Like Favourite Movie, but cooler.
Mine is (at the moment) Hunger Games (HG).
It was a fantastic read, and made me wonder what on earth I would do if I was put in a situation like that. Literally couldn't put it down.

Hard to say, but probably the Jerusalem Man trilogy by David Gemmell. It's set 300 years after the Atlanteans tried to open a gate into the present day to escape the flood that destroyed them, and instead flooded the 20th century world, tipping the planet on its axis (whatever than means).
Basically, humanity has progressed to the sort of mid-late 19th century, and the setting is a bit like the Wild West with more GRIMDARK (tm). It's about a man who fights brigands to protect people while searching for Jerusalem and the answers it contains in this post-apocalyptic world. Over the course of three books, he graphically shoots a few brigands, goes Rambo on a Satanic city and kills its leadership, banishing a dark spirit (supposedly the Big Red Dude himself) back to Hell, wanders some more, saves a race of werewolf-type things, stops a nuke frozen in time from destroying his country, does some more stuff to do with the Bible, regains his youth, becomes a preacher, goes flying rodent gak when his Congregation is butchered by religious zealots, kills some of them, gets thrown back in time, lives through to the post-apocalyptic world as an old preacher, and ends up killing Satan with a nuke.
Pretty hardcore if you ask me.

The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. An alien unwittingly opens up the place where the souls of the dead are being stored until the death and rebirth of the universe, and so the dead start possessing the living all over the Galaxy. A real epic.

The first book is the best. The second and third really can't touch it.
My uncle recommended the series and I unwittingly bought the first book a few months later, got 1/4 of the way through it and thought "I'm sure I've heard of this story before"

Perhaps a discworld novel, or something by Robin Hobb... maybe Assassin's Apprentice.
Discworld quote:
Sunlight poured like molten gold across the sleeping landscape. Not precisely, of course. Trees didn't burst into flame, people didn't become very rich and extremely dead, and the seas didn't flash into steam. A better simile, in fact, would be 'not like molten gold'.

Yeah, I love Terry Pratchett's sense of humour. Too bad he karked it along with David Gemmell.

No he didn't. He's got Alzheimers, but he's still alive. Sure you aren't thinking David Eddings?
As for my favourite book... I don't really have one. Terry Pratchett is my favourite author though... I'm just hoping he manages to write a few more books.

No Fitz. It has the fool (as a woman named Amber) and it's written in the third person. It's more about slavery, rain wilds, bingtown etc. It wasn't bad. You could say the main character role is split between a boy, a pirate, a couple of different girls, a couple of ships (yes ships), and serpents.
I was like "WHAT!?!??!" when i read cheese's post..

Oh, I though he'd died a couple of years back. Silly internets lied to me. And I'm sure David Gemmell is dead. He died of Coronary Heart Disease while he was writing the last book in the Troy series. I don't know whether to be angry or sad; he left a few series unfinished. We're never going to know what became of the Rigante or the Drenai.

Pratchett's humour is sometimes too forced and slightly conceited. And I am not so keen on the shift of the sotry world in some of the books (espeicially how the Patrician is portrayed in the later books... I prefered him as the cold shadow in the background).
Although having said that I own all but about 2 or 3 of the series and love the majority of them

Yeah, David Gemmell left us. To be honest though his best works were his original 2 Rigante books (sword in the storm and midnight falcon). The Drenai series was pretty cool, though the stories had a few mistakes in places (like Waylander being attributed hero status by Druss - no-one knew he was a hero, he was always regarded as the assassin that killed the king).
But yeah, my favourite books are, in no particular order: Sword in the storm, Midnight Falcon, Lord of the rings and anything by Bill Bryson and Lee Child.

"Dead Center" by Edward Kueglar
It's the story of his life prior to, during, and shortly after the Vietnam War. He joined the Marines in the Late 60's and later joined the then budding Scout-Sniper school. He's no Carlos Hathcock, but the stories of the friends he makes (and loses) and the evolution of the war through his eyes makes for a memorable book.
You can tell by the end of the book that he feels like one of the "lucky" ones. He survives, but he is a different person afterwards. You feel like he grows up throughout the book and it is a hard read to put down.

Choosing one is kind of hard.
-Lord of the Rings (It's one book. That it's a trilogy is a common misconception)
-Andromeda Strain
-Terminal Man
-Animal Farm
-all the books in the Foundation series by Issac Asimov
- all the Harry Potter books
-Oh yes, The Invisible Man.
-all the Inheritance Cycle books
-Physics of the impossible by Michio Kaku
There's probably a lot more that I can't think of right now.
-Oh yes, The Invisible Man.

The SF Collection books are usually pretty good, you get a whole load of stories from people you might not otherwise have heard of, but because they are being backed by the SF brand, you know they will be good, and you can move onto their stuff from there.

There's a lot of fantasy here, which is interesting considering it wasn't so dominant in the movies thread.
I gotta admit I don't read a lot of fantasy. My favourite book is The Quiet American, by Graham Greene. But there's a bunch of other books I can't not mention, like Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie, 1984 by George Orwell, The Little Prince by some French guy, and The Gangs of New York by Herbert Ashbury.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I don't know about 'favorite' though... sometimes its like whatever I'm reading at the moment seems to be my favorite. I suppose my favorite book is something I've bothered to reread a couple times... and I think there's only been one: Bicycling Through Space and Time by Mike Sirota

I wrote a book report on Animal Farm in the 7th grade, and the teacher refused to accept it, saying that it was a college level book. The next report I turned in was on Watership Down. She rejected that one as well. She accepted the one on Chariots of the Gods by Erich Van Daniken, but with gritted teeth. I showed her to tell us we weren't limited to the school library.

by China Meiville, the most original fantasy setting I've ever encountered.
The early Clive Barker books, especially Imagica, The Great and Secret Show and Weaveworld.
And I just finished Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis and would strongly recommend it to anyone with a dark sense of humour and a strong stomach...
