Well, I used to collect nids, and they were fun but I always admired the orks crazyness. So now after 2 years of not doing any modelling I'm back to warhammer 40k

So I ordered loadsa new models (the newer orks bikes and trukks look so much better than the old ones yay!) and paints and received some (not all *grumbles*) of it yesterday.

What I ordered:
A warboss
2 loota/burna squads
A battleforce
Some grots (received)
AOBR dreadnought (received)
A sprue from the trukk
Various paints and one of the new GW saws (received and damn the saw is awesome)

IGNORE ALL THAT, GOT EVERYTHING NOW

What I'll (hopefully/eventually) be making with all this:
A big mek with burna AND kustom mega-blasta, ammo grot, 'eavy armor and bosspole
Burna squad (8 burnas 3 mekboys, to accompany the big mek)
Deff Dread (not sure about its weapons yet, thinking 2 skorchas would be best but i wont have enough bits for that)
Warbuggy with skorcha (might be fun converting them bikes ^^)
Some Boyz.

Actually I need help deciding what to do with the boyz.. I have 12 here on my desk with choppas and I'm getting another 20 from the battleforce. I might convert the ones i have here to 'Ard boyz and give them a trukk and a nob with a powerklaw. With the rest I'm liking the idea of having a squad of 20 with shootas and 2 big shootas.. but most of the people I'd play against have so many guns that that may mean certain failure at any games i play (not that I'm really making this army to play games with anyway.)

I painted a grot. It was mainly just for seeing if i could still hold a paintbrush (having not been near one for around 2 years) so its a bit messy as i was lazy, and it looks better in real life of course
Also, I mixed a quarter(ish) of a pot of goblin green with a quarter(ish) of dark angels green to make a 1:1(ish) pot of paint to help me paint the orks more 'ooniformly. I might make another pot of lighter-than-goblin green for drybrushing the skin with, but I'm not sure if i should mix goblin green with white or bleached bone of something else. Suggestions?

C&C (and suggestions please!) welcome (unless its telling me to use less brackets, sorry )

Well, that's a really nice start! Nothing I can criticise there!

I look forward to seeing the rest of the project!

Cheers,

Thanks darkkt and Blightdron

I painted another ork, and just before i had finished.. a box arrived! There's just something fun about getting a big box'a models in the post.

(Not the best i know, again it was mostly testing out a basing method and my green mix, and taking up time before i got the new models. Speaking of green paint.. read my first post and suggest a lighter-than-goblin-green-mix? kthx )

Since then I've been busy.. producing is probably the best word, bits for my (very) big mek!

If you want close-ups of the mek backpack then check my gallery. I'm gonna do some close ups of the grot after ive made his backpack and based him.

Yes the gun in the top right is Mahoosive, its the burna and kustom mega-blasta for the big mek

The grot in the bottom left is an ammo runt for the mek. Hes had his arm bent round by heating it slowly close to a very hot lamp that's been on all day. Behind his head is an "ammo cartridge" (chopped his hand off and switched it with the bigger end of the large stikkbomb hands. OK that doesn't quite make sense but its tricky to explain.

The bit to the left of the grot is for a backpack (or something similar) i will hopefully make for the 'lil guy. Was fiddly to cut up but i still think my new GW saw is greeaaat.

I removed the squig and chain from the hand in the bottom right so my mek will just point now. The idea being that he has to use his huge gun with both hands so he cant have a squig getting in the way.

What are the 2 chopped up loota guns for i hear you say? Well.. they're not for the big mek, but for something else reasonably big, GUESS!

Thanks for reading! (:

You could always take a look at the vallejo range for a lighter green. I got a fair few vallejo paints now and there are some fantastic colours that work well along with the GW paints as either shaders or highlights. Great if you suck at mixing large amounts of paint (like me - never get the amount right and before long I run out and can never get the colour right again)

Nice looking start there and the (very) big mek parts are intriguing.

Thanks everyone humm I'd like to look at paints in real life before buying them, and I'm not sure I'll be seeing any vallejo paints around soon :/ thanks for the suggestion though.

Right.. PROGRESS!

The big meks gun im pretty sure is done now, unless anyone can think up some amazing suggestion to make it 5 times more awesome and even more shooty lookin'

Some close ups:

The deff dread is also taking shape. Hehe it looks like its smiling, kinda.

to make the shooter more awesome? add one of those marine scopes onto the top and then on the side put some guitar wiring, linking bits to other bits

I had thought about that. And in fact i tried a space marine scope and the scope from the ork boyz sprue. Unfortunately the 2 spikes on top of the gun completely get in the way of anyone looking down the scope so it looks a bit silly :/ Also the big mek has a Ballistic skill of 2 and the burna and kustom mega-blasta both have short ranges, so it made sense to me not to give him a gun with lots of clever targeting know-wots.

