I have an old one somewhere (well old for me . . .) . . . and it has an awesome Diorama piece on it. It's a piratical raid by Dark Eldar breaking through an Imperial Guard defense line . . . It's so unbelievably cool, especially as DE are my favourite army.
More cool dioramas would be nice . . . I mean yes there are some cool premaid ones now (Witch King and Eowyn, The Chase etc), but some hand made awesomeness all covered in greatness would really liven up WD.

I remember when we'd get big looks at diorama's that they'd made, like one where the Wood Elf Glade Riders had just come out, so either Jes Goodwin or Mike McVey (one of the two) made a cool diorama of then springting out of the forrest and into a block of skeletons.
Or the big multi-level Warhammer Quest diorama - that was great too!

Ah yes, your first WD.
Mine came with a Sabbat flexi-disk. 3rd ed WHFB was about to be released. Glory days, long gone.
That a single piece of actual common sense being used in WD should generate a thread like this must speak volumes about the current state of the magazine.

It was Mike McVey (if you desperately wanted to know)
He also put together a really cool Wood Elf army in WD once. That's what I miss, army of the month articles (which bear no relation to the current release).

Yea, the battle reports were fantastic. I really liked citadel journal too that was a great read. Just pages of great stuff. I think the thing I miss most about the white dwarf was that this was before the internet somewhat and the rules boyz would actually answer questions.
I still have my white dwarfs with the eversor, vindicare and callidus around.
Oh wait remember the necrons came out in white dwarf as well with some scenarios.

The Dark Eldar slave raid was made by the Games Workshop Canadian Events Team for Games Day 2001 IIRC, back when there was a Canadian Events Team. I had the privilege of seeing portions of it being made up at the time. J B was an absolute genius when it came to terrain building and a great guy. I was aghast when GW Canada let him go.
Oshova wrote:It would be awesome if WD could be more like other magazines. The good ol' days of Chapter Approved . . . where I started by Kroot addiction actually . . . Also all the tips on making scenery, painting techniques are great . . . but sadly only pop up from time to time. Basically if you took all the stuff from 3 or 4 White Dwarfs and put that in each month's WD then it would be better . . . obviously some stuff would have to be cut, as you don't want to be buying a new book every month. But the basic principle of all those juicy articles being regulars is brilliant =D
The clear solution here is to make White Dwarf a quarterly double-sized magazine. That would shut the naysayers up. Ram it chock-full of modelling goodness and include a 10 cent plastic frame or something in it to entice buyers to swallow its $25 cost. Oh yeah... yearly subscriptions for $80 bundled with a $25 GW coupon would be awesome too.
Strangely, I do not have any problems with GW's LOTR articles. In my opinion, LOTR has some of the best modelling, terrain, and scenario content in the entire magazine. It is unfortunate that it is for a game that is not regularly played, but the QUALITY of the content is generally leaps and bounds over the 40k/Fantasy content, which often times seems phoned in.
I have a White Dwarf from the time of the Fantasy Albion Campaign. They need to have more sculpting articles. The step by step creation article for the Dark Emissary by Chris Fitzpatrick was excellent and really gave a lot of insight into how to work with greenstuff... moreso than the typical, roll out a sausage of GS, flatten and form type articles that usually get printed. These days, the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass is usually anything but - most articles are overly basic. Other features such as "Tale of four gamers" and "Army Showcases" are other easy ways of filling up space with good content. White Dwarf needs more like this.

I would say the single best issue that I remember was I think 173 that I believe had the vindicare assassin in it. i just remember waiting on wednesday so we could get it and see the rules. I played smurfs at the time so having something like that in my army helped a lot.
It was pretty great ah memories.

WD is an advertisement, so it needs to be monthly, rather than quarterly.
LotR may not be regularly played by you, but it is played enough to sell volumes and move to mass battle gaming.
I agree that the LotR content has a lot of energy that seems lacking for the older games. Perhaps it's that we've become jaded after 20+ years of each system?

Trustworthy Shas'vre

I looked through one of my girlfriend's magazines today. You know, Cosmo, Cleo, that kind of thing. And there is a LOT of advertising - every 4th page of an articles with at least a double spread in between articles.
The thing is though, the content (or what passes for content in those magazines) has nothing to do with what is being advertised.
Compare to GW: There are 10 pages of ads on the first page for the latest release. Then a 'sprue preview of the lastest release. Then the latest release in a battle report. Then how to paint it. Then how to convert it.
If all the 'content' could be related to DIFFERENT armies, I think it would be a much better mag.
One other huge peeve i have is that only studio armies are used in battle reports. Whilst this generally is OK for 40k (they have MUCH bigger studio armies, oossibly 3 or more studio armies of each race) it is horrible for the fantasy armies (where they have one of each unit painted). I remember a BR between High Elves and Goblins back at the tail end of WHFB 6th ed. The goblin army was a player's own army, and as such was built realistically - like someone who wanted to win a tournie. The HE player took one of each unit type from the studio, when every real HE player was running all heavy cav. So i'd like to see more PLAYER armies and less STUDIO armies.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |
