Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Rackham are grossly overpackaging again, better than some of their other boxsets but still way too big for the contents.

Shipping will end up as real problem. When will they learn?

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Hmmm, I am not sure I agree. The packaging fits the contents of the box, allowing them to remain intact (not broken) and painted (not chipped, etc.). How would you have packaged it differently? (serious question, I am curious as I think the packaging is alright, but am willing to be swayed on this topic)

yeah,
looks really good.
So what's the deal with prepainted, do most people use that as a base coat?

Panic...

Here is a nice up close and personal look at the 2 new Army Boxes for AT-43

http://www.figouz.net/AT-43/Army_Box.php

In order to keep production costs low, and to offer such a great deal, the paint quality of the miniatures has been reduced (basically, the last two steps were removed from the process). There is talk that pick-up-and-play gamers and painting gamers alike will enjoy the box sets. That is yet to be seen, but I think they are a hell of a deal.

Cheers!

P.S. I hope you read French.

To me the reduced painting quality and reduced price are a great result. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the final quality of R's plastic non-vehicles and resented paying the painting premium for a less-than-perfect job.

However removing that cost and only charging for "assembled and basecoated" models seems a much better deal. The models are still better looking than a "grey horde", yet for even an inexperienced painter a quick dip and maybe a drybrush will radically improve the figures beyond the level a machine was able to do, for a fraction of the price and for very little effort. With the preponderance of "dips" and "washes"now available in every hobby store, this seems eminently sensible. That final polishing off of the figures is the funnest part of painting anyhow, and I sure as heck won't be missing the assembly stage of plastic models, so I personally find it a win-win deal.

I'm definitely buying a Red Blok box, and am considering buying both as the postage saving really makes it a great deal for 2 boxes!

Looks good!

I might have missed it, but are there plans to do a UNA and Therian Box Set?

There are plans to do U.N.A., Therian, Karman, and ONI (the next army to be released). ETA on those is unknown, although ONI will get theirs first.

The packaging is quite good, any less and you would complain about broken minis because of shoddy packaging.

I don't know Duncan. I've got friends who just throw all their infantry minis in plastic bags and I haven't seen a broken or chipped one in the 3 months or so we've been playing. That may not work for vehicles or containers, but would form fitting styro be any less environmental friendly than the plastic now being used?

Well, there was quite some experimenting with packaging and the box packaging turned out quite well. Keep in mind that the boxes are shipped in sea containers and get thrown by parcel services.

Styro and plastic make not much of a difference.

There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Just to clarify, they weren't exactly decals. They are "painted" on using a computer that in essence stamps them on the the surface of the miniature (Tampography). Here is a snippet from Aftermath describing the Tampo process:

Aftermath wrote:A decal (a word which itself is derived from the french word "décalquer", which translates to "transfer") is an image printed onto a thin material such as paper or plastic or vinyl, which is then cut and adhered to the target surface with an adhesive. The only real differences between the peel-and-stick decals used on many toys and the water-transfer decals found in a multitude of model kits are the thickness of the substrate and the nature of the adhesive.

Tampo is a toy- and electronics-industry term that I learned about from both my brother (Toy designer for a major US toy company) and through my own work around the same time. It is short for Tampography, which is alternately known as "pad printing". The image to be applied to the surface of a three-dimensional object is printed onto a flexible rubber or silicone pad, which transfers the image to the irregular surface, with the paint directly on the surface.

Decal permanance depends greatly on the durability of the adhesive used, the ink used to print the image, and the material the image is printed onto. Tampography is as permanent as the paint used and the object it's printed onto.

This process can be costly, and is one of the things Rackham cut to bring the Army Boxes out as such a low cost.

Hey, Cogs! Thats the first time I've seen something other than concept are for them. Nice box layout though. I wish we had some players here so I could justify getting a Red Blok Box.

Having spent 12 years in Golf Ball R&D, I can also say that's how a lot of golf balls get their logos applied to them as well!

You know, I would buy tons of these if they were still raw on sprues, unamsembled and unpainted like abby prime, there is so much convo potential in there... It would also be cheaper to make boxes for it... I think they would sell a lot more that way. As is its a hassle to cut everything and try to bring the detail covered with paint back ( more on creatures than machines).
