A group of us got together today to play a quick apocalypse game. Three players per side, 3333 points each, means 10k per side, with a 12x6 table. We cleared all the furniture out of my living room and used some banquet tables to set it up.

Allied for the battle were the forces of Khorne and Tzeentch, led by Ken, my wife Kathleen, and myself, against the Emperor's Finest, led by SparkeyG, Chris and Art.

It's Apocalypse - there are more pictures than descriptions really, hopefully you''ll enjoy...

Ken's Khorne Marines

Kathleen's Khorne Daemons

My Tzeentch Daemons

SparkeyG's 3rd Company of Ultramarines

Art's Mortifactors and Sisters of Battle

Chris's Space Wolves

The table, predeployment

With only one army to actually deploy, the forces of Chaos took the field first, lining the deployment edge with berserkers.

The marines deploy up on the line, ready to counter-fire.

With Art supplying a newly painted Temple of Skulls, we decided that the reason for this battle was that the imperial scouts had discovered this temple and the marines were moving in to shut it down, when the chaos gods decided that it needed to be defended. As such, the Temple of Skulls was worth two objectives. The other objectives were the imperial shrine and a building way off in the corner, as well as the Space Wolves chaplain (or, at least, where he had been standing), and a building in the imperial deployment zone.

Turn one was largely about getting daemons onto the table, ready for turn two. Icons on the berserker squads made this easier. Notably, the tzeentch herald had a mission to accomplish and deep struck deep into the imperial backfield, while the flamers pretty much missed any sort of useful landing position. Shooting was largely inconsequential, but chaos's plans were set in motion.

On the Imperial turn, Tzeentch's master plan was revealed. The Tzeentch herald took over the baneblade's firing for the turn, wiping out almost all of the bloodclaws, as well as destroying a predator and a dreadnought. Khorne's rage overtook the Ultramarines too, who ran forwards to engage the bloodcrushers, rather than shooting them. In spite of this, the Marines called down an orbital barrage, killing half the bloodcrushers before the fight started. Other imperial shooting killed a few daemons and berserkers.

The sign of the Aquilla, last hope for doomed men.

Battle is joined whole-heartedly as the second turn begins. (And the pizza arrives) Notably, this turn sees Kharn and An'ggarath jointly charge the Space Wolf Rune Priest, whose got some crazy strategem that makes him S10, A10. Sounds like a fun little tussle, And then Kharn, decides not to let anyone else play and wipes out the priest and his retinue before anyone else gets a chance to swing.

Kharn victorious!!!

Imperial reinforcements arrive in the bottom of the second.

Turn 3:

Chaos lands scoring units near the objectives.

And so do the Ultramarines, ready to stomp out chaos wherever they find it.

At the end of four turns, game is called. Chaos holds two objectives, plus the Temple of Skulls, for a total of four points. The marines hold one building, but lost their chapter relic, for a total of 0. The Imperial forces had just lost their Baneblade, but revealed their final strategem to bring it back onto the board, but it's not enough to turn the tide, and after gaming for eight hours, it was time to wrap it up.

We initially rolled an even more uneven table division (using the method in the apoc book). Deploying first, we (chaos) knew that almost our entire army was short-ranged and that we needed to make sure that the imperials couldn't just hang back out of range, so we took the bigger deployment area and left most of it unused, except for the defilers playing safety. It left that big table space largely unused, but the alternative was to be shot apart.

I knew it was going to be a good read after the line
"A group of us got together today to play a quick apocalypse game."

Very nice even I would have loved to just sporadically set up a 3k army of swarm orks way over there on that unused section and run em in to attack both sides XD

Maybe I'm clueless, but where does that chaos temple come from? I've seen it in multiple battle reports now. Plus, that FW an'ggrath (I'm assuming that is what it was) was incredible to witness on the table.

Also hilarious that kharn + an'ggrath charged the chaplain and kharn wiped it out before an'ggrath got a chance to do anything . Blood for the blood god =D (crap, I'm a nurgle fan, I'll probably get herpes now for being disloyal).

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

The temple is the 'Temple of Skulls' - It's a very big platic terrain piece made by GW. I added the Icons from the Chaos accessory sprue to devote one of each pillars to each of the chaos gods, before my friend Art took it and painted it up for the game.

Looks great.

And the lack of titans and minimal use of Superheavies means that every model on the board was relevant instead of just background for the big fellas.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.
