For the same $30 or whatever it will cost in the US, I'd rather by from Fine Scale Modeling / Osprey.

I took a look at it at the Bunker today. Just like all the other How To Paint Citadel whatever books, not really anything in it for the really experienced painter. Some nice pics and all, but I don't see it being useful (IMO).

Be nice if it taught me how to do that fancy half dark angel logo they have on the rhino put-it-together guide.

Uh, yeah, because I really need help painting my tanks with completely flat armour.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Hmmm...

I guess I'd be somewhat tempted if they included the stencil for the Valkyrie wing Imperial Eagle. That would be kinda cool...

But I think my Valks are going to be camoflague with nose art. That would be better.

Wow, John- that's a great idea. Stencils for all sorts of wing/nose/hull art, and maybe some camo stencils too. Hmm. Maybe some craftworld, Sept etc. stencils for the other races. That would make a product that could sell on it's own, or enhance something like this.

Hope some independent does something like that, because it's unlikely that GW ever would.

Holy crap that was weird, this topic went in reverse order.

Usually it's news, positive responses, positive responses reach critical mass then negative responses, then derail.
Instead this was news, negative, critical mass, positive then derail.

I enjoy reading the How to Paint series, but the price is a little steep for a casual reference/bathroom reading type book. I'd get more mileage out of a Fantasy army book or something. Still, there usually is some decent material in those, if not exactly anything new to the internet generation.

Probably not a purchase, but will flick through it in the shop. Looks like it will be all 40K stuff, but do you reckon they'll have a section on Steam Tanks?

I'm getting fairly good at painting now, but will have a flick through it when I get the chance.

Is always nice to make sure you've got the basics right before trying the more advanced stuff. And having a few pointers on hand is definitely a good thing. Had a look at the Imperial Armour book on the same subject and I rather fear my brain melted at the sheer complexity of their stuff!

And on flat surfaces, I do need help. I can make muscle tone pretty decent looking (well, Orcy muscle tone. Got my technique down to a tee) but my flat surfaces always look, well, flat.

From the GW site:

"How To Paint Citadel Tanks

How to Paint Citadel Tanks provides a complete guide to assembling and painting all manner of vehicles of the 41st Millennium, using paints, glues and other materials from the Citadel range. Whatever your level of experience, you will find plenty of helpful tips and tricks within the pages of this book. How to Paint Citadel Tanks offers a wealth of advice for painters, collectors, and gamers alike.

This 96-page book covers every aspect of paining and modelling Citadel vehicles, including: essential tools and materials, preparation and assembly, and five complete stage-by-stage guides examining: a Space Marine Predator, an Imperial Guard Leman Russ, an Ork Trukk, a Chaos Space Marine Defiler and an Eldar Falcon."

Doesn't look like it. Evidently the Tau don't get much love either. I guess if it had a section on doing blending and NMM over large flat areas (such as tank armour) then that would be useful for steam tanks, but it looks like as usual they're not doing enough step by step guides.

If you ask me, they should write a book that has about 50 different miniatures, and how to paint each one to two or three different levels of quality.

No Tau tanks?! Whilst I'm sure all the techniques will be covered, you would have thought they'd have popped one in for the sake of completeness.

Regarding your last point, GW used to do a How to Paint Citadel Miniatures Book exactly like that. They took a handful of models from each race and showed a stage by stage guide for each one. They probably thought they were just repeating themselves, but I think people like a painting reference for the models that they're painting, rather than generic techniques that cover all bases. Kind of annoyed they stop doing painting guides in the army books, but I guess WD tends to cover it.

I had the same issue with their painting space marines book. The whole reason I didnt buy it was because they didnt show the steps to paint each major chapter, they just showed examples. I spent forever trying to figure out how to make the red they showed on all the weapons (Im not very bright when it comes to art)
