I've been following comments made by the usual suspects on warseer for a while, and I've had many pm about this with different people.

Warhammer 8th ed is coming out next summer. Apparantly O&G will not be in the box.

With the rumours about chaos dwarfs I think this rulebook will be worth buying, seeing as IF they are the new army they will have a full colour section like everyone else, and probably be released shortly afterwards (to make best use of the hype). Pure speculation of course.

I say they'll go to 6 in a rank being the minimum, just to make you buy more models.

I'll be pretty irritated if this is the case- they need to get the release schedule fixed.

This year has been mostly a 40k year, so next your could very well have a heavy fantasy focus.

Why should you be irritated?

As I noted above, WFB8 in 2010 is right on schedule.

(If you haven't noticed, GW has rules editions on a 4-year cycle that has absolutely nothing to do with Warhammer Armies / Codex releases.)

Because I don't agree with that strategy? I think GW should update every book inside every edition. If that takes 6 years, then we have six year edition cycles.
Anything else is bad form.

Though they could earn no end of good will by doing a FoW-style Rulebook swap deal.

I think some sort of Apoc release for WFB would be a better idea. Either that or a fantasy equivalent of Cities of Death/Planetstrike.

I have the antique Warhammer Siege, but I don't think that is the way to go. Sieges can be quite dull. I suppose the actual breaching of the walls could be fun. Street to street fighting could actually be quite fun.

I wonder what other direction GW could take WFB?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Fantasy doesn't readily need an Apocalypse equivalent seeing as Fantasy handles really well on its own in big battles. Plus WD already had a free supplement in it for mega battles in fantasy.

I wouldn't mind seeing an 'order' system implemented. That's what I like about Warmaster - and what I've been told about WotR. I like the sense that my army is controlled by its leaders.

Not the same system used in those games, mind you, but something that gives a feeling like that would be cool.

Ah, that must have been during my 15 year GW hiatus.

I've not played WFB since 1993, even longer than W40k, back when it was the elves and goblins box-set (3rd Ed? 4th?) and I suppose I used to play some pretty high ponts-value games then, so you are right on that, I guess.

The rules for that are on their website here

A reliable source I trust let slip at the weekend that they are working on a new boxed set for Warhammer, so new rules should be on the way.

Contents rumoured as "pointy ears and furry ears"

I'd guess High or Wood Elves and Skaven?

Thoughts anyone?

As an indication of his usual veracity he told me about plastic kans before christmas and he has quite a bit of free time wandering about the GW office with no one looking over his shoulder so he does get a look at things being worked on live in advance.

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

Curious. Wouldn't have figured Elves to get into the starter set. Wonder if that means new Elf infantry, though...

What?!?

OK, I'm a bit late to this party, but...

Are there serious rumors that CHAOS DWARFS *might* be returning?

That would make me very, very happy.

This isn't just the "Fantasy Forge World Rumor" give a different coat of paint though, it?

Starter boxes are themed as "good vs evil", so it's Elves vs Skaven / Beasts. Beasts aren't so furry anymore, more roid-ragers, and large bases, so "evil" would be Skaven. High Elves in their blue & white look more "good", so I'm going to pick them as the pointy-ears.

Model-wise, I'd guess:

High Elves
- Mage
- Archers
- Spearmen
- Silver Helms
- Giant Eagle

Skaven
- Warlock
- Clanrats
- Slaves
- Jezzails
- Rat Ogre

@Alpharius
There are still no rumours being discussed that they will make it into the rulebook sadly (I have been asking around). So if I understand your meaning then yes, it is the same rumours that Chaos Dwarfs are a high priority for the fantasy forge world. Presumably they will be writing the list.

@Druidic.

At any point if that guy learns anything about Chaos Dwarfs I'm always keen to know Anything at all.

My understanding of the current things being discussed for 8th:

Some changes to rank bonuses, still not clear yet whether this is only specific to core units or not (some of the rumours point to a greater emphasis on core units... again).

Rumours of fairly big changes to the magic system

15 scenarios in the book

Orcs and Goblins V Empire more or less already confirmed in the contents, however, there have been rumours of multiple sets.

Chaos Dwarves are pretty much listed as the first thing "Fantasy Forge World" is going to be doing, from everything I've been told/heard from FW when I've asked.

In terms of expansions, I'd like to see a book released which contains lists and stats and that for Historic battles, like Sigmar uniting the tribes at Blackfire Pass. That would be cool.

I'd like to see a skirmish game suppliment for fantasy.

Maybe along the lines of the Mordhiem game, but with the standard fantasy elements.

As for an 8th edition so soon.... How?

They still have a couple of rereleases to go through to milk the golden calf.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

They'll milk them in 8th.

GW has moved towards a 4 year rules cycle, for sales reasons.

We all have to get used to it!

The same way they did it so soon for 40K. It's coming. I already sold my hard cover and soft cover copies of the current Fantasy rulebook months ago while they were still worth something.

We had a Skirmish game supplement. It was called "Warhammer Fantasy Battles: Skirmish" and was about the size of a small issue of White Dwarf.

It's still pretty aces, but needs to be reworked a bit. Woodland Ambush is FTW.

$57.75 is cheap? Really?

Since when have I ever paid $57.75 for a GW rulebook?

Hell, I didn't even pay that much for the 40k3 boxed set.

Not impossible I'd say.

I don't think this is right but.. you know.. not impossible.

"Monstrous infantry".

I would agree to perhaps some changes with regards to ranked units, magic and cavalry too.
I think War machines might be tweaked a bit as well -- maybe no more partials judging by the skaven book. Might be some changes to chariots too perhaps.. but those rumours might be mixed up with Tomb King ones. With a bit of luck we should see the plastic DE and WoC chariots later this summer...*crosses fingers* 3 months caveats etc etc of course.

I remember them releasing a short series of expansions themed around historical battles. I'm guessing they didn't sell well, because there were only three...

The first was High Elves vs Dwarves
Then there was Orcs vs... gah! can't remember which race
And the last was Bretonnians vs Vampires

A book similar to the 40K missions expansion they're going to release might work better...

I remember those. Came in boxes with cardboard scenery.

Ogres?

Their 'turn' is coming up soon anyways... combining with the boxed set is a good way to get it done.

Shame though, I'm hoping Empire is one of the armies, but then most of their army has already been successfully converted to plastic.