Might put a couple more wires on it though

I'm starting the skorchabuggybike now as well. Yay trying to make several things at once and not getting too confused :/

My desk is covered in bits.

Small update, I put the Big Mek together! Although i need some suggestions as to what to put on his base as there's a huge gap in front of him :/ might put the ammo runt there but its a bit too tall/getty-in-the-way-ish i think.

Also, I think the deff dread weapons are finished. Eugh green stuff is fiddly. (oh and the shiny glue bits aren't as bad as they look, i promise )

Those look sweet!

As to the base... maybe a bit of epoxy putty to make a hill-ish type thing? maybe a space marine helm or shoulder pad. Could even put a big rock or rubble.

Hmmm... Me likey!!! Just to note though, I might give the mec some sorta bionic eye piece, sorta seems to suit his character. Just my 2 cents worth.

Keep up the good work!

Hmm lighter than gob green... mixing it with a white will make it more pastel, mixing with a bright yellow might make it brighter (but I question whether it would be light enough).

I look forward to seeing more of your efforts!

Hummm... still can't get a selection of rubble/severed limbs on the big meks base which looks good, but thanks for the suggestions, i'll keep working on it

I don't think I'm gonna bother mixing up a lighter than goblin green paint anymore.. well not until Ive painted some boys and seen if they all need it. Thanks for suggesting yellow though, i didn't think of that for some reason ^^

TIME FOR AN UPDATE!

The middle section of the deff dread is coming along nicely although I still don't think it looks quite orky enough..

Aaand i made my 'ard boy nob. I took his legs from the biker sprue.. So he didnt have a bottom. But its ok, i made him one out of green stuff

Also i think I'm coming down with the "mould line madness" i swear ive spent at least 2 hours simply scraping off those 'lil lines.. and there's always more! Soon I'm gonna become scared of ice cream cones because I'll think to myself "I'm going to have to scrape off those lines before i eat it, aren't i"

AHH WELL, still having fun ^^

'Ard boy nob=win.

THIS THREAD= WIN!

I think you should rip the mek off his base, put some industrial rubble on it, and stick him back on!

Cheers,

Jack.

He's right, the mek just looks tiny with his massive gun.
Adding some rubble to his base will make him look bigger.

About the dread, it really reminds me of this:

(It's giacome from the PC game Rise of Legends.)
Well, that's a good thing. Keep it up!

Really nice so far, I would strongly advise you to get a pin vice and drill out your gun barrels though, it looks so much better once done.

It seems to me that you already have a really good three colour stage for you Ork skin that works well. There's a nice dark tone, mid tone and high light. If you're absolutely sure that you want to take it another step I'd recommend Rotting Flesh. You could even get Thraka Green in there to blend everything nicely too.

Thanks for the awfully positive comment Blightdron ^^ Well... about the big meks base.. He would be too tall with anything under his feet, as he already towers over his ork buddies slightly almost too much for a big mek (mainly cos he's converted from a warboss) so I didn't do that. I chopped up some of one of the old ruined building 40k kits and stuck that on his base along with some modelling gravel stuff, I think it looks pretty good (pics will be coming once I've painted him a bit)

Really nice so far, I would strongly advise you to get a pin vice and drill out your gun barrels

Thanks and.. i do have one! But I've lost it >.< for some gun barrels (the ones on the deff dread and now on the 'ard boy nob) I've just been using a particularly pointy scalpely type knife to make the impression of drilling the barrels out (it goes in about 2mm deep, just look at the pictures because I've explained it incredibly badly)

Hehe sonofruss, i wrecked my old GW saw, and all the spare blades by cutting metal - it was the one with the thin cutting bit and wooden handle :/ So far ive only lost 2 teeth on my newer saw ^^ sorry to here about yours!

Thanks for the suggestion oni. Next time I go to a model shop I'll be heading straight to the GW paints bit and be look for some rotting flesh. I love how some GW paints just sound so delightful ^^ Do you mean using thrakka green before or after dark angels green or just mixing it with things? I've never seen it in real life so don't know the exact colour :/

Enough talk, its pictures time!

There are a couple more pics of this in my gallery, have a look if your interested http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-17505-3556_Orks.html
I still need to decide on a base for it. I've got one of the old SM dreadnought scenic-ish bases which i could put it on, but I think that's a bit boring. I also think I need to make it look just a bit more orky.. suggestions?

YAY the skorchabuggy is coming along nicely Its a shame that heavy flamer (which is off a land speeder) is a bit small and un-orklike. Meh I'll paint it blue and say they had just nicked it (: As it's supposed to be a vehicle, I'll be adding more armour and doing various other things to it very soon.

I'm going to start painting the big mek and the 'ard boyz (see my pictures of them in my gallery if your nosey) soon. Unfortunately I'm a horrifically slow painter, so there might not be any interesting updates for a while. *sad face*
