Howdy doodee.

I'm looking at creating a big arsed Bastion for my games club, which can be used as an objective in Apocalypse, and as two in Planetstrike etc.

The plan involves a rather worrying 7 Bastion kits, as it's going to be 3 sections wide, 2 sections high (plus the base section of course) with a complete Bastion plonked on top. Now this is relatively straightforward, but I do have serious concerns about the structural integrity of the beast.

Had no problems so far, but I'm worried it might flex. Options open to me are of course slicing up the sprue itself to reinforce the wall sections and the floor for the top Bastion to sit on.

Do you think it would require further spars inside to connect opposite walls to each other? Again I reckon Sprue is my friend, as it's free, easy to work with and the same material. Way I see it, cutting it to length will be the biggest trick there!

So, suggestions please on how I might ensure it's structural integrity.

And now for the fun stuff. The central 'top' Bastion has a plan behind it. I want to end up with a variety of toppers for it, from a Defence Laser, to a Deathstrike Missile, and hopefully a massive communications array so it can be part of the Planets Psychic Choir. Suggestions on how to do these cheaply and effectively are most welcome!

I don't think you will need it for the walls they have pins that slot together but on the floor yepers. Don't forget to use those spacer bits that come in the box they fill in the pin areas between the added plates.
Would have been nice of gw to put in a pic of how to do this in the instructions but nooooo just a blurb about them being extra bits.

Indeedy. I just glued them on the underside!

OVerall highly impressed with just how modular the kit is. Only real hacking I'll need to do with this plan is to modify the tops of the wall sections so it will all sit flush. No bother!

When I have dug up the requisite £126, I will provide pics.

Gonna do honour and kill pennants hanging from the upper level. I mean, how demoralising would it be for an invading army than to see the defences proudly proclaiming how many victims they have claimed before, without being conquered (you can tell they haven't been conquered, on account it's not rubble!).

Seriously enjoying these kits!

I've been asked to lend my local GW my Planetstrike terrain on Saturday, as they have a massive game planned, and could do with more.

As such, I am determined to get my mega-bastion bought and constructed by then, even if it means pootling about the country to get all seven.

All things being well and good, expect a 'how I doned it' thread Saturday night. Well. Actually. Better make that Sunday night. Most likely going out drinking on Saturday.

How about cutting up some wire coat hangers? That would do the trick.

Yarr, but not sure the Superblue would work. Sprue is freely available.

Oh, and I might be changing the design. Fancy having it with the corners as single height Bastions, resulting in the second (third depending on how you count it) floor being cross shaped. Just wish I could make up my mind!

I would absolutely reinforce any large elevated floor surface that you plan to hold figs/models, especially one as big as you describe, and especially if this is gonna be used in a store or public events. I'd use long plastic strips or sprue frame and plastic glue to make a grid/web/support structure underneath.

People are not going be amused if the thing caves in and leaves all the models in a pile of chipped and broken bits...

Peace of Mind is well worth the effort.

As for the kill banners: My ork fort has a sign out front that says " Zog Off!!!" that serves the same function(at least to the orks)

Might just make the nominal front have indented bastions on it, to give it a more interesting shape than 'square'. Also a lot less pissing around!

Woohoo! Ordered te various kits for this project today, and I hope to receive them end of this week.

I've ordered up 6 Bastions, and a single Shrine of the Aquila. Modified the design in my head slightly, as I intend to have the Shrine's frontage and the big windows to be part of the front.

Will be taking pics as I work on it and paint it. Also ordered something else for a special Apocalypse type project, which I shall codename 'Cerberus'....

For your Psychic Choir topper, you could do something like the following, since you'll have a lot of bastion kit bitz:
Get a spool for thread, or Michael's has wooden ones... or a waterbottle cap or soemthing that's about 3" high and wide enough to fit under one of the Bastion arrays [Steal a cap from an Expo Whiteboard cleaner spray bottle from work?] ) and glue it to the top of a spraypaint can cap.
Glue 3-5 comms towers around the spool, on top of the paint can (might be best to carve out the back of the 'base' of the comms unit, so it fits sort of flush). Glue another comms unit on top of the spool, so you have one that's elevated above the others. Use a different topper for it than the ones around the bottom.
The lower array might stick out a bit, you could cut toilet paper tubes down and bend them in place (would probably use hot glue to secure them as it dries quickly). Or dowel rods or PVC tubing, in which case it would be easier to cut holes in the cap for the cylinder to snug into than to cut the objects to fit snugly.

For the piece as a whole, really think hard about storage and transport. I made mine ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/251999.page ) modular because I don't have place to put anything where it wont' get stepped on, or destroyed by inquisitive toddlers
That also has the side benefit of using pieces of it in smaller games so it doesn't dominate the board.

For large floor sections... You could use Balsa or Masonite, cut to shape. I mention balsa first, because my bunker floor on the above piece is made from masonite, and it took me awhile to sand down the board to be thin enough to fit in the groove that the plastic floor piece goes in. Which of course was more anal that the process needed to be.

Dreaper: that's nice... reminds me of something in the Fallen Angels HH novel. Are those pillboxes on the front?

Storage is not really a problem for me, as the club has plenty of room for such things!

And thankyou for the suggestions about the Psychic Choir!

Right! Order arrived today, and construction is now well under way.

Rear wall of the Bastion is more or less complete. All glued together, just awaiting the Heavy Bolters.

Sadly, the front from the Shrine of the Aquila kit is too wide to be used, but I will be using the other 'whole' panels from the kit. Possibly. Not 100% sure yet.

Pics tomorrow, when I've bought some Batteries and fired up my prehistoric Digicam!
