I must reapprise my earlier estimation. I like this show, alot. SWMBO has determined its because its post war Confederates in the Old West IN SPACE!!!
I particularly like Jaynestown so far. The duel on the planet was basically a New orleans duel. I'm surprised Mal didn't pull out a "Malcolm" knife and then run off to the moon Tejica to lead an uprising against a newly installed oppressive dictator...
The only downside I see is that in nearly every episode someone gets shot. Jeez you're not going to have a crew by episode 9.

Sounds like a Hank Williams Jr/Waylon Jennings song actually.

It's a pity it got canceled so quickly. The concept is sound (space western of sorts) and the writing was pretty entertaining (though I understand the complaints some people have with Joss Whedon's writing).
"Out of Gas" and "Ariel" are probably my two favorite episodes.
If you listen to the commentary, on one of the episodes, one of the producers makes a comment, 'I knew that the network executives were going to kill the show. When you explained it to them, I could tell that they just weren't smart enough to get the concept.'
I dig out the DVDs every few years and watch the series. I enjoy the series much more than the movie, which had a darker tone (if I want grimdark, I read 40k).

Whilst roleplaying in EQ2, someone once commented that my character was verymuch like Adelai Niska, I had never seen Firefly at the time and watched it some time later, wow, what a compliment, he is now one of my all time screen villains, love his turn of speaking and mannerisms.
Brilliant. Loved the series and all it's characters were developed and had interesting twists and turns. I cannot fathom why it was killed in it's infancy or why, with the online support I read for it, it was never simply reinstated. I also wonder at the logic of killing several characters in the movie, since it would make bringing it back so much more difficult.
RIP Firefly, may you rest peacefully with Farscape and Babylon5, victims of 'executives' with no soul.
Will report where I'm at after this weekend. Genghis Connie returns and has planned out a full weekend of invasions, razing cities, piles of skulls, all the usual fun stuff.
GC's back! GC's back! GC's back!
(oh and I need to see if The Boy is officially as tall as me at this point).

Firefly is IMO the best science fiction show that has been shown on television to date. Used to be Bab 5 (still love that show though), but Firefly has that something extra. I also think some of the magic comes from the fact it was never finished. "The candle that burns twice as bright" and all that.
If you're loving it so far you'll really enjoy the episodes 'War Stories' (also commentary on that episode is brilliant - Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk) and 'The Message'. 'The Message' is a particularly poigniont episode as although it is not the last in the season it was the last episode they filmed. When you watch it with this knowledge you can see the little lines of dialogue which reflect the cast and writers knew it was over. It's also a damn good episode irrispective of this, especially Jayne's bobble hat.
Think my fav episode overall is the one where Mal ends up in the duel after defending Denara's honour. Think its called 'Shindig'.

The series has more "heart" ,more character developement, and a much broader running plot line.
The movie is a flashy condensed version for non FF fans.
Series is better
