As part of GW's attempts to get their gak together they are and will be releasing more and more articles/similar for download. I mentioned already the forthcoming "13th mission" pdf which will let you design your own Hulk missions, and Jervis Johnson in the forthcoming WD unveils the first of his "Battlefield Challenges" which are new scenarios and missions for ALL their core systems. I've heard some rumblings to do with prizes for contributions as well.. exactly how this works I am as yet unsure.
Vaguely related to this : Planetary Empires Strategy cards.
EDIT ON FRIDAT AFTERNOON : link is down/gone at the moment as GW fiddle with "stuff".

Will they continue to support Planetstrike? I only ask because after it's release month they seem to have completely forgotten that it exists. [EDIT]: Oh FFS, 5 PDF files? What was so difficult about making it a single PDF file. Technology Fail = GW.

I'm really happy to see the hobby material expanding. Perhaps FFG's good example is changing the industry giant. Way to go for both organizations!

Very true, however considering the amount of sales they still make what incentive is there for them to change?

Those books seem to be more like DM's guides. More for a person that is into running sophisticated campaigns. I may buy them as I have been brainstorming some sort of large scale, conquer the galaxy type of thing. This will help with that.

Just had a thought: Wouldn't it be kind of amusing, and possibly beneficial, if FFG bought out GW? Sort of how Pixar was rumored to be buying out Disney, only successful hopefully.
It might be an interesting thing to have a company that focuses on rules and fluff aquire a mini's company that can't be bothered to.

Has anyone got a copy?
I quite like the idea of putting together all the terrain tiles but I don't want to waste £30 if it's rubbish.

Well it's not that it's bad or good - the rulebook is a Jervis-written pamphlet at best - but the product isn't the rules, it's the tiles. As far as the tiles go, the Planetary Empires ones aren't too awe-inspiring in and of themselves. I'd suggest getting one of each type, as the Mighty Empires tiles will give you something other than blasted craters to use - actual rivers and mountains and whatnot.
As for the rules - do whatever you want. Make them as complicated or as simple as you want.

No. Raw plastic as with everything else GW does. I can say with some certainty that if they were pre-paints there would have been a lot more noise about them.
So no, you've got to paint them, which is fine as you can do some interesting things with them, especially as most of them are double sides. Best thing I've seen so far is someone taking the 'river' tiles from Mighty Empires, painting the river like sand, and then one half of the tile like the sea, creating beach tiles. Quite clever IMO.

The tiles are pretty decent. I was amazed at how well they stuck together. The rules are ~4 pages long though, with the rest of the pamphlet's volume being made up of the rules in different languaes. I don't even think there is any new artwork.
It is decent for what it is, which is, as HBMC said, a bunch of tiles that link together.
Side note: what sort of terrain does Mighty Empires come with? Are there 5 distinct types, enough that I could use them for Settlers of C'tan?

That's a different box, entirely. That's for Warhammer Fantasy, but I imagine you could mix those in with Planetary Empires.

My review.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/254388.page#940313
To make it a bit clearer, there are 8 hexagonal tiles on a sprue. Each tile is double-sided except the spaceport and each side is unique. There are 15 different terrain types.
Mighty Empires is the same only depicting more rural terrain.
You can create more variation in the appearance of the tiles by the way you paint them.
Also, it would be easy to customise a tile using green stuff or textured acrylic gel.

Probably on the underside of some of the one's pictured.
'Cause that's the other thing - all of these are double sided, except the mountains/space port tiles IIRC (and the Hive City, I 'spose).

Really, I could basically do half the companies graphic design work from here. The old etched fake-metal codexes with their little layer effect rivets I suspect are just a pdf they copy and throw a painting onto at this point. Its sad, they have a great art team and the white dwarf guys seem to do ok. But its all so rough around the edges when its not a major release.

Actually the Hive City is double-sided. The reason is it so expensive is that a holesaw is supplied so you can cut the right size hole in your gaming table for when you want to use the other side.
