When I first got into the hobby, I didn't really have an "Army" of sorts. It was a loose collection of Ork Mini's that my gaming club allowed me to use back in the day.

Now, after playing a great 750 pickup game with my friend's models, I've decided I owe 40k as much attention and WHFB.

So, I'm polling between these 3 armies: Eldar, Tau, or Chaos Marines

P.S. I'll let the Poll settle for 1 more day (To end on the 26th)

Also, I'm not really "New" to the game, I have 1,000 Black Legion and Orks, But both of these armies were given to me by friends (And look a tad atrocious) and I've wanted to start an army of my own.

Note: The Eldar have actually won out.

I'm a fan of the Tau army and feel it does not have enough players, so I voted that you should play them.

Have fun with whatever you choose though

I do like the Tau army, especially since they focus on massed firepower.

Plus, they look pretty kick-ass.

I would, were they available in-store.

I'm buying my mini's from a brick and mortar with 20% off, and they unfortunately don't carry DE.

Plus, I play Dark Elves, the whole "Torture 'em" thing is getting pretty boring, IMHO.

It'd go Tau or Eldar. Pick which ever you think has better looking models.

+1 to Mars.Techpriest's post.

Until Chaos gets a new codex that doesn't generate collective moans, I'll probably just play my Imperial Fists.

Either way, there aren't enough Tau players.

Dont play Eldar (they's tricksy!)! And really, greater good? Sounds like a Tom Cruise kinda cult to me. Chaos! BURN!!!

Why you ask? Hands down best troops in the game, for a game thats all about troops.

Yes, Im both biased, and condemed to torture in the eye of terror for eternity, but that doesnt make what I say less true!

I disagree about "hands down" best troops. CSM have solid troops, but no one is folding to them - not even close. There are many other troops choices in various armies that complete in both power and point cost efficiency.

Biased reply was biased.

I like the Eldar stuff a lot better than WHF elves (I've played HE) plus they are simply the coolest looking, IMO. I say that as a sometime Tau player with no Eldar models.

I don't know why, but Eldars and Tau are often the big dude. "Should I buy those Eldars or those Tau?"

Thery're similar at the first look, but they're soooo diferent... With Eldars, so have the best "Anti-ALL" and "All-comer" lists (In my little and humble opinion ) but with Tau you've got an ENORMOUS fire power. What does this mean? You don't need to be as all-comer as Eldars, a lot of your units can defeat a good variety of enemies.

(Sorry for the errors, i'm spanish )

Tau and Eldar are excellent armies, but more often than not they tend to be more difficult to play. For someone just getting into the game I would suggest CSM.

Don't go Eldar. They have lots of neat units, but only one transport. It's nigh impossible to create a truly competitive army without going mech, and mech eldar is boring and repetitive.

I'd say Tau. Complex enough to be interesting, not so complex as to be frustrating to someone (relatively) new to the game.

I'm not exactly new either. I know the rules and such, but I've just never really had an army.

Well, it looks like a tie so far.

Well, so far.

It's looking either like either Tau or Chaos, Eldar with only 14 (I asked a Friend)

Tau have some of the best heavy weapons in the game (railguns at str 10 ap 1 72" range) and some great mobility to boot.

Chaos have a great unit lineup with lots of varied and strong units

Eldar... tricky to use, but deadly in the right hands (each unit has a dedicated job)

Personaly... i would pick Tau. As a ex-Tau player ;p

Of course if the imperial guard were there..... ^_^

I am dissapointed in you. Where are the Emperors servants?

As it is i would have to say eldar. Just becuase CSM are just MEAN and Tau are WAY too lovey-dovey...

FYI: Thanks for not listing SM as an option!
Eldar or CSM are more dynamic imo. You can make a shooty or CC army for either...gl making a good Tau CC army. Depends if you want a 'good' or 'bad' army.

Well if the appearance is even for you then choose based on playing style.

Tau is the most one dimensional, shoot, shoot and shoot some more and pray the dont get you into assualt. But if your a shooty player, they are your pick

Eldar is fast and very well balanced between shooty and assualty but with very weak troops.

Chaos has some of the best assualt units in the game, solid shooting, and can be very resilient.

another thing to consider is cost. you can build a VERY good chaos army for much less money than a good eldar or tau army due to a much lower count of both vehicles and infantry models.

Chaos is also much easier to paint in my opinion.

I vote eldar.

From an aesthetic point of view they are the most simple to get a basic paintjob on, yet they have lots of areas that a skilled painter can really show off with.

From a gamer point of view they have the strongest army (IMO) I play Space Wolves and I regularly demolish Tau and CSM, but Eldar give me problems every time.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

I would not say that the Tau are all lovey-dovey. They mean to expand the "greater good" to all the galaxy

whether those they spread it to like it or not. Those who stand in the way of the "greater good" are brushed aside

with extreme prejudice. They are really a bunch of cosmic socialists who want to tell you that their way of life is

better then yours. I should buy an etherial and give him a Barak Obama head conversion.

At least the armies of chaos wear their motivations on their sleeves. Anyway, Tau are a lot of fun to play.

Get six broadsides and have fun!

The reason I don't list SM is because:

A: Half my FLGS plays them (I'm serious. Out of the 8 of us, 4 play SM as their main army)

B: Guard are Bandwagonish, and My buddy plays guard.

C: Inquisition, whilst fun, is WAAAY too expensive for me right now.

P.S. It's looking like Eldar for me.

For those who didn't know, I'll be blogging this entire army from stage 1 onwards.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Eldar have been kicked-out of the thread, due to the lack of Eldar Models at the Store.

Eldar.

Good looking models that can survive a basic paintjob and really shine with a good one. Onto gameplay: Combined arms list, basically eldar have mobility at there core but onto that you can strap shooty or you can strap on close combat and you can shift along easy to match current meta game.

I really think it is such a nicely designed army list just for the fact that as codex creep and FOTM emerges you can normally tweak to counter. (also you have some pure beardy power combos should you decide to use them )

Edit: WELP - eldar got kicked out, go CSM because the emperor is a bitch.
