I hope it isn't a gakky console game ported over to PC with a "massive" roster of 20 'Mechs and a whopping 6-8 hours of gameplay.
Given current technology and the advent of the DVD (yes, the last MW game was that long ago) they can expand the roster of 'Mechs. I want to have at least 50 in there. I know that sounds strange, but given how many battles you have to fight in these games, I'd get tired of fighting the same 3-4 IS Heavy 'Mechs in every battle.
MW4 and MW4:Mercs became mind-numbing towards the end when every 'Assault Lance' basically just had Daishis, Mad Cat Mk.II's, Atlases and Fafnirs because that's all that was in the game (they only used the others on Solaris).
And that's the other thing, if it's not a Clan-based game, don't have 50% of the 'Mechs being Clan. Nothing was more silly in the opening movie of MW4 than a Lance of PDZ troops having THREE Clan Omni-Mechs in it. There is no way a FedCom world that boarders the Draconis Combine would have local miltia piloting front-line Clan Omni's. It was just absurd.

Ah yeah. That would be horrible if it was a crappy console port and turned out like MechAssault.
How many 'Mechs did MW4: Mercs have? It has the highest number of mechs, right? I think it was a decent bit more than 20, but I can't remember for sure.
Whether or not it's Clan-based or not, I hope there's a decent mix of Clan and Inner Sphere mechs. Although I agree that you should find Clan mechs in places where they make sense.

Just over 40% of them were clan, and most of the heavy 'Mechs were Clan designs, meaning that whenever you were fighting Heavy 'Mech forces you faced endless streams of Arguses and Thanatos', which was crazy given that they were brand new designs and they kept cropping up all-over the Inner Sphere. Mech4 Mercs got it a bit better in that you often only faced Clan 'Mechs when fighting the Clans themselves, but it led to the same problem - with such a void in the Heavy 'Mech area, you just ended up facing the same 'Mechs over and over. The 'Mech Paks added more, but anyone who bought them must've had a recent lobotomy, and MWMercs did add a few nice new interesting things (Wolfhounds, Longbows, Templars, etc.), but it was still the latest of the latest IS 'Mechs, Clan 'Mechs, and a few old favs like the Catapult, Raven, Atlas and Bushwacker.
There just needs to be about 50-60 'Mechs with around 20 Clan and 40 IS so you can have 10 different from each weight class ensuring that the battles don't become monotonous.

Okay, 21 in MW4. But to be fair, I was asking specifically about MW4: Mercs, because I know it has more than regular MW4.
It's at least 26 (but I think more than that - around 30 maybe?) because off the top of my head there's the ones you listed (including the Wolfhound, Longbow, and Templar), as well as the Flea, the Uller (I think) and the Black Knight.
I agree though. 50-60 Mechs with 20-25 being Clan and the rest IS would be great.

Mercs had quite a few more. There were the new ones (Black Knight, Uller, Flea, Templar, Longbow, Wolfhound, Hellfire, Gladiator (I think?), Ryoken) plus all the ones from the 'Mech Paks (Dragon, Highlander, Zeus, Hunchback, Masakari, Kodiak, Cauldron Born, Arctic Wolf). You couldn't ever use the MekPak ones though, which was a shame. Their weapons were screwy as well, more screwy than the usual MW4 shenanigans - the Dragon had a Heavy Gauss Rifle FFS!!!!!

HO-LY GAK. It's been a long time! I've immensely enjoyed Machwarrior 3 and moderately enjoyed 4 with its expansions but I'm still starved for good mech combat. Sure there was Mech Commander 1 & 2..

It's fragfest time again!!! Man am I glad I just upgraded my PC. By this time in the Battletech timeline, the difference between Clan and Inner Sphere mechs isn't as drastic as it used to be, so there should be less standard mechs and more customization available. I don't care what the single-player missions are, because I've never finished them in any of the previous games. As long as I can lan with a group of similarly minded nerds with equally powerful sub-woofers, I'm doing the thirty foot tall armored death machine version of the happy dance.

I'd loooooooooooooooooooooovvvve a new good Mechwarrior game (and a MC3 based on MC1 sounds like a sweet idea as well).
Personally I'd love a game based on MW2-Mercenaries. Basically 3025 tech, that upgrades to 3039 and brings in the whole Clan sjebang later on. All the while, doing missions for money, salvage and reputation with a nice mech customization option.
Ah, sweet dreams.........

