Read the Horus Heresy books, that should prolly give you some insight. But I've only read the first one so they might paint him in a different light.

Agreed, he was a militant atheist. He appears in the HH books a couple of times, specifically Legion and Tales of Heresy. In Legion he's described as having some terrifying ambition. In Tales you get a glimpse of the man who created the Crusade to unite humanity and who hated religion. Automatically Appended Next Post: I forgot about Mechanicum, yes, we see him on Mars and what he can do and why some of the Adepts there regarded him as their Omnissiah.

IMO: His appearance in Mechanicum, which I was alluding to, makes me think he was not the militant atheist he seemed--rather clearing the field for his own theology about the divinity of mankind.

Perhaps he just treated the mechanicum differently because he needed them onside. For all his antagonism towards religion he didn't seem to have any problem with the martian religion and he seems to have done nothing to improve knowledge of the sciences amongst the general populace of the imperium. He withheld potentially vital information about the nature of the warp and simply demanded obedience.

Well if everyone knew about the warp and showed it then there wouldnt be many Humans left, in Mechanicum someone saw the vastness of the Galaxy and how insiginfance there where and killed themselves, imagine what it would do to humanity to know there are terrible deamons on the edge of the world ready to break through and devour them.
He didnt know that much himself.

I think the Emperor was (as I have already expressed) awesome. But in all seriousness, I think the Chaplians (Space Marine) description of him is pretty acurrate.
Not a god. A great man, a man who could unite humanity and lead them to their destiny amosgt the distant stars, a man whose like shall never be seen again, but still a man.

Only through sacrifice. HEY! Guess who else is cool through thier sacrifice? That's right...Sanguinius. lol
Humanity, in the wake of those dark days, NEEDED some or something to draw strength from. The Emprah was an obvious choice. Perhaps the Emperor had intended a more BROAD worship of mankinds divinity and destiny, rather than being the centre of attention.

Agree 100%. This is at least the fourth time I've posted how I'd like nothing more than to see a Russ/Sanguinius tag team all over Chaos.

Fighting words, Xav, fighting words. Come the Wolftime, when Russ comes back with the Empra, don't be surprised to see Sanguinius somehow with them. Then even Mork and Gork will shudder in their calloused green hides.

If a moment comes where the Emprah is re-incarnated, and Russ returns with a Revived Sanguinius (doubt last part), then not only will Mork and Gork be shuddering, they'll be crapping gretchin out in thier healthy fear of that awesome TAG TEAM!!!!

Lol, well in the Deamon hunters book called "Hammer of Daemons" the grey knight has some weird vision where there are all the imperial forces one side all primarchs, emporer and dead space marines etc.
The other side is all powers of chaos, all chaos deamons, and deamon princes and stuff and traitors, maybe thats what russ was refereing to.

Re-thinking it, perhaps his ultimate goals were more altruistic. I am skeptical though of how the mechanicum was given pretty much free reign over how technology developed. Technology was allowed to be bound up in the chains of religion with no thought to teaching the principles behind the tech so that it could be advanced properly and be better maintained. The Mechanicum book mentions what an offence it is to tamper with machines, which shows how initiative in regards to working with machines is abhorred by the Imperium from the start. Maybe it was a convenient way to prevent another AI war from happening and things would have improved once the Imperium stabilised, we'll never know. Likewise we'll never know how much the Emperor knew about the threat of chaos before it arrived, obviously he knew enough to quit the crusade and return to Earth to fortify it. I have to wonder if he'd been more open about his concerns whether the heresy would have become the mammoth that it did.

The Emporer was the only man to lead the snivelling warring factions of humanity into his light and any semblance of unity, To bring all men into the fold of 1 great Imperium was an awesome undertaking. The Emporer i think knew of chaos but chose to ignore it's taint until he had the majority of planets under control but never thought his most chosen "son" would ever turn which destoryed the plans for a harmonius human race, without heresy or xenos involved obviosly

It's quite ironic that repetively, the greatest threat to 40k races are themselves.
Humans : Horus Heresy
Eldar : The Fall
Orks : Other Orks
Necrons : C'tan (apparently they were tricked into a civil war)

Maybe just maybe GW is trying to help us understand that our biggest threat is ourselves! perhaps Examples may be Global warming and pollution (if you believe in global warming) and wars

Don't you get it? Gork and Mork are the most powerful known Warp entities because there are literally septillions of Orks who all believe in them. For crying out loud, these guys mugged Khorne and push around the other gods for laughs.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

The fluff says when Gork and Mork awoke the Emporer and chaos gods trembled at there power. At the emporer could take on the chaos gods, so no way can he stand Gork and Mork. Russ and his edited by modquisiton fellow have no pyshic powers therefore cannot fight Gork and Mork. Modquisition: gentlemen, language please.
