I would like to take this opporchancity to thank the Government of the UK, the official opposition, and indeed any and all serious UK Political Parties.
You've finally done it. I no longer see any point whatsoever in partaking of the political system.
I have written you letters, which have either been replied to by some underling, or personally but entirely missing the point. For many years, not one of you has bothered to campaign in a proper manner. You have allowed yourselves to be reduced to a bunch of mewling, spoilt little brats criticising each others standpoints and policies, without ever managing to mention how you would improve the thing in question.
You are so keen to rubbish the other parties, you have entirely ceased promoting your own.
And probably worst of all, you have allowed the Media to become a political force in it's own right. This is clearly incredibly dangerous. The Daily Mail for example, is unashamedly right wing, print outright lies, instilling paranoia, and dragging the general populace down by concentrating on such largely unimportant subjects as immigration. The Daily Telegraph is leaked papers about to be made public, but in an uncensored medium. Sure, these were your expenses, but I worry about any sort of integrity in your underlings.
So in short, I am now opting out. From this day on, I will of course register to vote, but I will spoil my paper. I will write the leaders letters at least once a year berating the sorry state of our Government, currently the worlds oldest democracy. This state of affairs will continue until you self righteous, power hungry spankers listen to the common man once again. You are here to serve us. NOT the other way around. I demand utter transparency when it comes to issues which will affect my life, and indeed, all political issues.
I have had enough. I am barely staving off absolute apathy, and that is only because I am a stubborn sod, and I suspect mass voter apathy is exactly what a politician craves.
Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?

Can't do that. I might win, then I'd become the enemy.
Just once, I would like the Parties to actively canvass MY vote. There is absolutely nothing for me in any of their policies. I'm a white, working/middle class male, in the late 20's/knocking early 30's.
I don't give a rats arse about families, or some daft, outdated notion of what you might call family values. It is not the breakdown of home life that causes crime, it's crushing poverty, a poverty caused by the Government. It really comes to something that you can make more money with slightly dodgy benefits claims than you can busting a nut in a minimum wage job.
And lefty liberal as I may be, I believe in entirely selfish voting. I demand to know whats in it for me. Screw everyone else quite frankly. My vote cannot be bought, sold, cajoled or teased out of me. It has to be earnt.
I don't care about the past. The past is dead and buried. We all make mistakes, what counts is what we learn from them. Prove to me that lessons have indeed been learnt, and how you intend to turn things around. I am not going to tell you what it is I want. You are a politician. You should KNOW what it is I want, or at least be able to guess.
Do you even acknowledge that pretty much my entire generation is screwed for buying property? Do you even care that the largely unregulated 'property development' industry is creating gakky little shitholes, and cramming far too many rooms into old buildings, usually with extremely shoddy conversions all in the name of profit? I seriously hope you do, but my heart and mind say you do not.
You know what, sod it. I feel an extremely angry letter coming on. I do live in Tunbridge Wells, but I will not signing it 'disgusted of'. And I am going to demand the personal ministrations in the reply. Not some lackey or underling. I want you arseholes to see and get my outrage. I want a political syste that makes a difference to my life.
Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?
As Englands official representative I would like to thank you for your open letter. We in the opposition party thank you for your support and vow to you that we will not let labor continue to get away with the lose handling of our government. We are glad for your support in these dire times and wish for you the best.
Don't forget to vote for us in your local elections!

I'd say granting asylum to partakers in the Rwandan massacres (which there was controversy over back in 1999,2000 when I lived in the UK) and the creation of ethnic ghettos is pretty damned important.
I'm not anti immigration per se but it needs to be at a sustainable level and it needs to have immigrants who want to integrate and become productive members of society.
For example if I were to want to move to the Czech Republic to live, I'd damn well learn how to speak, read and write Czech as a priority, not be a n 80 year old who has lived in the country for 40 years and still know none of my adopted countries language, which happens all the time with patients at my hospital. :(

Who was it who decided that we are simply born to work, to gain material wealth, in order to pay taxes, to pay for roads, so that we can drive cars to work, and pay for petrol, that pays yet more taxes, so that more roads can be built, so that more companies can spring up to advise us what to do with our money, and so on and so on.

