I went against my better judgment and tried out GW's Purity Seal. Here are the results...

That's really bad. I've not touched the stuff in years but I have noticed that the Chaos Black spray in the new cans is just awful. Got cans from different stockists with the same chalky results. I think there's treachery afoot.

At first I would say you didn't mix/shake it properly or sprayed too thick(possibly from not initiating and ending your spray off of the model).

However after working with PS for a while I have found it has a bad tenancy to cause a mat effect by forming rather sizable surface features(roughness) to scatter rather than reflect. This is really really bad for larger models as it means they attract and keep dust like nothing else.

Im currently experimenting with other sprays. Any advice would be useful for gloss, matt and something in between(preferably something that can be painted on top of)

Ouch. I've never had a problem with Dullcote though, but I've got some Tamiya stuff at the moment which is good too.

Oddly enough, I've never had an issue with GW primer, on the odd occasions I've bought it.

Really? I think the new Chaos Black spray is better than ever.

It's definitely not an issue of shaking the can. I shook it for a good six minutes. I even timed myself. It could be that it went on too thick, but I'm not entirely convinced that's the case. You make a good point on initiating and ending the spray off of the model. I never took that into consideration.

I've not had this problem with the Spray Cans before, but is this the Matte Varnish Spray?

I was thinking of buying more, but maybe not...

I've never used the GW finisher before but IMO their spray primers stink. The white is much worse than the black in my experience. I do like GWs brush on paint line and really love the foundation paint line, but I'll never use their primers.

I use Humbrol's Hobby Spray Matt Varnish on my creations. It's about £3 a can here. It does lie as it is actually a semi-satin finish but it's better than a gloss.

It happend to me yesterday , my case was 100% confirmed because i coated during rain ( not that the rain touched the mini , just the humidity was enough to ruin it )

But one quick respray on a sunny day now , all fixed!

I use either normal spray paint and I have heard auto primer is good aswell and for varnish I just picked some up at the local hardware store.Bought some white primer and a gloss varnish(picked up the wrong one).Apart from being rather alot cheaper then GW's stuff it seems to work well.Anyway sorry to hear about it happening to you.

Auto primer is horrible for miniature modeling. It expands as it dries, it takes only one small mistake to ruin the detail on a figure.

This is what I recommend for priming:
http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/
Its made for rifles and deer stands so it adhears to plastic, wood, resin, and metal like glue.

I did this whole model with just the camo paint (minus weathering):

It doesn't matter how much you get on the model (don't over do it) it will contract to a smooth finish. I had a friend tell me that he coated his tanks in GW primer and I knew what they would look like before I even looked at them. I had him recoat everything with the Krylon camo colors and it fixed most of the mess.

I've thankfully never had an issue with GW's Chaos Black primer. I've used Krylon's and it is also good.

funny, I've used auto primer (duricoat I think it is called) with wonderful results. Absolutely zero detail degredation or paint expanding. Actually just did my Valk and half a dozen Chimera chassis in it with great results.

I've never once had an issue with GW sprays (and I've sprayed a LOT of models with them - I worked as a Redshirt and we were the only people allowed to spray models in the store; so we sprayed a LOT of models with a LOT of people's spray cans!) but I have heard loads of horror stories.

And, the thing is, these people who had horror stories were NOT (generally speaking) feckless idiots who didn't follow instructions. Sometimes, they did everything right and it just didn't work.

I was just lucky, I guess. I must admit, I have not tried many other products - but some of the ones I have tried give superior results. I will say; GWs stuff was always easy to use. It might not have given the best results, but it gave (to me at least) a consistent result with minimal expertise. That is something to recommend it to Little Johny Scaffer and his scaffy friends.

I've had the same frosted white effect using the Armory brand Clear Matte Sealer soon after it rained. I've never had any problem when the air is dry.

testors dull coat works wonders. No frosting what so ever no matter how many coats you put on it. I used the GW stuff before and got the same results, ruined 10 models. Try testors you wont be dissapointed, I was worried the first time I used it but I trusted the pro painters who told me it wouldnt frost up. I dont know why GW has never fixed their clear coats but its common knowledge that its just junk, sorry you nhad to find out this way.
