Hey, I have been painting up armies and want to play Warhammer 40k for real now because I make up my own rules, well the rule is 6" to move role dice and get six to kill, I no, slowed so where can I learn to play without buying rulebook because it is too dear, £30 to be precise. Thank you

Try a GW store, or by buying a rulebook. You could illegally download a torrent containing a rulebook, but that would be wrong, and cause Nurgle's Rot to start in your gonads.

Most likely yes. And GW clamps down hardcore. Best thing is buy the Assault on Black REach box set. You'll get the rulebook, a bunch of Space Marines and Orks, another hand out on how to play 40k simplified, dice, and measuring sticks.

After you learn how to play, you can always sell or trade off the models you don't want to keep.

check ebay, buy an assault on black reach book. usually go for around $15 USD, not sure what that is in your monies, but its definatly less than half of what it is for a real book.

beaten to it ><

It doesn't matter if you run a Security Program. But just buy AoBR and get the minirulebook.

Ah, you can have some of your friends chip in to buy the Assault on Black Reach box set. if you already have an army, you can get 2 more friends and split the cost.

there is no point buying AoBR because years ago i got a similar thing AoBR replaced it, and in sterling it is about £13 but they will just sell it £15 as they do everything

You know, if buying the rule book is too much building an army is going to break you.

Go play at an FLGS or a GW store. They might have rulebooks there for in-store use. Not all do. If you have a friend that plays, you can also get them to bring their rulebook.

If you're looking for a free copy off the internet, then you won't get an answer. That would be illegal (and suggesting it is against Dakka Forum ToS, to the people that did so)

But really, if you've been spending money on the minis, you should be able to save up and make the rulebook your next purchase. The minis are useless if you want to play but have no rules to go by. You'll also need to buy the Codex for your chosen army before you can play completely to effect. So if you haven't picked what race you want to focus on, you might as well do that and then pick up your rulebook and specific codex before buying any minis. Otherwise you'll be SoL for a long time, because it'll probably be another 4 years before another edition comes out (at least)

just buy AOBR and get the mini rulebook. Then you will have to actually buy a codex based on the army you are playing. You wont be allowed in store with a codex printed off the net.

well, my dad usually buys me a pack of marines or two when I go to GW because i go like 5 times a year in Belfast and I get £5 a month so a month and a half until I get a book and I would be so tempted to just order a bunch of troops by then and I don't have any friends that play, and my friends think warhammer is geeky, sad tho, because i'm the only none slowed warhammer fan in my school, but trying to turn their minds around

I keep digital versions of all the codecies for archival and research purposes, but it's always good to have the books for your respective armies. I won't play without a hard copy of my rulebook+codex on hand, and I won't play anyone who uses a fake book either.

Even if you do decide to go the illegal route and download your rulebook, it won't help you one bit because no one worth their salt will want to play with you anyway.

Not to mention you'd probably go through so much ink printing them out that you might as well buy the damn things.

So learn to focus on a goal (The goal being the rulebook) instead of just losing sight of the long term and snatching up the next shiney box and then going "Crap, now I'm back where I started". I'm guessing you're pretty young, but you might as well start working on it. You'll need said ability sooner or later anyway. Might as well polish up your goalsetting now by saving up for a rulebook or ABOR box and an SM Codex.

Better than waiting forever and never getting to play...

Save up, or get a paper round!

Definately worth the £30, although if you only get a fiver a month i'd go with Christmas pressie!

Good plan. Aside from letting you play in a store by buying a Rulebook, you also won't get levelled with a multi-£1000 lawsuit if GW found out

When I was 13, I (and the rest of the 8th grade) had to take a -course- in goalsetting. Was boring as feth but it helped. Look at this the same way. If you jump on every box that catches your eye, you'll never end up with the rulebook and you'll be kicking yourself because you'll be back at square one, and the process will repeat again. Might as well shove some cash aside, or just ask your pa' to buy you a rulebook instead of the usual 2 squads of marines the next time he takes you on one of your visits to GW. It's about the same price.

