What are you looking for in your army? do you want it to be competitive or just for fun?

thats just the way i roll

Is it possible to have a competitive Ogre list?

Never count on rolling to save your ass. More often than not, average in tight situations runs far below average.

3 Butchers one with Bangstick, 3 units of 3 Bulls with Bellower, 3 units of 3 Ironguts with Bellower, 2 units of 2 Leadbelchers. Fill out the rest of the pts with whatever you want.

The bulls aren't really needed. One unit is of course required. Since they have somewhat crappy weapons, leadership, and armor options, Ironguts are a much better core choice. The only reason I personally would take multiple bull units is to bring more gnoblars. (on a related note, has anybody actually played with 4 scraplaunchers? that would be the best terrible army ever!) I'm going to second the triple butcher, though 2 with a BSB wouldn't be terrible.

As for competitive ogres: If they get rhinox riders then they approach being competitive, but they have too many issue beating other lists: low model count, low leadership, low WS, low intiative, restrictive unit selections, and somewhat underwhelming magic. Its almost if they designed the book as more of a source of Dogs of War than a stand alone army. Certainly ogres do better when they aren't in ogre lists. All that being said, ogres can really smack around undead armies unless the opposing general is pretty good. A frontage of 4 ironguts will easily clear the front rank, and often will beat out static resolution. (12 attacks, 8 hits, just under 7 wounds, -3 armor save) Can it do the same to a more elite army that has killing power of its own? Usually not.

Anybody who picks up ogres is probably doing it for fun. I had a blast playing with them, they were my first army. I actually had a winning record with them, but that is more of a reflection of the casual meta game I was playing in.

Nobblers are really lame and unfunny comedy, however, you might want to include a few units as "speed bumbs" or "meat shields". I think they are like a point a piece or something. I remember theYeti being hard to deal with too, but to be honest I haven't played against OK in a long long time.

I usually shoot Yhetees up whenever I see them since they're a pain to deal with in CC without CR. Otherwise they fulfill a similar role to fast cav except with less baiting.

Yeah, but bulls should be spending most of their time setting up the Ironguts for charges, and if they do fight they're usually beating up on a scrubby unit. I was thinking of a 2250 list when I wrote it up, so I'd say at 2k two blocks would be the minimum choice.

Also Rhinox riders rock.

If the original poster wanted to know what to buy for the army I would ofc recommend the army book, battalion box, 1-2 special units like yhetees or something, a rare choice like a gorger or two, Tyrant/Bruiser and a couple of Butchers. Its pretty easy and fast to build an ogre army cuz of the huge point costs per model and especially fast to paint since the units tend to only have 2-6 max models in them (apart from gnoblars ofc). When I got back to WHFB after a 3 years of absence or so, I decided to start with Ogres. They were really fun I have to admit but its gonna be tough beating other armies with decent players. You'll get the hang of it in time I'm sure

P.S. Even though the Hunter looks and seems like a good choice, I never found much use for him in my lists. Why does he have a bolt thrower when I want him in close combat anyway? :(

A good combo for Heros i have seen in the past is a Tyrant with 3 buchers.

Iron Guts are better than Bulls as core.

If you want to use gnoblars make them trappers, of cousre you may need a hunter.

Why no giants? I think they are fun to play.

The loss of Stubborn is huge. I think it's an example of great fluff, but bad followthru.

Are we back to be allowed to use Rhinox Riders? They do help the army out ALOT.

I think that as it is a Forgeworld Product and not in the Army Book it needs to be used with your opponent's permission.

Short answer: don't take to tourneys.

If I saw 882 Gnoblars on the table I would probably just leave. No, not really.

I wouldn't want to be the player with them when you have to turn the whole unit around when they flee ^^

I saw a video of that army, gnoblar in the hundreds.

Sharp stuff kills everything... granted they are on a hill.
