DC also had Superman Returns, which was OK (imho, although I don't think it did very well at the box office). I see Batman Begins and Dark Knight as exceptions to DC's track record. Going all the way back in time, the first two Christopher Reeves movies were good, the last two lousy. While some marvelled at them, I never liked the Tim Burton series of Batman, which concluded with George Clooney (iirc - honestly, I've tried to scrub that from my brain). So, that's 2 good Superman, 1 OK Superman, 2 bad Superman, 2 good Batman, and 4 bad Batman films. 4-1-6.

Marvel seems to have figured it out better than DC, which has been slow to release any movies. I think Marvel has let go some OK flicks, but they've generally been pretty good (3 Spiderman films, 2 out of 3 X-Men, Ironman, Elektra vs. X-Men 3, Daredevil, with the last two Hulk films in the OK category (for me at least)). So, that's like 7-2-2.

Now, part of this is because of the negotiation of rights. With Marvel being its own studio, they get a lot more pull, and that's a huge difference.

The Tim Burton Batman flicks(Batman and Batman Returns, I can't recall if Batman Forever was him or Schumacher. I know Schumacher was Batman & Robin though) were okay. They weren't as good as Dark Knight/Batman Begins though.

Superman, in my opinion, can make for a boring movie though. He's just so...bland.

And Marvel's just figured out that they can release a series of turds, then a good one to get people's hopes up for the NEXT one to be good--then bomb them down with more turds.

Ok, whats the hook for those who don't know anything about Green Lantern? Being almost omnipotent doesn't work for me.

I think thats a hook for the popular two Spiderman and DK films-they feel realistic and the heroes could be killed off.

He just carries a "magic" -- it's superscience, so it is really-- ring instead of a six shooter. Which let's him fly and travel through space.

And create stuff.

the idea is sound enough, and he's got a good visual appeal with modern CGI and what he can do with his ring.

He's also a test pilot as well for the all american hero aspect as well.

I believe he votes Republican as well....

Hal Jordan is definitely a Republican. If they'd put Green Arrow (who's at best a Democrat, possibly just an anarchist) in the movie, I might be interested.

" at best" a Democrat ? WTF ? The;ms fightin' words !

Much as I enjoyed the new "Cry for Justice" series the bit where GA says " Remember back in the day...when I lost my millions and became liberal" did make me want to shoot James Robinson ( the author) for writing that

But.. GL... well.... he is merciless..

*facepalm*

No, I'm saying Ford was terrible in ROTJ, unless you like your Han Solos to be sensitive men who enjoy macrame. Lucas also didn't direct Raiders of the Lost Ark. That was Spielberg back before he caught Lucasitis.

And case in point, the latest Indy movie had Ford but no story or script and you saw what happened.

Actually, he's not omnipotent...the ring's limit is determined by the wearer's willpower. Theoretically it can do almost anything given enough force of will.

GL isn't grim, gritty superhero stuff. It's more space opera. Hence my comment about budgets.

The hook is that the Green lantern is just a normal guy that even Batman can knock the #%$ out... oh and he wears spandex and a superbowl ring.

It grossed almost $400 million dollars, which isn't to bad. With over 10 years in production (not this specific Superman movie, just a Superman movie in general) and X number of writers and y number of directors and so on and so forth they were hoping for more.

Oh man, someone suggested Hugh Laurie to play Sinestro (completely speculative, no basis to truth). That would be awesome.

Green Arrow (specifically the Silver Age version) is quite possibly my favorite superhero, evah. Marvel's archer, Hawkeye, is up there as well. GA has been portrayed several ways over the years, including a borderline communist or socialist (as well as eco terrorist, and probably a few other 'ists' as well).

I didn't realize it did that good, but yeah, that isn't Dark Knight numbers either.

IIRC, Tim Burton spent millions on preproduction for his Superman movie that never happened. This was back in the mid-1990s. An interesting fact -- (a digitally altered) Pittsburgh was going to be Metropolis. I think Burton said he liked its gothicness, although the building that was to be LexCorp HQ -- PPG Place -- is hardly gothic.

http://www.aviewoncities.com/pittsburgh/ppgplace.htm

Pittsburgh does have a very nice skyline, though.

http://pittsburghskyline.com/content/2009/01/08/pittsburgh-for-january-2009/

The City-County building, which is where I worked at the time, was to be the Daily Planet.

While this was all cool, it's undoubtedly best the movie never happened. It was to star Nic Cage and the script purportedly included gems like Luthor and Brainiac merging to become Lexiac! As bad/weird/creepy as Superman Returns was, it didn't ruin the character for future installments/reboots. I think Burton would have ensured another Superman movie didn't get made for 25 years.

They folded some of the Burton ideas into the animated Superman : Doosmday cartoon -- mainly the Kevin Smith ideas though I believe, hence his knowing "cameo". The vids of Kevin Smith talking about his experiences on the project are on youtube and well worth a watch. Make you wonder about Hollywood anyway.

Ah, gotcha. Way you phrased it I thought you were bad mouthing the best archer in a comic book setting ( except maybe Merlyn ) for his stances. Two nations one language etc etc.

Only slight problem I can see with the GL movie is that he lacks any real archenemy other than Sinestro.... who falls prey to the old "he's just an evil version of the hero" syndrome and his story would detract from the overall coolness of the corp itself.

I hope they throw in some references to other DC cities and heroes though... "the freak in Gotham".. or the alien in Metropolis and so on.

Yeah, I've seen some of the Kevin Smith stuff. His script wasn't bad, although what I read of the changes that Burton & co. made were pretty appalling.

FWIW, there were (highly favorable) script reviews of GL floating around last year. Here's the links. But a major warning that they do contain spoilers.
