There are actualy thousands (if not millions) of Green Lanterns,and yes IIRC the current Earth 1 GL is African American,however,as Deadshane 1 pointed out,Hal Jordan (who the film will be about apparently) was a White guy.
But...Ryan Reynolds?

Not anymore he ain't. At least not for a while. GL trumps Deadpool easily.
I read they want a $150-200 mil budget. I think Dark Knight was in that range, and GL will have huge amounts of SFX. Would $200 mil even be enough?

HARD FREAKING CORE.
"Note"
I think he is trying to find words to describe his self proclaimed coolness.
"Sub-note"
I always thought the black GL made more sense for some reason. Maybe black (brown really) looks better with green than... well pink really.
Can we get a story about an alien GL, I think it would be a lot better than what I expect from this movie.

I think that's a solid enough piece of casting.
I can't help but think that given the excitement over the Blackest Night story which is about to happen they've --again-- missed the boat slightly with regards to timing. But I guess it'll give the TPBKS a boost when it rolls out.
If they get the affects right, and refrain from having him constantly just making giant boxing gloves then this could be pretty cool.
I'd be well happy if they actually showed us some huge intergalatic war in space with loads of GLC --no, not Goldie Lookin' Chain -- members fighting.
I hope they don't try and use the crappy old "doesn't work against yellow" thing as that will ruin it. One of the best things they did was getting rid of that.

Green Lantern could be cool, I tried reading one of the series a while ago. Never have been a DC guy. Anyway as I read the story I couldn't get over all of the silly alien green lanterns. They had this green lantern that was a wasp, I'm not talking the buggy waspy like creatures from Star Wars, but an actual yellow jacket, with a green lantern suit? Not to mention the floating in space whales and all other wierd alien madness. Just not my cup of tea.
Howeverk, if they stick with the green lantern vs the bad guy, evil lantern(can't remember his name at the moment), it could be a good movie.

Frazzled, there's already a superhero 'spoof' movie coming out with Christopher Mintz-Plassen(aka: McLovin from Superbad) in the lead.
I think it's called Ass Kickers? Or something like that. Based off some comic book where a teenager starts dressing like a superhero and trying to fight crime because of one of those wackjob "real life" Superheroes out in Denver and the like.

IIRC the "evil" lanterns name was Sinestro (not sure on the spelling).

The... original (really though???) Green lantern.
Here are the GL's powers, I think he may be missing perhaps one... or two powers. Why is this guy on a team again? Why not have a GL team? Oh, well...
Wiki wrote:Power rings as used by various wielders have exhibited (but are not limited to) the following effects:
* Creates solid 'light energy' which is only limited by the mind
* Constructs of green 'solid-energy,' often of tremendous size and/or complexity.
* Flight, including flight at speeds beyond that of light.
* Plasma bolts.
* Ability to walk through walls by traveling through 'the Fourth Dimension' [Alan Scott]
* The rings can act as semi-sentient computers, including accessing the Book of Oa, a massive database of everything from the laws of the Guardians and the Corps to the history of the universe.
* Time travel (One solitary power ring cannot generate enough power for time travel. Several power rings are needed to complete this feat.)
* The rings are still reliant on the lantern-shaped power batteries, but no longer limited to 24 hours' charge as they originally were. Kyle Rayner's ring was the first ring to absorb more power than originally thought, having stored the main power battery's energy following its explosion on Oa.
* Telepathic powers.
* Translation of virtually all languages.
* Force field generation.
* Radiation, including simulated kryptonite radiations.
* Generate "earplugs" to block out all telepathic communication and manipulation.[7]
* Render user invisible.[8]
* Green Lantern: Rebirth revealed that only a certain type of willpower can use the ring effectively, as evidenced when Green Arrow's "cynical" willpower barely allows him to generate a single arrow and leaves him exhausted after this feat.
* Put humans into a state of suspended animation [9]
* Fast healing of wounds.
* Size manipulation allowing ringbearer to grow or shrink in size.
If I am not mistaken the Green Lantern's statistics are more suited to a solo-hero, or even a villain. I am getting slightly confused, mainly because Green lanterns looks less like a team player (which is usually what he is portrayed as) and more like a kick ass and take names kind of symbol. Why is he always getting his butt-kicked or just sitting there with a force-field like "I MUST PROTECT MY FRIENDS!", as the city is burnt and smashed into pieces around them.
What a selfish douche

There is the Golden Age Green Lantern who's His ring was magic and could not manipulate wood.
There is Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern. He had a sci-fi origin, befitting the nuclear age.
The Third is Guy Gardner. He was Hal's backup and more of a bit player. He once got punched out by Batman.
The fourth was John Stewart.
The last is Kyle Rayner. He became a living Green Lantern at one point called.
I never read the comics but I have a friend who is nutty for Green Lantern. If you want to see a really decent story with the origin of Green Lantern rent Justice League: The New Frontier. Besides having a great art style it deals with the transition of the Golden Age into the Silver Age characters and has some great battle sequences.

Ryan Reynolds? Why do people like him? I've never seen him in a movie where I liked him. Maybe I can't get past Van Wilder or whatever, but I just don't care for him.
Green Lantern, if done well, could be great. Based on DC's recent track record, I bet it's lousy and a bomb. Also, while Hal Jordan is the 'classic' GL that most of us remember, but I think the film would get more press if they based it on John Stewart (and it would be a tie-in to the Justice League cartoons).

I understand why Ryan Reynolds is sometimes hated by people - it's mostly due to that smarmy way he carries himself in most of his movies (Van Wilder being a prime example). Granted, that's part of the reason why I like him.
That being said, ugh. I don't think this is good casting at all.

Ryan Reynolds really isn't going to make or break the movie. The story, script and direction are the things. If those are good, Reynolds is competent enough to pull it off.
Just look at what happened to every good actor who starred in a Star Wars movie after TESB. Ford? Wimpy. Neeson? Stale. McGregor? Lame. Portman and Christensen were flatout awful in the prequels, but suddenly, magically learned how to act again once they weren't working for Lucas. How strange.
@dietrich -- Warner/ DC's most recent history is The Dark Knight, right? I think Warner/ DC likely learned a lot from Nolan's Batman films, especially the importance of story, script and director.