Your teachers parents and elders. But hey, a vote is only as good as its populace and an uninformed and apathetic populace creates an uninformed and ineffectual government. Good job on all that.

Go live in the woods, fight a bear, take down some deer with your hand crafted bow. Then come back and talk... You're kind of dumb. Civilization springs from the fact that natural law sucks a lot and no one likes to live that way. I'm sure it's nice to feel like getting back to nature is better from your ivory tower, but the simple fact that you can even express your opinion on the internet on a forum dedicated to a luxury game means that you have no idea what its like to do so.

Quite so.
Expenses. Everyone fiddles them. Thats just what happens when you offer certain things.
For example, do you really imagine that the owners of the papers who are kicking up such a stink about the expenses don't have their own expenses account, and I'm willing to bet good money the shifty buggers also have a very, uh, creative, accountants to make sure they don't pay a penny more in Tax than they absolutely have to.
There are far more important things to focus our government on.
Seriously going to write that letter. They are obliged to reply by law, so I shall let you guys know how I get on.

You've finally done it. I no longer see any point whatsoever in partaking of the political system.
No. Bad. I'm not offering an alternative, but from where I see it, the sane opting out of voting leaves the insane to vote. Do I hear 'BNP'?

I agree completely with you on this.
You are so keen to rubbish the other parties, you have entirely ceased promoting your own.
As said before, on this same point, I totally agree with you. That's why I can't see a fething point in ever, ever voting the 'Third Party' -- Lib Dems for us. It's a waste of a vote for a bunch of unvisionary, self-absorbed-but-totally-contrived arseholes who can posture and shout as much as they like, but it's never going to change a damn thing. They take what they think is popular for the amalgamation of political parties, transforming these unrelated smidgins of uselessness into something that they would like us to see as a manifesto.
Have you ever heard someone say - "What is more deadly than anthrax, is more unstable than a Somalian Cruise Ship, and is more dangerous than a Nuclear Warhead? An old woman reading the Daily Mail." I think you should get it - they read what they see and spread it. It's not true, but who are they to doubt what is given to them, fresh and warm, on their parquet doorstep?
The Daily Telegraph is leaked papers about to be made public, but in an uncensored medium. Sure, these were your expenses, but I worry about any sort of integrity in your underlings.

