The other day I was in a fairly even sided match my Witch Hunters Vs his Guard. Ussualy this guy is greatb to play with (best playa I vs yet) although I think he can sometimes be TFG.
Now after 3-4 turns footslogging through his hail of fire I was ready to charge. I declared I was going to charge my inquisitor at one of his squads and my canoness and Junior officer (inducted) at another. Junior officer failed to reach through cover, my canoness did though but (in my excitement) I resolved the combat between her and that sqaud (tie) but had forgotten to move my inquisitor into comabt. He then refused to let me move my inquisitor and resolve the combat with the squad (not the one I charged with canoness.)
This left my inquistor facing a 10-man squad of vets with meltas and lascannon. We didn't have time to finish though.
I just have to ask, Is it fair play to refuse to let your opponent charge when he has declared his assualt (I did, very cleary, and he acknowledged) but has forgetten to ACTUALLY move them into base contact. I was very frustrated and (though we kept it civil) I couldn't help but think that he was being TFG.

If you don't follow the rules, don't be annoyed if someone calls you on them
You broke the rules by not moving them when you were meant to.

I know. But still, it WAS a pretty desperate tact to try in a friendly game. I HAD declared the assualt. He knew that. It is just that I got cuaght up in the excitmet.
In the stricest, rule-abiding sense...you are right. But do you think that this desperate call was necesssary? It certainly killed the fun.

Didn't kill the fun for him.

whether it was neccessary or not is not a question for a Rules Debate Board. At "You make the Call" we argue about Rules as Written. Rules as Intended and "Fun Factor" arenot important.

oh...well.
I just have to ask was his reaction reasonable? Would you do the same in his stead. Was he being TFG?
@Gwar: I don't think he was enjoying it either.
(You may like to hear that he proceeded to miss with his meltas and charged me, I then beat him and made him flee off the table. Is that Karma?)

His actions are in personal opinion reasonable. A forgiving nature creates sloppy play that detracts from the slight tactical nature of the game.

I think his reaction is reasonable. If you missed moving models into combat, and wanted to bring them in after the rest of the combat had ALL been resolved...that's really cheating. Saves have been allocated and made, and if I'm playing something with wound allocation magic, things might have gone a lot different had you had more attacks. You're essentially getting two rounds of assault if you do that, which I don't think is really fair.
Sorry, I think your friend had the right of it, although karma seems to have settled it.

@dashofpepper: But it was on the other side of the battlefield, the two combats weren't connected in any way.

Doesn't matter.
But at least you won't be making the mistake again. And that is how people learn best.

Yeah, I know.
Certainly won't be doing that again. It was a pretty fun game until that moment. (He beileves he won, but the forces were fairly balanced by turn 4, when he had to pack up).
Anyway, I would have allowed him to do it to me (does that make me an easy going person or dumb?)
It was a shock that someone could be THAT precise in a friendly game. I've certainly learned my lesson.

actually in friendly games my entire club is that precise.
Infact I remember as a kid when lord of the rings was just released, reading a battle report in White Dwarf, were opponent A forgot to move his models onto an objective on the last turn, and should of lost the game but Opponent B allowed him to move the models up to the objective in his turn and therefore lost the game.
Even then I couldn't help but feel that it was an idiot move to allow him to do so, if people forget they won't learn unless they pay the consequences.

So does this make your games "enjoyable"?
I entirely see your point, and it is probably the best way to learn, (I remember that report actually, It was an easterling no?) but if the guys in white dwarf are doing things differently, then mabye (honest here) you're missing something?
If you play that way, you'll get opponents, great opponents, and also great games. But not as much fun, or as many friends. I am only assuming this, you probably have a great time there, bur our club (not a store) is ussualy far more relaxed.

yes it was an easterling!
Also I play this way because it is how my Club has always played. Therefore their's no real animiosity between players as we all play the same way.
Also I am good friends with the majority of players in my club, as I mentioned in a different thread(possibly on a different site, I forget) I routinely have conversations with my opponents during games, I know the names of one regular's Son, I know the degree another Regular is currently taking as well as the unfortunate illness another is currently suffering from. You can play strictly and have fun, aslong as both players are aware of it before hand, which we are at my club.

@Gwar!: Winning does not always = Fun.
@combo: of course, and I don't begrugde that. Just as you shouldn't begrudge it that our club is FAR more relaxed. If someone (ussualy a new kid) screws up, we are ussualy far more lenient. I wasjust surprised by my friends attittude.

A conflict of ideology there I think. Personally I have the ideology that the challange of playing as the best I can be, and know my opponent is also playing the best he can be, and that neither of us is pulling any punches, is the exhilarating fun.
Maybe why I also do alot of competitive Water Sports, but Fun is in the competition, not in the game.
EDIT:@ Faithful thats were the problem comes in, problems will always arise when two players are playing on two different ideologies, but that doesn't make your opponents stance anyless valid than yours. This is something to discuss with your opponent, and reach an understanding that both of you are happy with. Alternatively it might be that the two of you are looking for two different things out of the game and need to find different people who are more intouch with each others gaming style.

I have done something like that before during set up i was able to hit side armor on a predator with my scouts and a missle. Got so focused on that that i forgot to move my whole army and fired the shot. The way i see it i have to learn from my mistakes. So didnt even ask my buddy if i could move my stuff either just did a face palm after i did it though, and went about the game

@combo: I know, that's you're way of playing. And if you're going to go all out that's fine. We have great friendly games here. We are not deviants and we have a luagh while playing.
If we ever have a game, just warn me alright! (lol)

I will allow new players the chance to correct oversights like the one in the OP, however there IS a limit (not a hard and fast one mind you). I will always say "please try to remember in the future". If it starts happening ALOT I will start reminding them about it. After a few more times i will simply tell my opponent "OK, but next time you forget, you have to live with it." Of course it WILL happen again (probably quite a few times) and I'll hold them to the rules, after which they'll start to learn from their mistakes. Granted this would all go a bit faster if I was adamant about it from the start, but I frequently play people who are still trying to learn the basics; I pick and choose which rules to be strict about depending on the experience of the player. It's easier for a lot of people to learn this game in small chunks rather than all at once.

It really is up to your opponent to let you, or not let you, go back and do an action that you'd forgotten about, after the time is past. You can certainly feel very happy if he lets you -- but unless you're very new, you can't really feel all that unhappy if he *DOESN'T* let you.
I was playing the (hugely fun) old GW game Gorkamorka with my 9-year-old son today. It was our 2nd ever game of it... he did let me move one of my Trukks even after I'd shot my Trak already, but he made it clear that was gonna be my last chance to screw up. I had to persuade him to even be that kind, though, and to remind him it was our 2nd ever game, and all...
