Yeah, peaceful nuclear power, not a front to make nuclear weapons like every other country...

What about tidal or wind power? Nuclear power stations set off alarm bells, and rightly so.

The first British nucler power station actually took power out of the national grid!

This is clearly merely another step in some hideous masterplan.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I don't know which is more humorous, your multiple mispellings in your sentence claiming I live under a rock, or your pitiful belief that anything a dictator would say should be taken at face value.

None of it could possibly be as funny as the weekly dose of 'what Fraz bizarrely overreacts to this week'.

It's Chavez. He likes stirring up the capitalists. It's why he's buds with Ahmadinejad. It's why he called Bush Satan. It's what he does.

Freaking out and thinking he's about to build a bomb to fire at your house is silly.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

@Frazzled: Is that pic taken just before that pic of you on the lawn? Do we now have a complete picture of your mental state in an emergency?

Fraz's internal monologe (in the style of John Stewart's G.W. Bush impression): ...lawn about to be tresspassed... ...by an exploding nuclear bomb... ... better finish this cookie...

With a bit of work there's a haiku in there somewhere.

Close. Action photo last week when the security scanners on the yard went off and I thought hippy treee huggers/zombies were at the door, again. Turns out it was just an ant. Called in an arclight mission just to be sure.

I have a friend who holds dual-citizenship in the US and Venezuela. Last time she went down there to see some family for a week or two she would call and see how things were. Each call back would be prefaced by how great a leader Chavez is and how beautiful the country was under his leadership. Now I know this isn't how she felt so when she got back I asked her about it and she told me that her phones were tapped. They were afraid she was either a journalist or a spy.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Oh, that crazy Hugo!

Nuclear weapons don't really change the situation in Venezuela. We aren't going to invade the country, so the only option is regime change via covert influence. A tactic which neatly sidesteps conventional, strategic concerns.

He could however use it to threaten his neighbors. Its not like he funding narcoterrorists in his neighbors or anything...

Worst case scenario: He uses nuclear weapons on a neighboring state.

This leads organically into a multinational crackdown on Venezuela. Probably featuring air strikes, and mass troop deployments from states like Brazil. The aggregated effect would likely deepen the impulse for communal action. In the end his belligerence could actually strengthen the US position, provided we don't pick up some form of idiot ball.

Different situations. We have decades of experience fighting in the jungles of south america, and a unilateral strike against Venezuela in the wake of a nuclear bombing would be vastly different than a proxy war against the communist east.

As for Chavez gaining nukes, it's not something I would particularly fear. Drug related crime doesn't want nukes and they have a functioning economy and national resources at risk. The big issue would be if they used the weapons against neighboring countries, they aren't very happy with eachother at the moment, but even that would be so unlikely as to be a non issue. Regular open conflict is out of the question, let alone using the trump card to start the fight.

If we had to get into a war because he was using nukes, it would be an anything goes deal without the constraints we had to observe in Vietnam.

Venezuela doesn't have the backing of a hostile superpower, so its unlikely that we would have so many political issues to deal with.

Also, if nuclear weapons were used (the only scenario which would justify hostile action against VZ) its unlikely that the response would be unilateral.

Yep, though we have little reason to actually engage them unilaterally. The rest of South America would probably be more than happy to help us eliminate that kind of rogue element.

Disregarding the whole nuclear weapons issue (I know, right?), I think the last people on earth I would be taking reactor tech from is the Russians. No Way.

Nope. But I know it has a land area greater than the UK, but only about 3-4m people in it, as opposed to about 60 odd million in the UK, so that makes for some huge gardens

We all have to share our houses, so one family works during the day and sleeps in the house at night, and a second family sleeps in the house during the day and works at night, as we don't have room for any more houses :(

I've not seen a garden for many a year... they were all built over some time ago to make more houses.

All of that may be true, except for the tiny population you gave to Texas. We are in fact above 20 million...not counting illegals of course
