2-1, 2-1, 2-1!!! They're coming home, they're coming home, the Ashes are coming home! Mind you in fairness I have no idea how we managed it When it comes to sporting event gloating you can't beat us Brits & Aussies, both of love getting one over on the other

... oh sorry, forgot, talking about cricket and the Ashes series.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

No, you can't beat the English and the Aussies.

But I far prefer to deal with a gloating Aussie. That way, Telly isn't completely unbearable for non-English people living in the UK.

I think people will spend a long time trying to figure out how Australia lost that series. I guess at the end of the day England skittled Australia cheaply twice in the first innings, and those were the two tests they won. On the other hand, Australia only ran through the English once, and that was the test we won. It was a good series, with expectations for the teams swinging all over the place as one team then the other gained ascendency, but it's a shame we couldn't have made it a bit closer in the last test.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Australia fall to No. 4 in Test rankings

Cricinfo staff

August 23, 2009
Text size: A | A

Australia's 2-1 Ashes defeat, confirmed with a heavy 197-run loss at The Oval on Sunday, has cost them their No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings. They have slipped to fourth, with South Africa now the No. 1 Test team in the world, followed by Sri Lanka and India.

It is the first time the Australians have lost their grip on the top spot since 2003, when the ICC introduced its current ranking system. The defeat has cost them eight points but despite the series result they remain ahead of their arch rivals England, who are in fifth place. England gained six points but are still 11 behind Australia.

Australia were in danger of losing their No. 1 ranking towards the end of last year, when they lost a home Test series to South Africa 2-1. A consolation win in the third Test in Sydney ensured they retained top spot and they also held on thanks to their follow-up series victory in South Africa.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Exactly, it's football. A game you play with your foot. The Americans just tweaked rugby and then couldn't think of a name, so thought "hey, football, that'll do".

Rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen, and football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans.

And American Football is Rugby by a different name played by hooligans.

No, not losing the series, we understand how that happens. The Indians outplayed us in India and the South Africans gave us a proper thumping here in Oz (we only salvaged pride from that by winning the dead rubber third test).

The mystery is losing this series, given we generally scored a lot more runs for every wicket we lost. Full credit to England, holding on in the first test, bouncing back after the fourth test and closing out the two tests where you had managed to reach winning positions, but for Australia this will be a series that should have been different.

It could be because when you have sports like cricket and soccer that people actually like they get played all around the world, including places that have terrorist problems. The only way to keep a clean sheet from terrorism is to play sports nobody else likes, which means American Football will be safe from terrorism for a long time to come .

Oh, and it was Pakistani terrorists attacking the Sri Lankan team bus, India wasn't involved.

I don't know, I mean the last twenty years the Australian team did rely on them to eat through the batting order a hell of a lot. While Australia are still a great team I think their dominance is over just as the west indie's period was when ambrose, richards and walsh grew old.

As for why you lost this series, no character when it really mattered. Yes, Australia got more wickets and runs. But when they needed to bowl monty out in the first test to win, it didn't happen. When you needed to hold strong when your first wicket fell at seventy odd not out on friday, you didn't. Wheras, England, held on against the odds in cardiff. Broke haddin and clark's partnership at edgebaston, and followed through the order. Bowled a stunning innings to defy your 73 not out on friday. Them moments show australia certainly lacked the spirit england had.

Yes, you won at headingly. Hands down, the england side got it completely wrong. Both batting and bowling. But the rest of the series speaks for itself, you didn't perform when it mattered.

I think to a certain extent you underestimate england aswell. I can't see where "it should have been different." I think teams were more evenly matched than you make out.