Christmas or your birthday, whichever happens first. Alternately, pool your money with all your friends and buy a rulebook for the bunch of you.

Age is no excuse, so don't bother saying "im 13"(sic) as an excuse for ignorance. Act like an adult and you'll be treated like an adult.

Go mow some lawns. Good money to be made for some easy work. I made 380 over the summer break working for an hour a week. If you can't get a real job, or don't want to commit yourself to one, it's a great way to make some extra pocket money.

Well, you just said you don't have any friends that play, so what's the rush?

Anyway, look on ebay, or any of the UK websites that sell assorted GW stuff and buy the mini-rulebook, since it's cheaper.

Dude, if the brutha's 13 cut him some slack. Still a kid...when I was 13 I was having fun and didn't know what I know now.

But I would definitely have everyone whose interested chip in a buy Assault on Black Reach. Those that their interest dies, you can pick up their models for cheap OR they'll get into it and you'll have more opponents to play.

SRM -does- have a point though. Age is no excuse for not having the patience to set a goal and keep on track with it. If you want something, set your sights on it and don't let yourself get sidetracked along the way.

And Fafnir is right. At your age, mowing lawns in the summer and shovelling diveways and sidewalks in the winter is a good way to get cash (And keep in shape). Paper routes are good when you're looking for an early career that you can stick on your first resumé in a couple years, And you can always have a garage sale and get rid of any old stuff you don't need anymore as well.

Once you get your first real job, you'll find money a bit easier to come by, but at your age all of the above will work fine.

I say wait for Xmas, and learn to play from others. I learned to play without an army, codex, or book, by asking. Some dude lent me an extra army, we played a couple games. The next day I bought the book, learned the rules, and now I have 2 armys over 4000+ points.

My point is, you can learn from others. You have a codex and small army already, just go to your FLGS and hop in, let em know you never played and done have a rules book, most people will gladdly play a small game and learn you but good!

Well, where I live, paper routes are kind of extinct. That whole new-fangled internet thing and all. And Newspaper dispensers are on pretty much every block too. Not exactly a reliable job these days.

Still, lawn care and shovelling is great. If you know some older neighbours who don't have kids to do it for them, go and ask if they'd like you do do that for them. Chances are they'd be more then happy to let you do that for them. At their age, 10 bucks a week or so isn't going to worry them, especially when they really won't want to do it themselves.

Likewise, if some neighbours are going on vacation for a while, offer to take care of their plants/animals/house/whatever. It's all very easy money with very little investment, great for a kid who needs to make some money.

I kind of understand why you think £30 is too much. When i first ever brought minis (40k) which was two years ago, i picked up a SM codex and the SW supplement. The SM codex has now been updated and the SW is just about to be updated too. And to think iv never used them yet either! I left my minis in their boxes for a year as i became too busy to bother, i then glued them and left them again for a while and im only just starting to paint. So them books are kind of wasted.
I do havea mini rulebook however, from the macragge box set, its very simple and covers all the basics. If you never played before, i suggest you go for that until you either a) have more money or b) master the basics and want to start playing additional rules.
As for a printed version, true you wont be allowed into a store to play with it, but if money is an issue you could just invite a friend over to your house and have(or used/damaged books?) a computer on nearby. Or buy a previous edition books as they go very cheap. Granted they are useless if you play anywhere other than with mates in a similiar situation but hey, its a solution.

I'd advise buying the AOBR and then selling the models to get some money back. That way you get a rule book and hopefully save money too.

Other than that, get down to GW, find someone who is willing to show you the ropes and teach you, you might also find some good gaming buddies you can play regularly against.

Another note is that if you regulary go to places without the right materials it will eventually annoy players that have put the money up to buy codex's and rulebooks, I think doing odd jobs would be a great way for you to get what you want sooner and earn you some valuable experience.

Either way, hope you work it out somehow and find some good players to play against
