The Great State of Texas

How was this even considered in a public pool? PC gone stupid. Don't you people have separation of church and state, or is that only here in the land of mouthbreathing Nascar driver watching fundamentalists?

London drops 'burkini' swimwear for non-Muslims
Buzz up!Like this story? Share it with Yahoo! Buzz
A London district council has rescinded rules that banned conventional swimsuits at a public pool to avoid offending Muslims.

All women, regardless of religion, had to wear the so-called burkini (or burquini) — an outfit consisting of head scarf, tunic and trousers — while men had to be covered from the navel to the knees.

The rules were put in place for weekend swimming sessions geared to Muslims in which men and women swam separately. Swimmers had to meet the "modest" dress code required by Islamic custom. T-shirts, however, are forbidden in public pools.

The Croydon council dropped the guidelines from its website after the news generated a backlash.

Across the English Channel, France has taken the opposite approach to the burkini. A 35-year-old woman was recently evicted from a pool outside Paris for wearing the head-to-toe swimwear because it is considered unhygienic.

I was told off by staff at a pool in Malaysia for wearing a shirt in the pool.

After trying to tell me that the fibres in my shirt would damage the filters (even though the shirt is made of the same stuff as my swimming shorts), they eventually relented and told me that it was because they did not want the Muslim women swimming in the pool (they had to sit on the side covered head to foot and watch the children while the dads floated about in the pool in his swimming shorts/trunks).

I have nothing against muslim women wearing the full body swimming suits, I've seen some wear them before - someone I went to school with wore them when she went to the pool.

I don't mind having swimming time dedicated to women only (as there is in a lot of pools about).

However, dividing the pool for special muslim sessions is a bit crazy.

Just have mens and womens swimming as they do normally... then the women can wear whatever they want, and the men only session will have no one going to it.

All the men will just go to the mixed sessions like they do normally...

My dear deceased Nan lived in Croydon, she referred to the council there as 'Fething lefty, woolen tie and open top sandels wearin bloody PC communist bastards' (she was, herself, somewhere rightwing of Atilla the Hun). The district has long been famous for it's rediculous extremist PC rules and regs.

If Muslims are offended by the way people dress in Great British public facilities they shouldn't fething go there. I've no doubt they also considered compulsary headscarfs for female librarians in public libraries. The women using that swimming pool would have done so WITH THE TAXES THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED, they should be entitled to dress in a manner acceptable TO THE MAJORITY WISHES OF THE UNITED KINGDOM'S CITIZENRY.

Given the birth rates in the UK, just give it a few decades and they will be the majority. It will happen in a simmilar way as it did in Malaysia...

That about sums it up.

I never take a report from the Daily Torygraph at face value, but I can't be bothered to check this one.

There is no separation between church and state in the UK. We have the Church of England as the official state religion. Bishops sit in the House of Lords and it is illegal for the sovereign or heir to be a Catholic or to marry a Catholic.

It is probably a good thing, we have far too many royals as it is without adding rules about not being able to use contraception on top of things

There is no law that either prevents or allows to wearing of the burqini in the UK and nor should there need to be. Not allowing this for hygiene reasons ala t-shirts is a valid reason for not allowing this dress. I would actually be suprised if this got passed the Health and Safety Executive

What this article is about is that Croydon council (not a spine amongst them) will not ban attire that would otherwise not be allowed if it wasn't associated with a religious group. Why did they allow it;

1) The fear of being branded a racist in a diverse borough (not good for the re-election)
2) The fear of legal action and the resulting payout

They did this to avoid adverse publicity in the local area, this will inevitably change because they will get adverse publicity nationally. No such thing as bad PR? Wait till the British Press get hold of it!

Local government: because intellegent qualified people have better things to do!

it might be changing

It's really just to protect the CoE from suddenly having a Catholic as the titular had of it, and all the "fun" that would go with such a situation.

I think quite opposed to hygine it is the health and safety issue of shirts presenting a drowning risk, as they can ride up over the head.

There might also be a risk of weak swimmers being pulled under by the extra weight.

Admittedly, someone using a properly designed shirt (such as a rash guard surf shirt) whould not have a problem with either of those things.

Though perhaps because people only tend to wear swimming kit to swim in, they think it will be relatively clean. But if someone wears a shirt, who knows where it has been, or when it was last washed, etc.

I am sorry for not being PC, but if they don't like it, they can go back where they came from.

I think that is roughly what some Australian politian said to muslims regarding Shariah(sp?) law. I wish he was PM here.

I've no issue if Muslim women want to wear a Burquini. No issue at all. I have an issue with a government building in a country that prides itself on its freedoms engforcing those restrictions on everyone in a public setting.

You wonder why your BNP is gaining influence?

I love political correctness. It gives me something to laugh at. The irony of it all is what gives me the biggest guffaws - in an effort to appease one group of people another group is offended. It's like trying to find the end of a circle and they're spending millions of our money to try and do it.

Muslim British citizens have every bit the same right to be here as us magnificent celts and you filthy saxons, neither they nor the appeasing and spineless gakkers in political 'authority' have the right to tell people who do not belong to that minority religion to dress according to that religion's rules.

Killkrazy, appreciate the irony of your pictures and the well we were wearing similar until recently, importantly though, women in this country no longer dress to victorian standards nor are they bound by the dictates of a religion they are not a part of.

I have no issue with a woman wearing one of those things, other than to feel sorry she was born into what I believe is an oppressive, bigoted and facist religion, I do object to a publically owned swimming pool enforcing the rules of one particularly manipulative and bullish minority group.

I would point out that these rules only applied to weekend sessions geared towards Muslim bathers. It's not entirely unusual for even public services to cater to large minorities from time to time with special sessions and the like. You have family swim, adult swim, and Sharia Swim. Lots of fun for everybody....

that said, I grew up in a neighborhood which was predominantly Arab and Muslim and the boys at least still swam in the public pools. Of course, my neighbors were mostly Lebanese and Syrians which run more moderate.

While it seems like it was probably an attempt to simply open the pool up to people that wouldn't normally use it, you're not going to make many friends asking non-Muslims to dress "modestly."
