I'm looking for opinions and Ideas on this one.

Is it just me or does anybody else hate the deff dredd models. In an attempt to be origional I 'm going to try and scratch build one. For starters I'm going to be using the average ork for a design base since orks seem to model things from nature (STOMPAs come to mind). SO Imagine a mini Stompa that seems about right to me. Let me know what you think

If you need some decent and cheap plastic dreads look at my gallery pics.

All i used: AoBR dreadnought, deffkopta.

Ebay prices on these: Dread - $18, kopta - $6

cheap, effective and all plastic

I agree, the deff dread and killa kan kits are something awful. I kustomized a Ironclad dreadnought for a deff dread, and I plan on gettin a couple more to orkify. I thought about kitbashing a broadside or wraithlord as well.
For a mini stompa, maybe a small can or box of some kind, with lots of gubbins, killy and shooty bitz.
Da best part about being a mek is evry thin can be looted

Deffdred arnt impressive for their points AND their price.

For something way cheaper you get very nice point valued killakans and they are only a tiny bit smaller.

Oh i had alot of fun with my deffdred troop choice at a recent 500pt skirmish, my impG opponent had assumed I'd take as many boyz as possible, so he'd not taken anything in his entire list capable of hurting it... Equipped with 2ccw and 2burnas, it ran around the table making the impG army migrate ahead of it, occasionally catching, torching and rending down the unlucky slow ones.

OP, take a look at the walkers for AT-43 which can be picked up alot cheaper, you will need to use some plasticard and ork bits to modify them a bit, but they should look good.

Epic Great Gargants are cheaper than Dreff dreads and are more the shape that you are looking for.

No the epic gargants look a little to rolypoly for me. It's gonna be a mutt I can see that much now. I saw a penaent engine a the store and like the loook of its legs, that may be a starting point...... this will have to carry over to a WIP blog. I llook forward to getting your further input as this progresses. Sketches to follow on the WIP

If you like the rough leg design for the penitent engine then what about a IG sentinel?
Legs are allmost the same design, being plastic you can tweak possitioning much easier.

Also, with the sentinel kit you get tons of weps that can be put to use, plus the main body section of the sentinel that could also be used.

good call on the sentinel
i like the feet, but will have to beef out the legs like i was thinking of doing to the P E.

I'm thinking about a detailed cockpit with a sort off cybork crucified pilot

I agree, I think I would rather get a battlewagon for how much I would spend on a Deff Dread.

And as far as I've heard, they aren't very good on the battlefield either.

I don't know I still need to try and add some more knock out power in my army, and a couple of Dreds and a Kan MOB might be the way to go.

I need to post a picture of the Dred I scratch build recently. Its a bit larger then a dred, so rules wise I get the shaft but its so cool looking. I used the legs from a SM dred, and an old school webcam. The circle style ones. It looks very Orky, and any one can tell what it is, but man oh man it looks NOTHING like any dred Ive seen. I need to take some pics of it

Here is a pic of *one* of my current WIP's

I made it out of a McDonalds toy, a Robot Wars toy, and crazy random bits from the thrift store. Oh, and a inch long piece of 30mm PVC pipe.
I am going to make his shoulders more spikey and place some more gubbins on him. Also finish the smoke stack in the back. So far the cost to make him is $10.40

After getting off to a slow start I'v got the head built and the beginnings of the torso. The head is bsed from a coke plastic cap with plastic card wrapped around it and then more [plastic card and bitz eill have to be added. For the hips I'm using part of an old Ork Buggy, the wheel wells will make good hip sockets. The legs aer going to be foam core covered with plastic card. I could resist putting my mek bozy to work on it.

I love it Thanks, two solutions in one!

I was wondering a) what I should do with my spare Gorkamorka trukk bits, and b) what I do for the hips of my third killa kan

As for the size, the dred is similar to a SM dred in size. Google image search and youll find plenty of pics showing the size. A Kan is a little larger then a boy.

As for what they can have, if you read you Orks codex, it tells you all the magical ways to kill things!

After seeing the wonderful works of art from forge world I am having trouble trying to get the concept for the leg and feet. That and I need to make a run to store for some plastic rod. Aside from having to rip the torso apart for a rework, not much is happening one the dred. anuyone got any ideas on an engine??

I've never understood why Kans and Dreads aren't plastic kits, I presume they must be working on some though as they are phasing out all their metal models except special characters.
