Hey everyone,

I'm trying to get my hands on a Vanguard Veteran Squad; which I'd like to arm mostly with power swords and lightning claws...

But I notice that the only miniatures on GW's site are all plastic (and thus armed in a set way, and buying them seperately looks to be a ripoff)..

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can put together my own custom veteran squad?

Could I get away with buying a combat squad and just gearing them up with some bitz?

My biggest problem is the fact that I want them to be carried into battle in a Rhino/Razorback to cut down on points: Thus I don't want jump packs... so most of the metal figures are out of the question!

Any solutions/help would be very much appreciated

*EDIT*

Also looking at the wargear choices; is the option 'Lightning Claw' referring to a pair of Lightning Claws for 15 points or just one?

If it's just one; could you replace the "free" bolt pistol with his lightning claw and keep a chainsword in his other hand?

Just one lighting claw for 15 points; and yes you could have LC and CS but it would be pointless as you only get the +1 attack by having two lightning claws. Besides a bolt pistol is a cc weapon.

You can assemble the squad using whatever bits you want; besides the two veteran packs are almost all Vanguard and they are metal. I have used parts from the terminator boxed set, assault box, command box, black templar and tactical box as well as a metal veteran as the sargeant.

i got an assault squad and with a bit of trickery made a vanguard squad, with jumpacks tho, i would suggest kustom building some of the weapons, like i did with lightning claw, you can try checking out my thread for ideas, i just used assault squad sprues and some bitz

Just a man, standing in front of a paint pot, trying to remeber if I rinsed boltgun metal in it.

Here's one of mine; the lighting claws look a little large but you get used to them

Made with a company Champion torso, lightning claws from the terminator kit, attached to chainsword arms from the assault marine kit.

EDIT: Pic changed to a painted version, need to re-think the glyphs I think

That's some nice work on a Marine with Lightening Claws. Usually people just slap Terminator arms on a Power Armoured Marine and it just looks tacky and lazy. Kudos!

If you're going to put a Vanguard squad in a Rhino, it might be an idea to put them with a Librarian with Force Dome. They'll need the extra survivability for the turn between dismounting and charging. Another idea is to take a Chaplain, to make them Fearless and use his Litanies of Battle to make the unit hit hardest.

Also, taking some regular schmoes with Chainswords and Bolt Pistols will give you some bodies to catch low AP shots on without wasting hitting power. A Veteran or two with a Power Fist might also spread the unit's threat and give you some diversity in modeling.

As for using plastic bits to make them look veteran-y, there's lots of sites out there where you can trade or buy specific armour bits to give them a unified and independent look.

Cheers I found the only problem was removing the conduits and putting them back without looking rubbish. I was tempted to use a lot of purity seals etc but I'm planning a fancy paint job instead.

Personally I will be using 5 twin lighting clawed vets with a chaplain and land raider to take out annoying enemy units sat in their deployment (Lootas etc). I expect them to be difficult to use though :( I always use a land raider anyway so that effectively costs me nothing, and I will be trying to use it to shield the vanguard from other enemy units so they don't get shot down after winning combats.
