Hi all, first of all, Im not sure where to put this post, because there is no fantasy discussions section. Ive searched the forums for an answer, and though I think I can remember seeing something about this I cant, for the life of me find it now. I am trying to get into fantasy, I have been playing 40k for some time, and have always wanted to get into fantasy, but never got passed learning the rules. What list size ought I start out with if I want to get in some games and learn the rules? In 40k I think I started with 400pt lists in combat patrol, and worked my way from there, but it was a number of years ago. Is there a similar concept in fantasy, and does anyone out there actually play games at those point levels, or is fantasy a game only for large armies?

well i started about 2 months ago and i just bought a battalion. at my local hobby store people are willing to scale down. but i also had two friends starting at the same time and played with them a lot. but by this friday i'm going to have my army finished so i added to mine fast, but my suggestion to you is buy a battalion look for a lord conversion from a normal guy. i used a saurus cavalry as an old blood with some upgrades. after i did that i had about 1k points and that's easy to find a pug. but i'm about to be in your shoe's semi soon because i want to slowing build a 40k army.

I'm just getting started on my first army. I'm collecting the models slowly, so I'll have to play plenty of skirmishing games before my horde is complete (not that I know how big it will get). I've already got a couple lords and some snotlings so I need to get my first unit of night goblins next.
But small games are a part of WHFB. THey can be played on their own or as a lead in to a bigger battle.

I started out with about 500 points. I increased up by 100 to 200 points every few weeks as I became more comfortable with the rules. Now I play 2000 pts with my goblins. Start small and move up as you feel comfortable. I left magic out altogether until 1000 pts.

You can play almost any army at 500 points, it won't be anything more than a hero and a couple of core units. If you are lucky/frugal with points, you can fit in some specials. That point level is good for demo games and getting a feel for the rules. 1000 is probably the smallest you would want to play more than a couple of times. At that point level you can start to personalize your army, as you have points for multiple heroes and specials. As for what you should get starting out: a battalion box is the quickest and cheapest way to get points built up quickly. A battalion and a hero will get you pretty close to 750-1000 depending on which army.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like 500 is where I start.

I scaled up 500 - 750 - 1000 - 1250 - 1500 - 2000.

It definitely helps to start off at the lower points and build up a bit so you learn more and more aspects of the game as you progress.

Agreed. That's what we're doing for our league right now.

500 - 1k - 1500 - 2250. It's just trying to get everyone to keep up on their painting as we add new things.

WHFB is a nice change of pace to 40k.
