I per sonally have fun and do what I want, but I usually paint models while they are mostly unassembled, only gluing they legs and body, then going from there. What do you do with your models?

Ok - I picked the middle two, as historically (and in the main) I have fully assembled, and then painted.

I have been keeping the backpacks and arms off recently, and that seems to give me plenty of access to those tricky bits.

I always assemble, and then paint. This mostly comes down to the fact that assembling is my most hated part of the hobby (the glue fumes muddle ma senses, and cleaning mold lines is boring but necessary for me).

I assemble then paint, as I hate painting so put it off for as long as possible

for infantry, depending on the model, it's head+legs+torso, paint. paint the arms/weapon seperately, then attach.

For tanks, I assemble as much as humanly possible while still having easy access to the things that need painting.

For my current crop of CSM I'm adding legs, torso and head, painting arms, weapons and backpacks separately as there's so much annoying trim that if I fully assemble I can't get to all the bits. It's a real pain though.

I've done rhinos with both methods but when fitted together the one I did in separate bits didn't look great and needed a small amount of GS filling (forgeworld doors and front) so the next I fully assembled and it looked better.

I used to paint everything on the sprue but had issues with poly cement wrecking paint jobs.

Now I build the whole model and paint it, exception being I leave the bolters off my space marines so I can do the chest eagle properly, oh and the guys off the horse for my LOTR models

Fully assemble then paint. I play the game first and paint second. I enjoy painting stuff but it takes me way longer to paint then to assemble so I can get a game in.

Infantry : Basecoat on-sprue, assemble, touch-up the "clipping points" and go from there (highlighting, etc.).

Vehicles : Interiors on-sprue, exteriors post assembly. Armament and equipment on-sprue with touch-ups during unit assembly.

I know it's picky, but I find it easier getting to those hard to reach spots than other methods.

I use different tactics depending on how much detail can be reached. If im building tanks and scenery i tend to build completely, spray with basecoat than use airbursh. For mini's i have got into the habbit of painting partially build and on the sprue. for example gretchin i paint the heads on the sprue then assemble.

I assemble, put basing material on, and then spray prime the figure to help seal and prime the basing
material simultaneously. Saves me a step later on.

If painting the ol' SM, I leave off the arms, weapons, backpacks and heads... Even the bases, too. I only assemble the legs and torso. To make all of the bits easy to paint, I drill holes into them and insert a small length of florists wire (with a blob of white/power tack on top.) Some components (like the legs) usually require wire in both feet. Then, I'll undercoat and basecoat 'em all, etc. Next, I move on to doing detail work by sticking them into a real cork which has had a whole drilled into it.

I always mask of areas that will be eventually glued with white/power tack, so that I can get the best possible bond. This may seem really long-winded, but in the long run, it does make life easier when it comes to painting... Usually. Oh yeah, always assemble first before varnishing/finishing.
