The question seems self-explanatory. I have not seen a WD review on here for a couple months, it seems. I was curious about "this" month's issue with Space Hulk, and definitely "next" month's Space Wolves themed issue.

I wont be surprised if Dakka *2 already have all the "info" WD has , and earlier too as well.
I think people just dont find it worth while to review bunch of GW advertisement :<

Well, seeing how getting Space Wolf info has been like squeezing blood from a stone.... I was curious.

I flipped through it.
They have a nice formula for gold that is a simple 5 layer technique.
But other than that, it's not worth 10% of Space Hulk.
Which is what a large portion of the magazine is about this month.
So I took the money that would have been spent on the magazine and spent it on half of a Destroyer Lord.

Here's your review of the current WD and all the last WD's since the last review. It sucked. Not worth the huge price tag. Until WD ceases to be a print version of the online store I won't buy it.

I think thats a resounding no.

I'll give you a brief rundown though: space hulk articles all good, tactical based shulk bat rep and a painting guide with a nice red technique and the aformentioned gold technique, plus the usual game design blurb that comes with every new release. Then you have an article on Harker/Straken, basically a slightly more in depth background and small tactica for each. Then you have the same for Azhag.

Finally there was a orc/dark elf bat rep and the continuation of thier in house planetary empires campaign, both of which were ok but nothing special. Then there was all the usual 'buy our crap' blurb.

All in all the hulk stuff was good and the rest felt like filler.

There you go, WD reviewed.

I liked this issue a lot actually.

But the main reason reviews aren't done is because the slightest glimmer of optimism is mercilessly shot down.

Yeah...that's why.

Personally, my money is on the idea that it's kinda pointless to review an advertisement. There has to be content, something there worth reviewing in the first place.

To me, whenever someone brings up something good, others always barge in with the same old arguments time and again. Why review it when people are just going to fling mud at every time?

Exactly.

This was one of the rare Lotr/wotr free WD-issues.

Same old "arguments"? That would imply a counter-point. It's not an "argument" that WD is gak - it's a fact.

Think current WD is best for some time

The Warhammer Battle Report features two non Eavy Metal armies which doesn't sell the current release (i.e. Azhag the Slaughterer) and features good old turn by turn maps

Space Hulk is infinitely preferable to LoTR/WoTR

Another Army of the Month makes a bow (subtract points for it being a Smurf army though)

Standard Bearer is actually bearable

Slightly concerned by Clanrat sculpts, but always nice to get a sneak peak

So for me, a definite step or two in the direction of the good old days.

It's an opinion. For someone with a decent sized disposable income, it is readable. It is not as good as it was back in the day when it was a genuinely great hobby magazine rather than a few steps away from being undisguised advertising, but there are generally still some bits worth reading. Last month was the worst in a while, I'll happily admit, but I'll still buy it for a while yet, even if I wouldn't recommend it as a good investment for someone on a tight budget.

So when should we see the next WD? Middle of September? It's going to have an entire article on using the new Space Wolf Sprue.

What's the mission generator for Hulk? If it's in there I'll buy the issue just for that.

The quality just isn't there to merit the effort, most times.

I am hearing good things about this month's, but last month's?

That was an absolute waste of space!

And I generally look forward to getting WD every month!

Rick Priestly's promise of a while back (to make WD worth reading again, basically) hasn't happened yet...

I have noticed the lack of WD reviews, but I also noticed that I
didn't really care. WD has to compete with the Internet for
providing news and scoops, I learn more about model abilities
and tactics from reading the discussions on this forum than
from the magazine, and the conversion and painting projects
posted here on Dakka and on various hobby blogs are more
inspirational than some of the stuff in the mag.

It's too bad. I used to like reading the magazine.

I think we need another thread of what we'd pay to read in a White Dwarf magazine. I
doubt the list will jive with the marketing goals of the magazine.

I can't bear to look at WD since the price increase. I let my subscription run out. It used to be a decent mag, but the articles are lacking these days.

For what it's worth, for the fantasy battle report GW got two local tournie gamers to play a game and reported on it. They didn't play army of the month, they didn't use studio armies, they just tried to choose hard lists and beat each other.

The painting article is nice, the space hulk coverage makes me glad I ordered it, and the long section describing their in house campaign gives you a lot of cool ideas.

It's a good issue of White Dwarf. What that means to you depends on your opinion of White Dwarf.

It has quite a lot of useful pictures of SH. I am glad I got the issue since it helped me plan out my Deathwatch conversion of the Termies, but I doubt I would have bought it if I did not have a subscription.

I get the magazine for free from an overstocked hobby shop, so I don't really mind it. It makes for half decent reading when I'm waiting for load times on games or the washes to dry on my Orks.

QFT, Not trying to be yet another "negative necron" throwing rocks at WD,but there is no disputing that over the years WD has devolved from an entertaing and informitive hobby magazine into a gaint pile of "HEY KIDS! BUY THIS!"

I'll be as negative as I want to be, so long as GW is giving me every reason to. Sorry if some of you can't handle dissenting opinions, but this isn't a GW-lover's forum.

Here's more mud for you Brook, no matter how much better this month's issue was compared to the last ones, it's still not worth $9. I'd go as far as saying no magazine catalog is worth $9, it's unheard of. That's almost what you'd expect to pay for a fething novel.

You can actually pay less for a paperback novel. Hell, I can get a black library paperback at Barnes & Noble for cheaper than a WD.

I noted that there was a lot of Space Hulk material in the latest WD. Was there any additional material for the game such as an extra mission or some such?
