So I've embarked on the mission to raise my very own Regiment of Imperial Guard.

Only trouble is, I want at least twelfty of everything in the list, and I am genuinely struggling to commit myself to a single list. Given this lack of decisiveness, the only rationale I can make at the moment is to sort out my HQ and 2 Troops, which is going to be pretty standard.

So where do I go from here? Do I just keep adding odds and sods willy nilly on a whim or should I really put a rocket up myself and nail down an initial list to start from? Thankfully, money isn't a huge worry for me, but I do intend to paint as I buy. Couple of purchases a week ought to be tolerable as a painting regime.

Help me, please. Before I go out of my mind and/or bankrupt...

Thus far, I have 2 squads of Infantry, 2 command squads, and an additional box of Infantry to make the most of the spare bits left over from the command sprues, seeing as they very kindly put lots and lots of special weapons on for my delectation.

Oddly, the lack of a theme is what has drawn me to the IG. The amount of stuff available quickly drowns out any theme I can envisage in the quest for ever more models, and higher amounts of dakka from them.

I'm normally all over themes, as my Fantasy armies prove, but this time I just can't settle on one. Though having said that, I will be painting them up as Cadians, but possibly using the alternative pattern uniforms from the previous Codex. The red one ought to be quick and easy to mass produce, with or without the judicious application of the spraygun loaded with Mechrite Red.

Mech kind of appeals, as I am a Treadhead now and again, but even so, the visual spectacle of an infantry horde is also appealing. Eventually, I can see my collection being two of everything, except stuff I really like, when I'll have three, so I'll be able to pick a mission theme for every game, but in the meantime, I guess I'm a bit too flighty to settle.

I like tanks and I like lots of men, so I try and go for both. I usually play 2000 pt friendly games, never tourneys. But, I usually will divide my list in half, 1000 or so pts of men, and all the rest in tanks.

But for my men, I have multiple copies of every special weapon, so I can build my platoons with plasmas, or flamers or meltas or whatever, depending on the game.

I think the best way to start out is 1 battalion box plus 1 extra box of men. This should give you enough men for 1 CCS, 1 PCS, 2 infantry squads, 1 HW squad plus if you use the leftover men and bitz you can make 2 HW squads if you buy some spare big bases. Then throw in a vet unit and a few tanks and you got a nice core army to build off of.

Go with the basics then: 1 command squad, 1 platoon and 1 penal / veterans squad. BUILD THE BASE FIRST, bother with the rest later.

Why not do a Guard Crusade army if you're having problems with a theme, Grotsnik?

You could paint/model 'em up as units from different regiments set in an operation together.
Penal Legion from a Last Chancer styled operation, Hardened Veterans from the Cadian 8th, mechanized troopers from another regiments, etc?

Ask H.B.M.C. what he's got and then don't worry about how much you might end up buying. Just don't bother asking him to recommend where to buy them.

Since you want a little of everything I'd just accept that fact and then buy what strikes your fancy. Start with an HQ and 2 Troops so you can build up to a playable force and take advantage of your plan to paint as you go. If you burn out on painting troops buy a tank next and vice versa.

Not terribly fussed by the Veterans to be honest. I will include them at some point, but to punctuate their special nature, perhaps only a squad or two amongst large Infantry Platoons.

Incidentally, last night using bits from the two command sets, I knocked up 2 Snipers, a kneeling Flamer, and a Meltagunner. Would anyone particularly reccomend Special Weapon squads as attachments? I'm thinking it might make for a fairly cool army list if the only Heavy and Special weapons are in dedicated squads, allowing me to use the Infantry Squads purely as counter infantry units?

Flamers, meltas and democharges are "the best" equipment. Makes a rather hardhitting special unit. Just as its meant to be. Sniperrifles are kinde meh, use ratlings rules with cool models instead. They can actually snipe stuff and are much cheaper.

Combined squads can also be surprisingly good with a commissar, some powerweapons and some assult special weapons. Lots of bodies and dakka!

Not sure about Power Weapons in the standard squads. Kind of drip feeding info I know, but I see such things as extremely rare in the IG, almost like Magic Weapons in Fantasy. I know it impacts on the squads efficiency, but I have a mental block against spending points on a Power Weapon for a Sargeant, as I feel if the enemy get close enough for fisticuffs, then I deserve a good kicking, Seriously!

So yeah, general gaming philosophy is to accept weakness, and play to strength. And for the IG, the Lasgun is strength. I might well need a lot them, but then, that really shouldn't be a problem!
