I've not heard any rumours but with GWs roling 4 year cycle I'd put money on a new edition being due

Heard nothing whatsoever. It's way to early, in my opinion.

The current one was released in 2006 so next year will be the usual four year update now. Thats why I'm trying to find out if anyone else has heard anything...

Isn't it a 5 year cycle?

This is the first time i've heard this rumour.I'd like to say they've still got half their army books to update to the current edition, but they don't seem to feel the need to update every army these days. They updated 40k into 5th without updating a number of codex books.

Still, if they gave it another year, they could get 5 more books out (counting the skaven this year, and assuming 3 next and 1 earlier in the year of the update.)

I kinda thought it was more of a "needs to be re-done" cycle

for 4 years, there were rumblings about what needed to be fixed in 40K, but the same can not really be said for Fantasy. The last release was superior to 6th edition, but 6th edition was fantastic, and 7th was like a polished version of 6th.

I suspect at least 2 years, if not 3 before a new Warhammer

It's certainly never been described as a 4 year cycle. 5 years, possibly, but it's not set in stone.

The cycle is probably determined by accounting.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I agree. I think WHFB is doing as well as it can atm. Besides the power creep with Daemons, I am enjoying the newest edition.

Yeah demons was a huge mistake for WFB.. If anything GW should skip 8th edition and rerelease that codex asap.. but they wont, so whatever

I think its a bit early, but then again I felt the same about 5th ed. 40k. I think we still have at least a year yet, although here is the easy way to figure it out. Check the past 1 or 2 newest army books for rules that don't 100% make sense. Particularly daemons. Consider why the rules don't make sense, then figure out what changed to the core ruleset might bring them into balance again. I would recommend doing this with Chaos Daemons, as a new edition might explain why they are currently so overpowered when in reality they may be balanced under a new edition.

Thats just my theory anyway.

I chalk it up to GW having a huge inventory of daemons and needed a reason to sell them . . . .

Then a big Ooops! sorry. Let us revise that for ya.

Time for wild speculation. If there is an 8th Edition, what's in the box? I say High Elves & Beasts of Chaos :p

Following 40k trend (and the wildly popular AoBR) I'll say:

Empire and Orks

Though High Elf / Dark Elf would be entertaining.

Eldar players would snatch it up for bits I would think.

I'm gonna go for Empire and Orks, just because I don't tend to see many people playing them at the moment, and they have a good selection of models to tempt new players into buying more.

I'm still pretty sure GW run to a four year cycle. There was a hitch a few years back to it meaning (40k i think) was put on a 5 year for a short time due to lotrs getting in the way. It's not a update as needs but something all major games companies need to do to keep selling new stuff. D&D for example had a fine rules set, yet that still gets updates evry 4 or 5 years, other wise they wouldn't sell enough core books to support the game. Same with GW, if they don't tweak rules to change the gameplay epople will just end up sticking with the one rules set and an army they like that works with it. Not good for business.

GW wants a 4-year cycle, because they can't turn the crank any faster. This maximizes revenue for existing players by selling more base versions of the rules, while avoiding the need for FAQs as the ruleset gets "stale".

It is said next year is to be very heavy WHFB like how this year was 40k heavy...

So it would make sense.

I just hope the magic phase gets re-tuned (you have to either go whole hog magic offense or no magic...middle-weight magic just doesn't do much). I also wish they'd go back to the 5th ed 'flyers count as attacking the front of the unit' to slightly tone down monstrous flyers.

Oh, and the abomination that is daemons needs to get nerfed hard.

The VC and DE books are both fixable through minor revisions. Damn near the whole book is massively mis-pointed for DOC.

from what I have heard, the last lord of the ring expansion (war of the ring?) was supposed to be a playtest of potential new whfb rules set.

this is not validated, but sounds somewhat reasonable.

and except for having to buy lotr models, I what I heard about the rules were pretty good.

Too many armies need new books before we need a new edition. Cases in point:

Skaven
Tomb Kings
Ogres
Beasts of Chaos (how about getting the five-model minimum, hm?!)

If WHFB isn't due to be redone next year then what is likely to be the big release next year? Another 40k supplement?

Hopefully a WHFB supplement. The game is so ripe for a massive campaign, it's a shame they don't put more effort into doing one well.

I hope it's a WFB siege with Towers and Fortresses done all modular like CoD/Planetstrike terrain.

Should be WFB to fit the new 4-year cycle:
08 40k v5
09 WotR v1
10 WFB v8
11 Apoc v2
12 40k v6
13 WotR v2
...

Something like that.

highly, highly dubious, and closer to just wrong.

WotR plays vastly different from WFB. It's mean't for exactly what it is: recreating large battles from Lord of the Rings. It would not be possible to adapt WFB to wotr without losing 90% of what WFB is. While Wotr is a great game, forcing the system on WFB players would simply result in a huge boycott of the new system in favor of the old, or an exodus of WFB players.

I play both, and like both. And while I might be intriqued to see how someone would take all the WFB armies and convert them, I hope it never happens. Frankly, most armies would turn out the same, with what made them unique pared away to make them fit the new system.

Having played Warhammer from the 1st edition (yes I'm an old git) I have to admit that I now prefer WotR to the current edition of Warhammer. Actually tempted to try and convert a couple of armies over to the WotR rules now...
