DoW 2 has AI problems that were not present in the first one. In DoW1 you could chose the attack stance (hold position, attack, attack buildings, cease fire ect) and attack type (ranged, close combat). The inability to select these things left my squads doing nothing much of the game requiring micro management. Too often my assault squad (if you can call 4 dude a squad, where was the 5th guy?!?) just stood still getting shot, and my devastators and tactical squads would just stand around not doing anything at all with enemies in sight but not it weapon range, they wouldn't move to engage. Also, manytimes they would move to THE WRONG SIDE OF WALLS! Cover only works when it's BETWEEN you and the enemy, not behind you.

I also felt that the game did not get any harder (tactically challenging) as I progressed, and that it simply devolved into a treasure hunt for the best wargear a la Diablo II. It was when I made that realization (that I was playing space diablo) that I stopped playing.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If DoW 2 is a better representation of the universe, then I must have the wrong Codex Space Marines. All my tactical squads must have atleast 5 members, same for my assault and devastator squads. Why does my dev seargent have a heavy weapon. Why can I not change the heavy weapon of the entire squad.

And if the first game wasn't strategic, the second game was more more so. Build up your forces, destroy the enemy unit production facilities, mop up any resistance.

God forbid the game doesn't play itself for you. If they are close enough on the mellee stance they will engage, but thats usually about 3 meters in game. They aren't programmed to just blindly charge when a bullet bounces off of them unless you set them in an attack move stance. That would be stupid because people would just take a sniper shot then lure your squad into 5 heavy bolters.

Honestly though you are controlling like 6 squads at any time in the multiplayer and 4 maximum in the single player. How hard is it to control the movement of 4 units. Seriously.

Also, manytimes they would move to THE WRONG SIDE OF WALLS! Cover only works when it's BETWEEN you and the enemy, not behind you.

Thats probably because you told them to do so. The isometric camera angles can make it difficult to get to the top side of certain terrain pieces for cover without spacing your mouse away a bit. The AI doesn't move to the wrong side of terrain alone as they are scripted to move to places that give them cover bonuses.

I also felt that the game did not get any harder (tactically challenging) as I progressed, and that it simply devolved into a treasure hunt for the best wargear a la Diablo II. It was when I made that realization (that I was playing space diablo) that I stopped playing.

Yes, because it got harder in dawn of war one, where halfway through the game your honor guard units following around your commander could beat every enemy force in the first 3 minutes of the game in every single mission other than the enemy HQ zones. Even then they could usually win the first half of those missions for you alone.

If DoW 2 is a better representation of the universe, then I must have the wrong Codex Space Marines. All my tactical squads must have atleast 5 members, same for my assault and devastator squads.

Yeah. Its also weird that you can't fit 30 orks into a single wartruk, and 20 sisters into a rhino. It's bizzare that the space marines in dawn of war two aren't 12 feet tall compared to the guardsman models like they are in one.

Strangest of all you don't land 50 buildings in a space marine assault in dawn of war 2. I remember that happening in all of the fluff.

I enjoy the gameplay of DoW 2, as it's much akin to Company of Heroes (Which is still my favorite title from Relic). I enjoy games in this style as they're much more tactical (Though when you have Orbital Bombardments, tactics are sort of a moot point ) I didn't like the lack of content in the game however. It felt far too small in terms of overall unit types, and I really would've enjoyed playing even just a couple missions with more of a DoW 1 style. Nothing like an angry mob of Space Marines to make your opponents deuce their shorts.

That's a lesson to anyone that hasn't heard of the mob yet. Mass produced angry mobs of infantry destroy all (Not to mention they're extremely comical to watch!) If you're ever playing an RTS with no pop cap, Angry mob is the way to go.

Oh no I didn't mean Angry Mob in that sense. God that game was horrible. I was just talking about no-pop cap infantry spam in general. There's just something satisfying about producing infantry until such a point that your framerate completely dies

Agreed. This is on the same level of, "The book was different than that movie!" complaints.

