I found this particularly amusing:

One of its first deployments was a failed attempt to find a bullet in the body of the assassinated President James Garfield as he lay dying from a gunshot wound. Might have worked too if he had not been lying on an iron-framed bed.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

The tacos that Americans eat are about as Mexican as pizza, so I guess that evens out.

We do love you (US) just don't like to admit it too often.

Personally I LOVE the fact that your great president Obama has come to support us Brits sort out Helmand - not that we need help, we were doing fine but can't beat that extra ummmpphhh that the US brings.

Wait, wait. The U.S. began on March 4th, 1789 if I'm not mistaken under the current Constitution and arguably it began at the end of the civil war in its current state (more or less).

July 4th is the day we collectively decided to tell Britain to 'get bent'! (nothing personal).

So I prefer to think of today as the day to tell authority to go 'F' itself!

I remember a convo I had with an American compatriot once. It went something like this.

Him: So yeah, I'll be out celebrating tonight.
Me: Celebrating? It your birthday?
Him: Ha ha, very funny.
Me: ?
Him: You know what day it is.
Me: Erm.....no. Fraid not. Enlighten me.
Him: Stop trying to wind me up.
Me: Er...It's not 9/11, cause that was on the 9th of the 11th...the end of the civil war?
Him: Are you being serious?
Me: Errrrrr.........I can't think of anything else you guys celebrate. Or is St patricks day or something?
Him: Seriously dude, stop trying to piss me off.
Me: I am being serious.
Him: Seriously?
Me: Yes, seriously.
Him: Well, it's independence day of course!
Me:And you celebrate that?
Him: Of course!
Me: Sorry, but can you remind me? Do you mean the fight with the British, or the one where you fought each other?
Him: Dude, this is not funny. I'm starting to get peeved now.
Me: No, I'm being serious. My forte is European history and the World Wars, not American history.
Him:The one where we kicked you guys out!
Me: Ah.
Him: What do you mean, 'Ah'?!
Me: Nothing really.
Him: You can stop taking the frak now.
Me: I'm not!
Him: You gakking well are! You're pretending not to know just because you know it'll get under my skin!
Me: ..........
Him: Just because we kicked your sorry asses out of our country!
Me: Look. Let's just not even go there. I don't feel like arguing this evening.
Him: What is there to argue about! You guys got trumped good! So stop looking down your nose!
Me:I could go own about us being involved in several other wars at the same time, the French involvement, and so on. But you know what? Let's just not go there.

Needless to say, we broke off contact that night. It always baffled me how worked up he got over the fact that I knew nothing about american history. I was genuinely curious too, and had no intention of giving offence. Some people are just like that I guess.

The funny thing is no one here knows what Cinco de Mayo celebrates. We all celebrate it anyways though.

But we love you anyway, and you're fun to conquer other nations with.

Yikes! I thought we got Bush out of office! I didn't realize Jesus represented the U.S. That's Captain America's job.

...and Gutteridge, I've not been too proud to be an American over the last several years. You must understand, this country has some very split views and ideas over what direction we have been heading. Its not an easy fix.

I have been somewhat seriously eye-ing Vancouver as my next place of residence or possibly moving back to Europe. As it is, all of my family is here and we are in a holding pattern. Gotta make sure I can find a steady 40K group in Vancouver, Ireland or Northern Deutschland first.

So understand my statement about telling authority where to take it and shove it. That is the American pride.

It's not about having relatives who fought in the war.

It's about Spangly Jesus saving us from King Louie, and learning not to stand in a line and let people kill you.

Can we not have one thread about America without it talking about Iraq, fat people, or the perception America thinks its the shizzle? Grow up guys, America is just a freaking country that is no more important than any others, despite what the minority of American idiots do or say. Just like we try to ignore the minority of non-American idiots who talk bad about America.

I think the important thing to remember is that one day we might just feel like we can forgive America, and when that days comes we might just let you all back into the empire.