If we are going by BTech fluff the answer to that would be:
1. Not really. ClanTech is still beyond the reach of most of the IS and while the gap has been shrinking, it's still quite a chasm. Add to that that the Clans aren't stagnant in their Tech, they've been improving as well. Ever heard of a HAG?
2. Not really. BattleMechs still take days to customise, especially when you're mixing non-standard parts (and that's before we even get to ClanTech). OmniMechs do change that somewhat, but there aren't all that many IS Omni's, and a lot of manufacturing firms have gone for the " Bugger it, let's make more regular 'Mechs for the same price as one Omni'" approach to 'Mech design.

The Mechwarrior games were based on BattleTech, the ledgendary 'big fighty robot' tabletop game of the past 25 years (celebrating it's 25th year this year actually). Mechwarrior 2 was a major breakthrough back in the day (I played it on my Pentium 166 if that gives anyone an idea of how long ago it was), and MW2: Mercs is held up as the best of the lot, allowing you run your own Merc unit and fight across many major battlefields against a lot of different types of enemies.
MW3 improved that by having amazing graphics (they're pretty decent even today) and upgraded combat. Fantastic game. MW4 was a bit of a lateral shift - it did things better than MW3, but also some things worse. Its expansions improved on that, with MW4:Mercs capturing some of what made MW2: Mercs so good.
MechCommander isn't a sim, it's a Real Time Tactical game where you'd control up to a full Company of 'Mechs(12 'Mechs) using persistant forces and pilots, pilots who would get better over time and 'Mechs that would get better as you salvaged and captured better equipment and even better 'Mechs. Very hard game, unforgiving in some areas, but a blast to play. My fav MW game of all time and one of my fav games of all time.
MechCommander 2 was... not as good. I'll leave it at that.

Mech5 Update:
It's a reboot of the video game franchise
It's set in 3015 (!) on a planet between the FedSuns and Kurita border
Uses the Unreal 3 engine, so lots of performance on fairly modest horsepower. You may not need to upgrade your PC.
Explicitly going for a deep, immersive, and long single-player experience (not a 6-hour game here)
It's supposed to specifically incorporate up to 4-player co- op play across both PC and Xbox360 platforms
Multiplayer will happen.
There ARE Unseen designs in it (Warhammer in the video trailer, for example). I wonder what this had to do with CGL getting the rights to the Unseens back?
Extremely destructible environments - a building can only support up to so much Mech on top of it before it collapses, and you can shoot the building out from under them.
They're still looking for a publisher, but all the major publishers have been in contact with Smith&Tinker. S&T were basically just waiting on the release so they could prove "fan interest" to any given publisher.
All videos shown are "in-game" footage, not cutscenes.
They're looking to include an experience system - the longer you pilot a given Mech, the more proficient with it you get from a mechanical perspective (weapons do more damage, you gain a little speed or delta-v, etc).
They're going out of their way to make the game NOT "just a race to the biggest mechs" - scout Mechs, for example, are required to keep LOS to the enemy so you can keep track of where they are. If they can shake their tails, they disappear from your tracking systems and you have to find them again (no red box tracking targets EVERYWHERE on the map).
They're explicitly campaigning against the "jumping alpha-strike sniper" style of multiplayer play. Don't expect that to work in this version.

I liked the part where the pilot actually punched a button on the console, little touches like that make me a happy gamer. Imagine my surprise when while playing F.E.A.R. I could see my own legs.

Imagine my surprise in tresspasser when you had to look down to see your health meter - a small heart-shaped tatoo on your character's brests.
Yes, you played a woman in a low cut top!!
But it was cool actually having legs in FEAR, rather than being a disembodied camera with a gun stuck on.
The big 6-page interview over at IGN talks a bit more about the game, and says things like the hands moving in the cockpit might not stay in the game (things like that are budget dependant, so things that aren't immediately necessary for gameplay could be cut in favour of more important features, as you'd expect).
What concerns me though is Weisman's very cavalier attitude towards 'his' MechWarrior. He almost seems to purposefully ignore the fact that BTech didn't end with FASA and has continued (and grown) through Fanpro and now Catalyst over the past 8 years. I really hope he isn't just ignoring those that have fought for and kept BTech going so that he can be the 'Mechwarrior franchise's' self-appointed saviour.

That video is nuts, and I hope they keep in the little touches like the pilot's hands and that sort of thing.
This has the potential to be really good. I hope they put the work into this project that it deserves, and don't release something too arcade-y and disappointing.
Not that I have a problem with some arcade type games, but Mechwarrior should be a Mech simulator, not an arcade game.
