As I was painting today, I listened to an interview online with Dr. Brian Weiss MD. He was the first hypnotherapist to stumble across "Past Lives" as a phenomenon while treating his patients.

So, cutting to the chase; do you believe in past lives? If so, do you have any experience regarding this? Do you have a past life?

I don't believe in past lives because of religious reasons, although I will admit the theory intrigues me. I believe that in the most intricate complexities of the human mind our brain will subconsciously meld information together and create an entire set of memories. It has been described by some psychologists as "active dreaming."

If this man honestly belives the "Past Lives" his patients describe are anything other than the product of their imaginations he needs to be stripped of his MD sharpish.

Sounds like first class quackery to me.

I found the clip. If you've got a couple hours to kill here it is. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2116422939505683699&hl=en

I found it pretty interesting as it ties in with a lot of quantum physics ideas and stuff, but when people start calling in saying their husband was St.Peter and walked with Jesus, etc, I take a step back. But definitely interesting if you're into the esoteric spiritual stuff.

But don't you know that everyone was a famous person in their past life?

There is of course the problem that we started with a certain number of people in the world and are currently at the highest point of world population. If only, let's say, there was 1000 people 100 years ago and today there is 5,000, where did the other 4000 souls originate since they had no past life? I know a few theories but I'll leave it to you, the good people (Dakka members can try to).

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I believe in it in the same way that I believe in, pixies, spirits, ghosts, god, and honest politicians who are actually working for the people they represent...

I thought this stuff was completely debunked long ago.

If any of us were under hypnosis, the hypnotist could tell us we're in the year 1837 and ask us what we see. And we'd describe all kinds of stuff based on what we think the year 1837 would look like. If you carefully wrote down the things we said, you'd eventually uncover some anachronisms and inconsistencies. Basically, in that suggestive state, our minds will fill in whatever details we're asked to provide.

Whether or not reincarnation exists is something we can't really answer. But "past life regression" under hypnosis is a different thing and really a bunch of bunk.

I dunno, I think it could be possible. Anything is possible. Only way to find out is to go jump in front of a train and see what happens next

But, if god made everything and we are reincarnating then why would our past live be human? maybe we used to be a dog or cat or roach or klingon.

I kinda like the Past life memory theory from Assassin's Creed.

As someone who hears voices on a somewhat regular basis (during heavy stress/depression) and "should" be on meds, I can say I've never found the theory to hold any wait. It's about as plausible to me as thetans being trapped in my body.

I don't really have a problem with people beliving in past lives.however IMO it's another form of " wish fulfilment",as every single person I've ever encounterd who claims to have past life experiance was always somone interesting,a gangster,an ancient warrior of some sort,a princess,no one was ever a stockboy at walmart that was killed by a runaway forklift.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

About to eat your Avatar...

FITZZ is right... I think it would be pretty interesting to have lived a thousand years ago for instance, or preferably as a caveman. Being important is not as fulfilling as most would like, you need to be the Shiznit-O-bam-snizzle-it before you become important to be completely fulfilled.

I was this guy... and sure, why not? What is the harm in deifying a dusty corpse... wait... hmmm, do not answer that .
"Self Deification"

So what you do now is put on the mask and learn what is has to teach, no different from learning how to wipe your butt from your parents. I simplify this of course, and losing yourself into a message and deity is a great way to learn things before and... blablabla... silly dog.

I was him too... but this was my favorite life in all honesty.

I'll throw this in to the pot, found this link on a WWII history site I visit:

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

From England. Living in Shanghai

I have no idea if it's true or not, but I remember watching a documentary on tv a long time ago where one guy believed he was soldier. It was quite amazing as the guy came up with all sorts of details that the hypnotherapist later researched and found them all to be true.

Could have been faked though, but the possibility is there I guess.

I don't believe, simply because the people in question are always pharaohs. If they said to me,' yeah, I worked in Mcdonalds from 73 to 79 when I committed suicide after realising how pointless my life and me were', I might consider it then. It's all down to the small man syndrome, people have to believe they're churchill, or jesus or something.

A lot of them aren't famous at all. I used to think that to; How many Napoleons are there dating Cleopatras in psyche wards throughout the world? There was one case, and it is all over google video, of this like young kid, 5 or 6 maybe, who knows everything about the P-47 Thunderbolt and the identity of some dude who died in the Pacific shooting down zeroes.

It's all very X-Files.
