Neither country was really ready for war but America was desperate to assert itself as a power (not super, just a power). I think we accomplished that much as a nation. Its like standing up to a bully. We didn't win the fight but we did win some respect for starting the fight.

I'm sure Germans from one part of Germany say that to Germans from other parts of Germany. Germany still lost the war though.

The World War V.18.12, of course! When the Germans invaded Sri Lanka but were counter invaded by Lesotho. Even though the Germans won plenty of beach front property, they lost a few holdings in the diamond industry. So, whether they won or not is a matter of perspective.

Vietnam is a touchy issue that has traumatized an entire generation of Americans. I know a guy who was taught that they won Nam but they didn't teach him who Stalin, Oswald or Churchill were.

That's funny actually, because I think that whole argument (whether we won or not) is a joke. If you keep score by body count and tactical engagements, we did win. However, in the end they took there country away from us. Tactical victories became irrelevant. We still left. I always laugh when someone starts on their, "We won every military engagement in Vietnam" argument. Its a clear case of denial. We were going against so many of SunTzu's tenets as soon as we stepped foot in that country it is actually a surprise we lasted so long.

It seems like Vietnam was quite a bit like the American Revolution, actually. Huge nation with impressive, well trained army, going against politically-inspired guerrilla forces that know the land, and are backed up by a powerful enemy of the first force. Huge nation wins most major engagements, is still unable to win the war on account of its expense and lack of popular support.

(We probably should have thought of that before going.)

I have three thoughts on this...

1.) But the zombies over ran our asses.

2.) It was a short lived capture and in the end it was beauty that killed the beast.

3.) No one ever got the best of Gojira. You kill him and he just keeps coming back stronger. Poor Japan.

Jack Black was in that? Oh, right! I had blocked that pile of Gorilla dung from my memory, thanks for reminding me of that crappy version. Honestly I'd rather watch Charles Grodin, Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange run around again then sit through that Peter Jackson pile.

The British army was at a low ebb in the 1770s-80s, actually, compared to the 1750s-60s and 1800s.

The NVA was a veteran force with an excellent record against the Japanese in WW2 and the colonial French in the 50s.

However, if you look at Vietnam now, it is pursuing a capitalist agenda much the same way as Red China. It's pretty clear that the communist ideals which inspired the NVA victory have failed.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

But was it still better trained and maintained than the American militias? I would have to think so.

The NVA was a veteran force with an excellent record against the Japanese in WW2 and the colonial French in the 50s.
Yes, but a large part of America's defeat in the south was due to the Vietcong. However, I may have simplified it too much with "well trained". I probably should have said "well supported", as it was things like air power and artillery that gave America a lot of their edge in that war. (And naval superiority helped the British out quite a bit, until France evened it out.)

However, if you look at Vietnam now, it is pursuing a capitalist agenda much the same way as Red China. It's pretty clear that the communist ideals which inspired the NVA victory have failed.
Yep. It didn't turn out particularly similar in the end.

This thread has barely been on topic at all! What is the topic anyway? Good nature-ed ribbing back and forth across the pond?

Anyway, I prefer the old RKO version of King Kong the best, Ah yeah!!!

We definitely lost Vietnam. That'll teach us to keep trying to save France's arse repeatedly.

America lost the War of 1812? I'll have to readjust all history books I've read on the subject, definitely.

I wouldn't call having the White House burned a major victory.
