If you got to choose (and had to choose just one), what point value would you pick for Warhammer 40,000 tournaments? In other words, what point value do you think creates the best tournament environment?

I like them below 1500pts. My local store has a 555pts tourney with certain restrictions. It runs very fast and the games take alot more strategy than a normal one.

2k. absolutely 2k.

That being said, I'll still give you a 0 if you bring more than 5 eldar skimmers. Don't be that guy.

Less than 1,5 thousand. It takes too much time if it's more than that. In my point of view, that is.

1500.

Scoring Troops proportionaly eats up a lot more of those points, leaving less room for wacky stuff.

Also, the sparser board makes tactical movement important.

1850, it is large enough to allow for more than 1 HQ, 2 troops, and 1 other unit, but is small enough so that nobody takes 5 land raiders and whatnot.

1500 or less. Incorporates more tactical decision making skills rather than raw list ability (or imbalance) imo.

I like big games but it takes a toll in turns played and tends to favor some armies over others in a tournament setting.

I voted for 1750 as a balance but anything in the 1500-1750 range is good.

It really depends on the amount of time you have. If you want a quick game then 1000pts is good, if you want a really long game, then 3-5000pts. But the best game in my opinion is a 2500pt game. It's long enough for you to get into, but not long enough to make you read Standard Bearer (also a good discussion going on).

I love small game, great fun playing really quick snappy 400/500 point games, but they can get a bit samey especially with the same lists, also theres very little room for much variation, especially for more expensive armys, after you have the obligitory 1 HQ, 1 troop(modified the rules slightly) often 2 troops is better, tactically. There's maybe one or two small units of fun stuff, 200pts of termies for example, half the points of your army, no for that reason and because I'm greedy, I reckon 1500 is big enough to fit whatever you want but small enough that spamming takes up to many points to be effective.

I think I should get 2k and my opponent 1K.....

Okay 2K is the better way to go in my opinion. You tend to see more than just the basic lists. I know a lot of people that will not travel (Including myself) for a tourney under 1850 points. Personally I think anything lower should be reserved for buiding leagues and local play.

Too small games and you cannot get those specialist units in that look the best

tactics have no standing in 40k. Fantasy, maybe a bit more, never played fantasy tho.

There is no point limit that will stop people from taking rediculous units of cheesy crap (and i am a proponent for cheesy crap).

2000 points is an amazing point level, it really lets you have to think about what you want to take over other things. with so many points, you have more options to min/max things and it gets hilarious.

So many more options, makes you have to prepare for more things. it really makes for some awesome lists.

I love apocalypse sized games, but you need a full day for a good sized battle, so we usually aim for about 2,500 pts if we have a full day

Usually 1.5k or under. At this level, tactics and luck are worth more than list-building ability.

Not to say I don't enjoy a larger game now and then. When I have the time it's fun to get everything out on the table.

If I was going to do tournaments, less than 1500. Why? That keeps the Howler Monkeys away because they're less likely to play if they don't have 2500+ points to make their cheese festival lists.

Add a "You have exactly zero chance of placing if you bring more than 1 HS/Fast/Elite choice to clean up the rest of the WAAC Howler Monkey Mess and that might make tournaments playable.

Plus add "you have 20 minutes to take your turn or you lose it GO" to make sure the reta... I mean "slow" kids stay away.

I like at least 1500 because one mistake won't destroy any hope of winning like in a 500 pt battle.

I like 1,500. It provides tactical flexibility but yet forces you to choose which units an army is best off with. In a larger game, you can choose 'all of the above', but at 1500 or less you really need to pick and choose units for optimal power/synergy/whatever. Also, it retains strategic value in that each individual units can be a major part of a strategy rather than point filler.

Black Widow Assault Cadre 2000 Points (Under Renovation- Playable) Win-4 Lose-5 Draw-1
Storm Angels 1st Company 2500 Points (DA Codex) (Under Renovation - Playable) Win-3 Lose-4 Draw-3
Corsairs of Fate 1750 Points (Under Construction - Playable) Win-2 Lose-3 Draw-1
Protectorate of Menoth 11 Points (Project Delayed Indefinitely) Win-1 Lose-3 Draw-0
Imperial Guard Regiment (Unnamed) 1000 Points (Project Delayed Indefinitely)
Cygnar 25 Points (Planned) Win-0 Lose-0 Draw-0

Last Game(s): The Spearhead Annihilation Battle between my Storm Angels First Company (Dark Angels) and Skystompa's Waagghh! (Blood Angels) resulted in a MAJOR VICTORY!

1500-1850 is the sweet spot for me.

I hate not finishing games at tournaments and I always seem to get the noobish horde player at higher point values.
