What's funny is they missed the big one: Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. Clinton signed it as a lame-duck.

Signed in to law with the help of hes Republican congress, while every watch-dog and expert did nothing. Clinton is to blame as much the rest of the country who went along with it. Bubble and bust has been going on for years. Greed caused this mess.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Economics is a tidal force, those who understand this truth use the tide to their advantage, and the best means of doing this is the most immoral, to encourage others to move against the ide or set sil at the wrong time, then reap their assets when they fail when the tide turns.

Now is the real time for the real entrpreneurs to make real money, the boom is for the herd.

Debt and credit, boom and bust. These are the economic cycles.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

If you have a steady job (i.e. in health or the public service or emergency services) and aren't buying shares since the market tanked, you are insane.

We took a hit on our share portfolio to the tune of 30%, but thanks to the drop in the cost of buying shares we have already caught back up and passed where we would have been if the market has kept at the height it was.

And as we never sell shares, just enjoy the fully franked dividends each year we don't actually lose any money when the market goes down, sure our paper volume drops but we aren't in it for the value, just the dividends.

QFT.

Now I just need a job that doesn't deal in luxuries.

This may be an historic buying opportunity. We don't know if stocks will get this cheap again in our lifetime.

However, people should remember that sometimes stocks are cheap for valid reasons. Let the buyer beware.

Actually, given that we paid for everything, we taxpayers should be getting shares in New GM and New Chrysler, not just the dividends.

Or they may be much cheaper in five months.

You can go back to the early 80s and probably before that to see bi-partisan support for de-regulation and encouraging lending and borrowing. This was embraced by both sides, and picking out the policies enacted under one president while ignoring the Republican control of the congress, and ignoring the policies introduced under other presidents... well that's what puts the 'crazy' into 'crazy wing radio talk show host'.

And you also have to remember, shock and surprise, that this isn't just an American issue. Many countries formed similar policies, and now have financial systems in similar problems, in some cases they're in even worse shape. This doesn't just go beyond Democrats and Republicans, it goes beyond US politics.

Sort of. There will always be booms and busts in the economy. But some swings of the cycle can be moderated or even removed with decent policy. The policies in this case did the exact opposite, increasing the bubble and thereby worsening the bust.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
