Hey all. K so i have a quick question about Battlewagons. I know for Trukks you budget a loss of about 2-3 a turnish. Is it completely pointless to take a battlewagon by itself?

Unless you take enough trukks to screen the sides until it drops its payload, yes.
Even then, it will be lucky to make it to the other side of the board.

As long as majority of the model has GW parts in it (not sprues or the GW boxes mind you!!) then it's ok.

Throw a Big Mek in there and gun it! Also, keep them cheap and take a few of them if you can afford the models.

Orks can do anything that any other army can do and do it better than they can. However, they cannot do everything that any other army can do. Make sense? If you make an ork assault army, they'll out-assault any other army in 40k. If you make a shooting army, you can outgun IG or Tau. If you go foot-slogging, or mechanized, or kan-wall....all those options make you a completely awesome army, but there's a catch. You can only do one of them at a time with an army list.
If you combine a mechanized and a foot-slogging list, you're going to lose. If you have part assault, party shooting, you're probably going to lose. Your strength is in being able to pick something and be completely awesome at it. So before giving you advice on where to go next with your army, you need to pick a theme and build around it. If you want a bike army, or a shooting army; an outflanking army, mechanized, assault, figure out what your playstyle is and start building your units and armylist around that idea.
THAT is the strength of Orks.
Read the quote.
Don't play just one battlewagon, go all the way or not at all.

Anyone got a figure of how many boyz you need at 3K points?

The problem with horde is that it does not scale well past 1750 points. There are literally only so many bodies you can put on the table before you simply run out of room on a 4' by 6' table. On missions like DoW where you are bringing in the majority of your army from off the table, your options get even less.
If you are going to run a 3k ork army, you will need to go mech in order to get enough room for all your models.
You will want to run with 3-5 battlewagons. 3 of them holding burna boys, or another eliete/heavy choice.
You will want to run with 6 truuks. That will fill out your troop choices.
You will want to run with 1 or 2 battlewagons with Nobs in them. Make sure you have 1 or 2 KFFs in that army.
Fill out your fast attack with deffkoptas or buggies.
That's the best way to build a non-apoc 3k list IMHO.

3000 point ork lists are tricky to build for normal tables without going nob heavy. So I suggest going nob heavy. Individually equiped nobs squads are the dogs bollocks.
Also good are individually equiped nob bikers.
