Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman
|
Hi There.
Recentlly I looked in the 5th edition book and i looked at the mordant 22nd troops and all of the men looked like they were veterns, I thought I could make something like that to. Anyways I recently purchased a cadian command squad (almost forgot this is new sets) Cadian troops, Catachan command squad a heavy weopons team and a really big collection of bits for conversions and I wanted to make a part of my army that look like they're very expierenced . So I came here for advice on conversions or parts that would be best for these particular conversion, I also forgot I may be purchasing forgeworld veteren upgrade and want to make my troops look cool. Thanks

The FW veteran upgrades are pretty much your best bet.
Veterans, in the case of the Guard, tend to accumulate more gear from the field of battle, stuff like trophy weapons etc.
Or alternatively, you can show them as vets by giving them camo versus flat uniforms for the standard grunts.

Just don't type "vets" into Google, unless you have a force of militant animal doctors

My approach to Veterans is to use models from a different regiment, such as Moridan Iron Guard or Tallarn Desert Raiders depending on your battlefield theme.
So for an Ice World, I would use normal Cadians for the bulk of my force and then Valhallan Ice Warriors as Veterans representing the indigenous population who are naturally more experienced at fighting on their home turf.
Not a single conversion required

U' mm I would agree with FW I just ordered 2 of them 3 day's ago They look very good. But also Space Marine Scouts make excellent conversions if you are the type who will like to save money or make a cheap effective conversion rather then buying it from FW then I would go for SM Sniper or regular scouts one box would be more then enough. Because it comes with 5 shot gun's, 5 bolter's & 5 chain sword's. Not only that but with some simple conversion you can use the scouts torso for carapace armor they fit an also the guns will not fit on IG infantry without conversion. It's up to you I would go with FW though there really cool.

I think that the forge world is probably my best choice . Last night I made 2 soldiers and i haven't got the pictures up but I think there cool. And how much is the forge world veteren upgrade pack costs, anyways if you have more advice on making the veterens look good without forge world stuff or with forge world stufff I will be happy to take your advice

Veteran troops accumulate a lot of extra kit, so load up on the accessories. The basic cadian and catachan kits have loads of junk in them perfect for that, and the necromunda range has a few accessory and weapon sprues with autoguns, variant lasguns, shotguns, pistols, and the like. There's also a sprue with a bunch of large knives and swords.
If you have a dedicated transport for them, load it up with extra bundles of stuff.
Also, the cadians and catachans are multi-part kits, and veterans are hardly likely to stick to uniform regs, so switch parts up. Removing helmets is popular.
If you feel up to it, try greenstuff.

I would consider what purpose your vets will serve. If my vets will have carapace armor, I would use scout bodies with Cadian helmets and arms. If they have camo cloaks, I would use standard cadians with greenstuff cloaks or other capes. For demo teams, assault marine melta bombs are a great way to go.

Try giving your veterans a rag-tag look. Think of them as being in the battlefield for a long time, so they've got some scavenged weapons and equipment. Also, having mixed armor in the unit (which can be done easily by mixing the Catachan and Caidan command boxes) should help give that appearance.

$27 for the Infantry upgrade kit or the Rebreather kit(both include the same amount of stuff, just the heads from the rebreather kit account for a bit of space, even though you get the same amount of grenades and other accessories...and are much, much cooler )

try this (my pal wants to do this) Your guys are cadian right? is so then mix and match cadian parts with catachan like cadians with muscles but try to keep is so the guys still look like if they are wearing cadian armor then greenstuff extra armor on them
example larger shoulder pads, a full helmet with visors ect then give them trophies. Id love to see its finshed product if done like this

I plan to give my Veterans the rebreathers that you get in the Command squad box set.
Alternatively, I do like the camo-scheme idea above, and I'm also considering making them stand out by having every model named (I paint the names onto the bases for my Guard)

I did that for my Wolf Guard - it really helps give a unit some personality.