Different mediums will, and NEED TO, present different experiences.

About to eat your Avatar...

I am looking forward to the games that they develop from what they learn from DOW2.

Overall it is fun, but meh. Pretty much sums it up for me, I have yet to really want to play it. I just get bored after a while, mainly because most games are simply about rush and grab.

I stopped playing computer games recently because they just don't interest me anymore. Too much clicky-click not enough action.

The main issue I have is the strange selection of units they have for the Eldar... so many platforms it is ridiculous.

The single player campaign gets an 8/10 from me. Customizable units, unique wargear, good campaign mode, unit experience are all great things about the single player game.

Sadly the multi-player has NONE of these things, and is really just plain un-fun 5/10. Extremely limited array of units, almost no customization and poor multi-player balance make the multi-player mode an un-fun experience.

I enjoyed 3v3s a lot during the beta... I'm tempted to buy it now, but the SC2 beta shouldn't be more than a month away and I have a spot sooooooooooooooooooo, doesn't seem worth it.

About Steam, I think they've said that if they were to ever go out of business they'd remove the need to connect via steam to play any games you've purchased through them?

Chances of Steam going out of business any time soon are very, very slim. Valve is one of the hottest devs out there at the moment with their high quality spit shine games and whatnots.

So, who bought DoW 2 and got a promo / item code with the game? I got the Sternguard armour set with the armour, custom bolter, master-crafted grenades and the Minotaur chapter decals.

I hate steam.. It is worthless.

DowII is okay.. but in campaign I dont wanna be movie marines.. I wanna play Chaos or eldar..

Also multiplayer you gotta be a chipmunk on speed to win.. click click click click... An FPS feels sedate compared to how fast I need to do stuff in Dow 2.

They can only ride on Portal's coat-tails for so long. Eventually they're going to have to actually make another game. The Half-Life 2 episodes may be fantastic, but they've missed the point of episodic content. You shouldn't be waiting 2 years between installments.

Valve is built on more than just Portal. Besides, the fact that they are also selling those great titles of other companies through Steam shows that they're still a long way away from closing their doors. Unlike say, Stardock, which offers a very limited and very niche range of games.

About two years. Cut them some slack, they've had their hands full with Left 4 Dead and the sequel.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

If I had to use a digital distribution system then Steam would be the one I would trust. Besides, as stated before, Steam is required whether you buy the box or not.

You can not play the game without an Internet connection unfortunately.

If you are among those who want to support your fellow developers as an incentive to improve and innovate their products for the future then I would imagine $25 is not too much to as for a rock solid game. Heck, even if you think it is mediocre it is still not a lot to ask.

Seeing a movie and getting popcorn almost costs that much.

Also, Left 4 Dead 2 isn't a sequel, it's pretty much all the bonus content that was promised for the first game that's being sold as a "sequel" to get more of your money.

How hard is it to control the movement of 4 units. Seriously.

I hate to say this seeing as I'm a big fan of the franchise but I'd rather wait and let them do it prim and proper than having them release a product that isn't worthy of being from Valve.

I used to hate steam and then had to reinstall after a format. Install steam and hit install for all my games. Went to work, came home and they were all installed.

You can also burn the media to disk too.

Valve has done something great with steam. Now if you want to complain about something, complain about Games For Windows as being a buggy POS overlay.

Someone has to explain to me why nobody has managed to present an online gaming platform that beats the original Battle.net... come on, it's 2009 and Games For Windows Live doesn't have a chat lobby? That was so annoying during the Beta of DoW2.

Watch from 9 minutes to uh whenever:

Or just watch the entire game as it's good. THAT'S speed About 350 actions per minute to be more precise.

Search your Steam Folder and your My Documents folder.

Do you know what format they're being saved in? If so, do a search for any file ending in that format. So, for example, if they're JPEGs, use Window's Find to look for *.jpg. If they're BMP (stands for Big Mechanised Pelicans), do a search for *.bmp.

That should find them.
