I dont get it, is there some underlying joke?

This just seems like a rather dull little txt based adventure game to me.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

I managed to actually beat the damn game as a Farmer (apparently 3x points) with everyone alive by the end of the trip (Took the River at the end and made it down with no crashes for the first time ever). I think I ended with something like 2450pts or so. I felt like a champ (Meager rations are where it's at).

On a side note:

Odell Lake is nowhere near as fun as I remember it being ~ 16-17 years ago.

I'm actually 30 but I've never owned an Apple.

So the idea behind the game is just to make it in one piece?

It was also mildy educational, especially if you talk to people a lot. I remember playing it in school.

In life AND in video games!

@LuciusAR:

Basically, yes, the premise is to make it to the Oregon Valley in tact. What makes this difficult is that it's incredibly frustrating to keep your party in good health, people seem to constantly get diseases and other injuries arbitrarily and your end score is based on a variety of factors such as 'How Many People survived', 'How Much Cash Do you Have Left', 'How much supply stuffs Do You Still Have', 'Health of Party', 'Time taken to arrive', etc. Granted, most of the time, all people cared about was hunting.

The game was, for all intents and purposes, supposed to be edu-tainment. If you stop at every location and look around and talk to people (as Mattlov mentioned), you were supposed to learn a bit about the trials of pioneers in the 1800's moving on west through the aptly named Oregon Trail. Considering this game was made around the mid-late 1980's and its mild educational value, it tended to be one of the few games that schools would/could let students play on their Apple IIe computers/computer labs (I don't recall there being PC labs until at least the mid 90's). That being said, playing it now, the game is really crappy, for many very obvious reasons. However, its main draw now is its nostalgic value, and the fact that even now, it's really frickin' hard to get through it successfully with a very high score.

It's amazing how I'm willing to put off playing new games like HL2, et al, and spend a couple of hours trying to get a higher score on this silly blast from the past.

This must be a generational thing, as I remember playing the game in the lab when in elementary school/junior high and being quite fond of it. My favorite part was the river rafting thing toward the end of the trail. There was another game I played around that time which involved using a pac-man like avatar to gobble up numbers that were the correct answer to a mathematical expression. I think it was called number cruncher or something like that.

Number Munchers! YES! I used to play that game in school all the time! I can't believe I forgot about it! There was also Word Munchers, which was also cool.

I really enjoyed Mario Teaches Typing too, although I didn't actually learn to type decently until I played Rafiki Teaches Typing.

I learned touch typing from Paws the cat.

Oregon Trail was solid, but Carmen Sandiago was where it was at (albeit a few years later).

It was always Oregon Trail and the number game for me. Did any of the rest of you play around with a drawing program that had a rudimentary programming language with which you could make little games? I believe it was called logowriter or something like that.

Logowriter is awesome. Incidentally, (the board game) Robo Rally is exactly the same thing, but with lasers. The only people I know who are good at Robo Rally recognize this fact immediately.
