Lord High Inquisitor Johnson has issued an ultimatum today to the editors of party rag 'White Dwarf'.

He was appalled at not one, but two tactics articles that provided genuinely useful information on how gamers could improve their chances of winning.

Former chief scribe Cavatore, now demoted to chief bottle washer following unproven heresy charges, defended his contribution to the article (where he talked about the importance of reducing the effectiveness of enemy shooting by going full mech or all infantry), saying that he had called such tactics 'extreme' and that he was obviously implying that only members of evil 'WAAC' cults would ever employ such tactics.

However, his previous history of creditable rules writing with LotR and 7th ed WFB (which many believe has led to his current lowly status) may count against him and who knows now how long it will be before he 'disappears'.

Now, while none of the tactics were earth shattering, this flagrant attempt to improve people's skill level instead of just saying 'buy more' and 'just have fun' has raised the ire of Inquisitor Johnson, who is threatening a pogrom against the WD staff if normal service is not resumed in the next issue.

I must go now, I can hear heavy boots on the stairs...

[/sarcasm]

Seriously - is it just me or was this months WD better than it has been for ages? (Note: not good yet, but better )

A GW tactica that doesn't boil down to "Everything is equally valid and useful, especially this month's new releases!"

Colour me shocked.

I wish they would bring back battle reports with a map and pics for each turn, like they did for 15 years, instead of the ridiculous 1-2 turns and a double page pic of the table with dot points down the side of the pic trying to explain what is happening.

What?

Is it April 1st at GW HQ or something?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

@BrookM - there were 2 tactics articles in this months WD, one for 40k IG and a Warmachines tactica for fantasy.

Although neither contained anything that an experienced player wouldn't know, the Warmachines article had good stuff in about deployment, firing arcs, area denial, redundancy and protection, whilst the IG actually had people advocating focussed force selection (all mech, all infantry, Stormie/Valk drops etc.)

@HBMC - yup, I went the same colour!

Alessio didn't write it all, but he was one of the authors on the IG article - he was the one who advocated going all mech to make your opponents S5 and under weaponry useless, or going all infantry so expensive las and melta weapons kill one guardsmen at a time.

@ Cheese Elemental - with the magazine being written roughly 1/4 year ahead of publishing date, it could well have been April 1st!

They finanally cancelled my [free] subscription a couple of months ago and I haven't seen a WD since but this has got me curious - is it worth the money or still a comlpete waste? (bear in mind I like the old interesting WDs from 8-10 years ago).

Thanks,

Rob

I dont care what they fill the space with (but would like to see more stuff along the lines of 'Brewhouse Bash' and other mini-games, plus more fluff generating articles and interesting tacticas/experimental rules) so long as they get rid of the 20-or-so pages advertising new stuff (used to be confined to couple) and restore the balance away from lotr

Oh I see.Well perhaps it's the start of a much welcome change, perhaps we'll get some nice useful articles and hopefully even a few helpful ones on their site.If they would devote time to writing nice articles and helpful modeling tutorials I would start buying WD again.I pick it up now and then but it's usually filled with the same "OOOOH,looks we gots new stuff, buy it's." So if they move away from that then I bet it could be a good mag again.I do understand they have a business to run and moving their products is there main goal.Yet I don't want it to be just one big advertisment.

No. I don't believe it. I get it now, this is all a prank, a test to see how gullible I am. WD is never good.

Show me proof of this miracle. If you're not all lying to me, I'll eat my hat.

I quit White Dwarf two issues ago. Clearly they immediately noticed, and are attempting to lure me back, hence the publication of decent articles. If they keep it up for another few issues, I might even buy one again.

Whoa, hold on, wait... they've stopped doing that? I know a while back they went back to doing it that way, proper maps, army lists and so on - are you saying they've gone back again to the small batrep with a photo of the table with a few boxes 'explaining' what happened? That, more than anything, was the reason I stopped buying WD back in the 90's. There was a month, around the time the 2nd Ed SoB Codex came out, where a 'BatRep' was a one page intro, a one page isometric photo of the table, and then two pages of each player summing up.

Where was the report?

Are you really telling me that they've gone back to this???

Ketara for the sake of the general WD reading public never buy one again!

Perhaps they will try too hard to get you reading again and I can score a free box set given away with a white dwarf(I can dream can't I)!

People are misunderstanding, This months WD is the same as last months, same old Drivle. Only exciting thing that happened this month was alessio actually said hers a way to deny your opponent points or targets etc. Basic tactic by most peoples standards.

however it goes against the whole image JJ is promoting, the have fun attitude.

I concur that this month's WD is actually half good. Good tactics articles and some informative painting stuff (always wanted to know how you achieve the look of a heavily used flamer). The battle report almost has a map per turn (pity it's WoTR, but never mind). It is still however exceptionally stingy on preview stuff. Two pics of Space Wolves and nay a mention of anything to follow after the Space Pups (which we know to be Skaven).

Yeah but sadly GW has really been cutting down on what info leaves the studio. Staff members only being given the Black Box 4 weeks before release for example. Maybe GW realised that surprise releases, and cool new stuff you didn't know about is the way forward . . . kinda adds to the whole impulse buying aesthetic of any hobby.

In other news, I stand by previous statements in other threads, WD isn't as bad as people say, it is still full of good information, tactics, Apocalypse formations etc . . . and the tutorials that have been cut down on can instead be found FOR FREE on the interwebz, just look at the sheer amount of articles on the website.

Admittedly it still astounds me that they haven't released any full squad pictures of the new Space Puppies, or even the usual release of the front cover of the codex . . . but hey that's life.
