some genre split offs are fairly unnecessary but do you know how many sub-genres there are in dance and how different they are? I DJ part time, if someone requested a trance record when I was playing out dnb, for one I'd wonder why they came when it clearly stated i was playing such and such, then I'd ask them to try matching two records one of which is over a hundred bpm faster than the other.

Spliting genres into sug-genres is just a practicality.

That is pretty much what I meant, it seems to happen with more so with rock/metal music than it does dance music I can instantly tell a Trance track from a DnB track, but much of it just seems so unnecessary and to be fair pretentious

Metal I note is really bad for this sort of thing, the list below is taken directly from wikipedia:

#

* 1.1 Black metal
* 1.2 Death metal
* 1.3 Doom metal
* 1.4 Drone metal
* 1.5 Folk metal
* 1.6 Glam metal
* 1.7 Gothic metal
* 1.8 Groove metal
* 1.9 Industrial metal
* 1.10 Metalcore
* 1.11 Neo-classical metal
* 1.12 Nu metal
* 1.13 Post-metal
* 1.14 Power metal
* 1.15 Progressive metal
* 1.16 Sludge metal
* 1.17 Speed metal
* 1.18 Stoner metal
* 1.19 Thrash metal
* 2.1 Alternative metal
* 2.2 Avant-garde metal
* 2.3 Christian metal
* 2.4 Extreme metal
* 2.5 Rap metal
* 2.6 Symphonic metal
* 2.7 Viking metal

That's quite an insane amount of sub genres and quite frankly some of them are so bizarre its almost impossible to tell different apart.

For example for the life of me I cannot tell the difference between Death Metal, Brutal Death Metal, Gridcore, Deathgrind and Deathcore. 5 different Genres that to me sound the same. I'll admit to being a layman, I used to love allot of Metal bands (and still do listen to some) but Extreme metal never really appealed to me. As a result that's an outsiders perspective.

I can see that some extreme bands are different. For example Later period Death (Symbolic onwards, I never really 'got' their earlier stuff, just sounded like generic DM to me), Opeth, Mastodon, Amon Amarth and In Flames are technically extreme metal bands but don't sound like most extreme metal bands I've heard. I can see why they may need to be classified outside of most Extreme Metal acts. But for life of me I can't tell why Napalm Death and Morbid Angel are 2 different types of band.

Also Black Metal to me is one genre, yet according to Wikipedia can be divided into Symphonic black metal, Viking black metal, Folk black metal, Ambient black metal, Black doom and Blackened death metal. I seriously don't get that at all. But then I just don't get Black Metal period.

It's not so much that I find it pretentious but I find that it fosters divisions that are unhelpful. I've never seen a community so divided as the metal scene. Go to any on-line Metal forum and its like a constant elitist slanging match. Anyone who likes 'Deathcore' being attacked by those who like 'Grindcore', when I really don't see what the point in such arguments are. Any bands that gains any kind of exposure outside of small circles, signs to a major label or becomes popular are branded as the worst form of scum. I've never seen a scene so determined to remain unsuccessful. The nature of posts are usually puerile and offensive even by Internet standards and it really doesn't help combat the stereotype of your average metal fan.

Well yeh I can see that may be a bit OTT, probably some of them were made up in order to create an argument.

But as far as sub-genres in general go, as long as it makes sense, if it will help me find what music I'm looking for in a record store, it's fine by me.

And remember a lot of genres are made up to aid describing music, without them the question "what kind of tune is it" is kind of hard to answer The words hard, fast, dark, slow, up tempo etc. don't say much whereas if someone can just say it's liquid or darkstep (drum and bass genres as an example) they will get more of an idea, granted they need prior knowledge of what they are...

..that's I suppose where it can look a bit pretentious, but it's not intended. It's not supposed to be some ploy to cut mainstream listeners out in the sense of making it less followable to the common listener, although some muppets will always try and tell you that.

I had a total Punkgasm on Saturday. Went to our local once-a-month Rock Night, where my mate Simon 'Si of the Tiger/Psyco Smiles' Miles was doing the DJing. He likes his Punk as much as I do, and our faith was rewarded when a former member of The Damned showed up, along with the current line up of The Anti-nowhere League, UNT.....UNT! an original member of the The Anti-Nowhere League! Thoroughly decent blokes I must say.

But I'm getting into my Folk nowadays. I highly reccomend The Humblebums, who were Billy Connoly and Gerry Rafferty. Did you know 'Stuck In The Middle' was written about his Folk days with Billy?