The Political system in this country is rotten. Every MP has an excuse, a ploy, and a sheer lack of common sense and forward-thinking ethics that should come as standard in anybody trying to change a country for the better. And I mean in any party, of any political leaning.
Thanks MDG, you said it in words I could not have done better for this bit.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.
Of course they don't care it doesn't affect them. They have no clue at all what it's like to live in the real world. They tell us but we need a second home so we can live in our constituency - hmm I always thought that is why we had a public transport system. You know the one that like everything else you've had your grubby fingers in it went tits up. Surely you know how to catch a train or a bus. We can show you if you like.
Be a politician where even if your a greedy, lying, corrupt, bungling imbecile you can still keep your job and earn more money in a year than most people will earn in a lifetime and even when it is proven that you are a greedy, lying, corrupt, bungling imbecile you can still keep your job or we'll just give another job that you can screw up. Look at Peter Mandleson - how many times does he keep coming back?
The fact is while the 3 main parties are around nothing will ever change and they will continue to screw over the general public. Unfortunately it seems that the only parties that are winning any significant votes are the fascists. It seems that they are saying what people want to hear - their target votes are the angry 20 year olds who have no job and see people from other countries taking these jobs and Daily Mail readers and there are a lot of angry 20 year olds around. And while the government continues to make a mess of things and try to deny wrong doings and make excuses and doing all the things you have mentioned instead of doing their jobs this number is only going to grow. I believe historical precedence will back me up on this one.
Currently none of the parties represent me and I agree that my vote should mean something to them, they should give enough of a damn that they get off their arses and canvass my vote, see what my opinion is. Not expect that I will give it to them because they have insulted another party.
Do you even acknowledge that pretty much my entire generation is screwed for buying property? Do you even care that the largely unregulated 'property development' industry is creating gakky little shitholes, and cramming far too many rooms into old buildings, usually with extremely shoddy conversions all in the name of profit? To be fair the media must take their share of the blame for this. The insane obsession that the right wing tabloids have with housing prices is just mind boggling. Even In the depths of recession house prices are still hugely inflated, with the average house price being far out of reach of the average salary earner. How is that even logical? I don't know if I'm being naive but surely given that mortgages are based on 3 x annual income the average house price in any given area should be around 3 x the price of the average salary in that area. Yet this time last year the average house price was around 8 x my salary and I earn more than the national average. Now its dropped to about 6 x my salary, which is still over inflated and the tabloids talk about it like the end of the world! When they've dropped by another 40% or so we might have actually reaches some level of normallity.
The middle class obsession with making homes as expensive (and therefore out of reach of the 'undesirables') as possible needs to stop and stop now. Houses need to a place to live, not an investment. Whilst this mindset pervades housing will be a privilege of the rich. Anyway rant over you can get this back on topic now.
"And if we've learnt anything over the past 1000 mile retreat it's that Russian agriculture is in dire need of mechanisation!"
Yay! A thread aboout politics! (not really sarcasm)
I know how you feel MDG. Well, not exactly, because at this point I don't have to care about my financial situation.
But I am also very dissapointed in the whole system right now. We have a lot of political parties in Germany, but only 5 of them are actually part of the government. The thing is, after the last elections (4 years ago ) the two biggest parties decided to join together to form what is known as the "große Koalition" and the other 3 parties in the Bundestag are the opposition. But the green party, left party and the liberals are not really enough to actually be a strong oppositional force which is why the law for website blocking I already talked about got through and the online petition against it with over 130000 voters didn't do squat.
At this point, the two major parties better get their gak together before campaining again for the october elections or the whole system could get turned upside down.

I'm serious Scout.
I can see why you're so angry about this, but you have to see it this way. You're not only voting for the candidate/party you like, but also against his opponent(s).
I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes you just have to choose the smaller of two evils.

Exactly my philosophy. It's worse in the U.S. where we have 2 parties that rule everything and they're both terrible. Your only choice is slightly right of the center or slightly left of the center. I end up disliking one candidate more than the other, and that's how I decide who to vote for. The parliamentary system seems better to me. Partially because I just wish I could vote for Sweden's Pirate Party. Anyway, it's slightly better to vote for the person you prefer in my humble opinion. At least if more people agree, change could come (defeated sigh)... eventually?
I liked Keyasa's post for some reason. I don't know, I'm a fan of anarchy, I just wish it could happen. Made me think of "(Nothing But) Flowers" by the Talking Heads.

It wasn’t so long ago that most people could create fire for themselves using nothing but simple tools, and know how to skin an animal to make clothing, or look at the land and know what can be eaten without poisoning themselves. We, as a people, have become so lazy and pampered by our “progressive” society that everything we could ever desire is at our fingertips. We have more “slaves” at our disposal than many kings of ancient times. We can even order supermarket food delivered direct to our doors now, no need to go out in the real world!
The gene pool is polluted with weakness, with so many parasites that would never have been given the chance of life only a thousand years ago. Why is this so? Because of one thing only; oil.
People think that expenses scandals with our ministers is important? It is quite honestly one of the least important things I have ever had the misfortune to hear about.
In fifty years time, no one will care. Possibly less time, if the growing evidence of Peak Oil reaches its almost certain conclusion. Left wing, right wing, labour, conservative, Obama, Iraq, Afghanistan, racism, passive smoking, drug cartels- none of these things will matter. Then, the only thing that will matter is 7 or 8 billion people trying to survive when the lights go out when less than 1% know how to do it.
But that’s a soapbox rant for another day And I love my soapbox.
"If our society had no social problems at all, the leftists would have to INVENT problems in order to provide themselves with an excuse for making a fuss."
It's not just a matter of knowing how to survive. That lifestyle is all well and good when there's only a few thousand people around, but it cannot sustain today's populations. Even if we were all expert woodsmen.
