This is a ship that I made for an event that my local gw store has come up with. I made it WoC (cause apparently daemons dont do the ship thing... pshhh). Made structure outa foam board then put plasticard over it. Random bits and gs everywhere. Ship was also made so to allign with the nurgle ship that had a thread here a while back http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/250352.page. Any suggestions for it before I start painting? Also Need a cool name for the ship. Mhmmm

This ship has the same flaws as the last, ships dont actually look like that. I mean when have you ever seen a rectangular ship?
although the general construction and GSing of this ship is infintately superior to the other one...

Gotta agree with corpse on this one. I think it looks more like what a person who's never seen a ship thinks a ship looks like...if that made any sense. Your GS work looks good though.

Besides, surely khorne would favour metal vessels?

Just like the other ship, it looks too high in the water for the width of the ship.

This IS the painting and modelling forum, wherein we critique each other's work, right?

The whole POINT in painting and modelling is realism...
why do you think we highlight?
why do you think we shade?
why do you think we spend several hours on a single mini, getting it right?

Because WE on the painting and modelling section of Dakka want our toy soldier to be REALISTIC and BADASS.
if you dont agree GTFO of this forum.

Hmmmm I think both ships look fine (even though I made one) They might not be the best, but using limited resorces and money, you cant expect it to look 100% like a ship. I imagine orc ships being a floating rock? That isnt ship like but they pull it off. Most of the other ships arent exactly 100 ship like either. We have no pink/blue foam because of where we live so making the shape of the ship is somewhat hard. If you have suggestions please share as I'm sure we would both greatly appriciate it. We already understand they look different (they were meant to) but please. If you have a better way of doing it... share!

If you care enough to make a 3rd ship, make it shorter and longer and look at pictures of viking longboats/etc if you're just going to have a single sail style ship. I think it looks ok enough to be used , but there are some simple improvements you could make to get it to look much better.

Alright, well what are a few of these suggestions and how can I go about doing them? (supplies and what not) Again as Buttler said there are numerous things that we cant buy here (pink/blue foam being the biggest as thats what red shirts used for their structure and their still not perfect)

My suggestion is to cut the height by half and add some length. Think more along the longship designs than the carrack/galleon you are trying to make after all khorne guys are like vikings.

Did you read my post? Make it longer, make it shorter, and look at pics of viking longboats if you want to go with a one-sailed ship instead of multi-sails. I'm curious to know why you can't buy foam there. Is it that you can't buy it or you can't find it? There is always the internet. If you can't buy foam I'm assuming you can't get plasticard? You might think about clay if you can't get either one of those two materials. Clay lets you carve board structures into it and fire it only when you are happy with the sculpt. Until then you can keep the clay in a airtight container with a damp cloth to keep it from hardening.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

My very rapid (and quite poor) attempt at a boat inspired from the other thread was inspired from the old ships like the Cutty Sark (very curvy).

It was a cardboard inner skeleton, with single piece cardboard sides.

The inner skeleton had 3 main pieces, the back plate of the ship, including the cabin's rear wall, a middle section including the front wall of the cabin, and a front section which was at the point where the front of the ship stars to curve into the prow.

Then a sheet of thinner card was wrapped around the 3 skeleton sections which gave the ship it's shape and cut to fit and taped on (I was not going for beauty here, just seeing if it could be done).

I was then planning on using strips of card for planking, overlapping them much like shuttering on some American houses to give the effect of ship timbers.

If I had bothered to measure anything before hand, I think it would have been a reasonable attempt.

As has been said above, I think these boats suffer from a lack of essential boat like qualities.

Pick an image of a ship you want to have, then attempt to build it. I like the old wooden British Merhantman ships, so I attempted to build one.

In so far as most gaming boats of this type that I have seen (which is limited), the two boats presented here are fairly representative of what exists.

It actually reminds me of a taxiboat from my hometown, it's kinda known for beeing one of the ugliest boats around.

Your ship is to high and rectangular and it looks as if it's made out of bricks.

And since it's a khorne-ship i would make the bow plow-shaped and fit a ram on to it.

Always outnumbered, never outgunned.

Hmmmm, there seems to be alot of people that want the ship longer. Im sure this goes for both mine and mongers boats.... I totally agree and I know monger does too. The one problem is, for the boat battles we made these for. Theres limits. Different size boats = Different boats. We cant just extend the boats like everyone suggests. One of the reasons the ships are so tall (this is for mine at least) is that it is supposed to be holding a certain number of crew. With Mongers boat, his boat technically holds 30 crew. Mine holds 45 (mine can also be no longer at all) I guess one of the other reasons is, it just gives you a chance to be unique. Its a game of Fantasy Battles. IMO it doesnt have to be as real as everyone things... again just my opinion. But Ive never once seen an orc running around. Or a giant zzap gun then runs around melting stuff and occasionaly making rifts in the universe. Just my opinion. Keep tips comming please though. I cant do anything with my ship (its at my GW) but Im sure Monger would love them \

*The reason we cant get foam is apparently CA earthquake standereds say Pink/Blue insulation foam is not worthy or somthing so people are not supposed to sell it. We can get plasticard and stuff though.

Next time the red shirts make an order ask if you could get them to order an extra sheet for you guys.
It should keep you in boats for a while.

Thanks for the comments!

This ship is already done, the way I built it kind of made it so I couldn't make it any lower (if I did lower it it would ruin the first attempt). The front of it I'm going to try to GS some skulls & daemonic faces. Painting wise I'm not sure how painting the hull like metal will work or if I should just stick with wood and call it a day.

But, your suggestions will not have gone in vain. I'm planning on making a undivided ship with all of the suggestions above. EX- a viking style ship with more curve, not boxy, and LOWER to the ground, errrr water. Adding all of the expected chaos icons ect.. on it.

@ halsfeild- sorry bout that man, was having a very rushed day and looked over alot. Thanks for the ideas. Its not that its really hard to find but budget wise its expensive for me. Also I had never though of clay, expect to see it somewhere on the next ship!

You have to remember that a portion of the ship is supposed to be underwater, meaning that what you see above the water may only be about 1/2 - 2/3 of the ship, so there is plenty of room underneath for crew.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

You also need to do something about that mast and sail - that ship would have zero maneuverability, and would be ridiculously slow. Look up some pictures of tall ships, xebecs or even longboats and see what the canvas-to-hull ratio is. Move the mast to the centre of the ship and make the sail waaay bigger, and the mast thicker. Also cut the whole thing down to at least half it's current height.

A quick update. I took the risk and tried sawing off some of the bottom of the ship to make it lower, and it worked very well! All that is needed now is to experement with sail sizes and to add some gs work then its off to painting. I'll try to get pictures up ASAP.
