I still prefer owning a disc. There's something worrisome about having to run a game through a program provided by a company who may not be around in a year's time.

If that worrisome company does go out of business that physical DVD won't mean you a damn thing. Steam validation is required to play the game even in offline mode! Your not missing anything not owning a physical copy of DOW2.

Also that worrisome company is probably the 2nd most successful PC gaming company of all time, and owns the best and most successful digital game distribution system.

I've actually had a copy of left 4 dead purchased over steam disappear from my purchase history and removed from my games list. Oddly enough I still had all the files on my computer too. It just didn't want to admit I was allowed to use them. I still have to email them about that.. It's been months.

Steam is far from perfect.

Only for the initial install. You can play it thereafter without an internet connection.

don't waste your money. Even without the problems with steam(to play offline, you still have to be connected to the internet, so forget playing on the train or while traveling without a wireless) the game itself is a poor interpretation of the 40 universe. The first DoW game captures the feel better. I'd sell yo mine, heck, I'd give it to you if I could, but with all the digital rights management crap, I couldn't. Buy DoW 1, all the expansions, and realize that that is the height of the 40k video game experience.

If you really want. I could go into more detail on how it is not as good as the first, but only if you ask.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I still play DoW 1 on a regular basis. I stoped playing DoW2 about halfway through, and haven't played it since.

And having to research Power Fists every time you move to a new base and building Baneblades on the fly is a good interpretation?

While that's subjective, you're missing the point. You need to ask yourself: Was the dynamics fun? If the answer is yes, then it's a good game. I loved the customization- it's got lots of replayability which is great news for my wallet, and it put a new take on the RTS field instead of the same thing again and again.

If I wanted a great interpretation of the of the 40k universe I'd play Ministorum: Red Tape. Play IG and try and get all the supplies/troops/etc when you need it! Battle endless departments in the Ministorum to stop having to collect spent lasgun clips for record keeping! Live the thrill of getting your rank stripped away for taking too long!

If you look at the new Space Marine game coming out, you could say, "That's impossible! You can't outfit a squad like that!". That statement is ultimately irrelevant, what matters: is it fun?

Hmmm.... -_- i already have complaints about the game

Units with both range and CC weapons seem to get confused rather easily, ends up not shooting or attacking
Carnifex takes forever to line up into CC , everything else seem to be running around it while it does nothing.
The " ! " feature needs more CoolDown , im sick of enemy units surviving 5 squads firing on it while it runs away.

The rest is sort of fun :x

While your Carni IS slow, it's also immune many weapons.

And yes, I too have played steam games (DOW2, L4D, etc) w/o internets. The only drawback is it doesn't "authenticate" your achievements with an online timestamp.

DOW 2 is an average game AT BEST.

The single player campaign gets an 8/10 from me. Customizable units, unique wargear, good campaign mode, unit experience are all great things about the single player game.

Sadly the multi-player has NONE of these things, and is really just plain un-fun 5/10. Extremely limited array of units, almost no customization and poor multi-player balance make the multi-player mode an un-fun experience.

Yeah, it's not a good translation of the tabletop game, but it is pretty well balanced. I've played out the campaign, and now just use the multi for the occasional comp-stomp to work out frustrations.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

This, of course, assumes that they were attempting to make a direct translation of the tabletop game.

Which they weren't.

I'm betting the box version has SecuRom or some other type of restrictive DRM. So you're essentially paying 50$ for a rental. Steam is the way to go IMO, if you don't have internet, get with the times!

I have it and it doesn't have anything besides steam... I hate steam, to be honest. Doesn't work on either my gaming laptop (from a year ago) or my gaming computer (recent). Even though I may not actually play too many games besides the ones on the 360, that is no excuse for steam not working. And their support hasn't a clue how to get anything to work besides the stupid FAQs and pre-posted articles...

I dunno, I cannot get into D0W2. Maybe it's just not how I think, but it just feels too much like cat&mouse rather than a strategy game - I preferred the original. I like the new graphics, but the gameplay is just lackluster.

As someone who has probably played a lot more of it than you have I think it's very balanced. Rippers are a bit over the top and it all rushes to tier 3 too quickly, but its hardly unbalanced. You just have to not suck. If you suck you are going to get beaten very badly. It's not a forgiving game online.

the game itself is a poor interpretation of the 40 universe. The first DoW game captures the feel better.

So thats how I lost over 1000 marines in a single online game once. Because it felt better. Thats why squads hop out of buildings after I pay for them. Thats why men just appear next to their friends repeatedly to replace casualties taken. Thats why vehicles get stuck after clipping into infantry units and have to be destroyed. Thats why the living saint is 30 feet tall.

It's good to know the first dawn of war game was a better representation of the universe.

but it just feels too much like cat&mouse rather than a strategy game - I preferred the original.

The first game was hardly strategic. It was basically "build your big army" which then led to "win or lose due to rock paper scissors faction balance in the big army fight". There was some early game strategy in map control and economic control, but not much.
