I didn't see Crystal Skull in the theater. I picked it up as a used DVD at Blockbuster about 3 months ago. I still haven't watched it. I know they want to make one because it's 1) their baby and 2) it'll make money. But, seriously, not every movie needs (or should even have) a sequel. Or remake. Or digital re-imagining (or whatever Lucas called what he did to Star Wars release). Some things are fine to leave just as they were.

I thought the crystal skull was entertaining. I got the dvd when it came out and watched it.. then haven't touched it since. I still like to have it in the collection though. I don't mind if they make a new one, as long as they don't call it Mutt Jones and the Flower Children or something had have Shia "I grew peach fuzz for eagle eye" labouff take over the franchise

I haven't watched Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for the simple reason that everytime a film franchise has been revisited or prequeled or sequeled a significant amount of time after the origional/s I have been bitterly dissapointed.
For me when a film is released it captures a certain amount of zeitgeist which simply cant be replicated several years on, as the people who watched the origional have themselves moved on and changed.
A lot of the time the only people who seem to enjoy the films are those who have not seen the previous origional/s, much like when the new Star Wars prequels were released. To the 11 and 12 year olds who had never seen the origional trilogy they were great. To those of us who grew up with Star Wars (I refuse to acknowledge it as A New Hope!), the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi the idea of Darth Vader, one of the most iconic bad guys of all time being portrayed as little more than a sulky emo kid was bordering upon sacrilege!
Another prime example of a franchise suffering from constant updates and new chapters are the terminator films, both 1 and 2 were superb and original ideas, 3 was fine as a stand alone action film but in no way compared to the first two. Terminator Salvation was the biggest pile of toss I have seen in a very long time, riddled with continuity errors, terrible dialogue, poor acting and events which just failed ot make sense. This has sadly tainted many peoples veiws of the first two films.

I stand by the South Park view on Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was fine, and then... the ending was too horrible to imagine.
Still, I wont complain (much) if they make another Indiana film.

Here is where the fail begins and ends. He's been so out of touch for years now with what works and what doesn't. Let him produce, he knows the technical stuff, but for the love of god keep him away from the artistic. Anything good he has touched lately has been worse for it. I'm also not sure "active" has been described to George in 15 years. He needs to become friends with a cardio machine or something.

Yes, because his recent films have been box office flops that ruined his career.
I really liked Crystal Skull. The shift in emphasis from Religious stuff to Alien stuff reflects the shift in timeline, and the prominent B-Movies of the time.
I'm looking forward to a fifth installment. And seeing how the first three films weren't sequential in terms of timing (I don't think. While since I've seen them) I'd quite like to see an Indy film from during WW2, once it has properly kicked off. That would clearly rock.
Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny anyone?

Yeah but its not like we have anything else to determine whether its a good film or not other than our own opinion. I mean the oscars are just filled with art house crap.
here i'll predict this years oscar. hmm...... its gonna be one of these
1) a holocaust movie
2) gay movies (nothing against you guys but they can stop throwing it in our face already)
3) a drama movie that will be yet another plot line ripped from old yeller where one of the main characters dies at the end or learns a politically correct life lesson.
although i will say DVD sales reflect the public opinion of the movie pretty strongly

I enjoyed the last film and imo nearly all of Lucas/Spielberg movies are somewhat cheesy/campy but thats part of their appeal and style.
I'm of the mindset where the more the better since all of these guys are getting old as hell (and thus making me feel the same way) and their time is short but at least their film lives forever. No one else makes movies like these guys and they still beat the majority of stuff Hollywood dishes out.

I think you are partially right. I think Lucas is a great idea man. He has a great mind for world building, setting the design conventions, and creating the overarching stories. Where he Fails and he Fails hard is writing and directing the dramatic scenes. He needs to do the outlines, creat the worlds and set the designs, then hand it off to someone who can actually write the damned thing. Empire shows the great things that can happen when this is the case.

Exactly. It is funny because he never wanted to make movies like this in the first place. Experimental cinema and editing are his first loves, not directing. This is from his own mouth, not me guessing.

That just isn't true. Look at the films that have won in the 2000s;
Slumdog Millionaire
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
Crash
Million Dollar Baby
The Return of the King
Chicago
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
You have a swords & sandals hackfest, a fantasy epic, a cops & robbers suspense film and a musical. None of the winners could be described as holocaust movies (you have to go back to 1993 & Schindler's List for that), gay movies (you have to go back to 1969 and Midnight Cowboy), and only one of which has a politically correct life lesson (Crash, which was also a really bad movie ).
The Academy Awards have their vagaries and they don't always get it right - Crash was clearly the worst film nominated in 2005, and I thought Frost/Nixon and The Reader were both better movies in 2008. But your summary above is just wrong, just a popular myth that doesn't match with the Oscars at all. Except there was a seven year difference between T1 and T2. Not that I disagree with your point overly, but there is at least one exception.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

On the subject of Franchise Ressurections in general, I do feel they get a hard press. Why?
Star Wars, Transformers and Indian Jones in particular were defining parts of my childhood. I loved Star Wars, cried when Optimus Prime died, and wanted to become an Archaeologist. NOTHING can compare to that. Lucas could make a film based in any of those three which in terms of plot, production, acting and effects pisses all over the originals, but to me, it could never compare due to the attachment I have to the originals.
Not really going anywhere with this, just pointing out something I'm sure Captain Obvious is about to applaud
