G'day!

After enjoying my first conversion efforts, I thought I would try for some more DP's - this time, the cheesy Dual Slaaneshi DP's with wings.

I originally planned to put Grifffon Wings on these models (games workshop pictures):

However they are so slender, its going to be impossible to do, so Im working on another idea...

I also intend to replace their hands with massive claws, much in the vein of the Daemonettes - (this is a half finished paintjob, used for demonstration purposes).

In any case, Im in the planning stage now, so If you have a good idea, comments, criticisms etc, I'd love to hear it!

Cheers

You just need a smaller set of wings, like these:

You could also try Pegaus wings. They look a little small for a Daemon princess to me though.

Thanks Sersi - what wings are those?

Ok, well I figured if this is a WIP, there better be some W and some P. So Ive posted my drawing plan for the Daemoness.

Of course she will need a tail, and maybe something done with the feet, but hey, one step at at time.

Im going to start cutting and gluing now, maybe I will have something actually to post here soon!

After all that, I decided to go with this instead.

Ok - because my DP was 'delayed', I thought I might just post all my updates to a single thread.

This is the minor work done on my DP - first stages of the talons.

A Plague Marine Aspiring Champion I've tried to convert using a fist from an Ogre model.

My recent painting of a single plague marine.

And my Zerkers, using a different method of painting red using the brown washes to get decent shading...

More evidence of my 40k related ADD, here is my first attempt at Alpha Legion Scales - I thought the painted on version looked a little simplistic, so I gave greenstuff a go.

Note - I am still learning, and it shows in close up pics like this. Im reasonably confident that these early ones will be fine from the distance of the table top!

G'day, its late at night, and I should be sleeping. However, I have done the base paint job of my First Alpha Legion Chosen (these are the pleb chosen, no special weapons, just normal dudes). Apologies for the photos, batteries low and I needed to take the photos in a hurry. Anyway, the paint job is half done, just to check how the colours work. Basecoat of 1:1 modian blue & orkhide green. medium drybrush with boltgun, then a hefty Blue Wash. Light drybrush with mitheral silver, then another wash with thakkra green. trim picked out with boltgun (this will be washed with badab black, then highlighted with mitheral silver, but I havent done that stage yet.).

Comments & criticisms are welcome (but please remember, this is WIP!). Personally, close up I think the scales could be better, but from table top distance, Im really happy with the look.

There are more pics in my gallery, but I dont need to bore you with them here.

Cheers

Your Plague Marines are very neat. I love the gs you've done on them. And you've painted that bezerker to quite a good standard. Now, if you don't do any more soon I will have to hunt you down and steal it all.

Scales are looking good.

I don't know whether it's the camera, but your scales don't stand out enough on the painted guy...

I think you should try and highlight them a bit more... On the third pic (back view/right shoulder) they seem more than ok, but on the furhter pics they don't really stand out...

Anyway, you did a good job with GS on them... They actually look like REAL scales huh!!!

Thanks for the comments guys! I agree the scales dont really pop out, I kinda thought these guys are sneaky infiltrators, so the subdued texture kinda worked for me. (actually one of the reasons I didnt want to paint on the scales - those GW alphas look nice and all, but dont look sneaky).

I might see what happens if I do another mitheral silver drybrush/thakkra green wash.

The alpha marine looks great and the scale effect is neat-o, it does remind me of skin peeling for some reason..

Hmm the Power fist on the nurgle champ shows some surprising similarity to one of my models.

It's all good I am glad people are using some of my ideas. Your army looks great so far!

P.S. I think putting some cables running from the PF to the back pack makes the whole thing more believable.

I would have never thought about adding actual scales to Alpha Legion miniatures. Pretty clever. Brilliant even...

Thanks - I started trying to get the scales neat and smooth, then figured, hey, its chaos, I think i would prefer more of a rough, aligator skin/dragonscale effect. Peeling skin is cool to tho!

No shame, I thought the same thing, and seriously considered a new level of highlighting. I think i shall keep them subdued tho!

Thanks for the comments, and compliments - I knew I had seen the Ogrefist/PF on a small model before, but couldnt remember where! If its your idea, full credit, I think it looks great.

Plus, love the Lighting Claws on your Khorne Lord. Seriously cool.

Lol - hardly brilliant, but Im glad you like the idea.

On my chosen squad, I have almost 'scaled' 5 basic guys, after which I should have my dark angels veterans, Alpha shoulder pads, 5 melta guns and Forgeworld rhino doors for a complete squad.

Looking forward to it!

Sorry, not much of an update today - just four more models + scales, and a trial of a new technique Im trying with painting - Im attempting 'feathering' to get more control over highlighting and to improve my work on robes.

Pics following:

Ive also received my Alpha legion shoulderpads and my metal melta gus, and picked up some Dark Angel Veterans, so my chosen are now on their way to getting their special weapons!

G'day - I got a question asking about the scales on my chosen.
Very basically:
- get your model, give it a nice clean so there is no dust on it. Greenstuff will stick easier.
- make a tiny amount of greenstuff. The amount I mix is seriously not much bigger than two match heads. You need this stuff to be pretty sticky so you dont need to glue them on the models. Greenstuff starts curing quickly (but takes ages to do so completely), and gets less sticky as time goes on. If you make a larger amount, I find you waste up to half.
- take a tiny portion of this (seriously, not much at all) and roll it into a ball. then stick the ball on the model, and gently flatten it with a sculpting tool (keep the tool moist as greenstuff sticks to metal better than plastic in my experience). You should get a disc that follows the models surface.
- Take the blade edge of the Greenstuff Tool, and slightly flatten the sides of the disk, so you end up with a rough 5-6 side polyhedron with rounded corners.
- strictly speaking, thats all thats necessary - you then repeat this process over and over, making sure you leave a gap between the scales so you can see them.

I also added a further step, to give the scales texture. i take the blade of the sculpting tool and make 3-4 very fine straight lines or cuts on each scale. This is just to give a bit of texture to each scale.

I sent this as a PM, but I figure I may as well add it to this blog!

Cheers guys - feedback from this blog keeps me actually doing stuff! I have two new models greenstuffed using the Dark Angel bodies, one with a melta, one with a powerfist plasma gun. I will try to take-upload photos on the weekend.

Both are on my new 'rubble' bases from back-to-base-ix. Ive found them very cool, but I was trying to pin some legs to one and managed to break my pin vise!

Alpha Legion Aspiring Champion with PP and PF.
