Subject: Were Red Lorry Yellow Lorry the 1st Goth band?
As the title of the thread asks, was Red Lorry Yellow the 1st Goth rock band? I am not sure if they were preceded by Bauhaus. Actually there were many bands of that particular genre back in the late 80s. Goth rock is very distinct from punk Rick which should be noted. The 1st US Goth rock band to have some commerical success was Type O Negative. It seems like the whole Goth scene is on the decline now.

#gets out his boxes labelled "punk", "goth", "metal" and makes sure to put each artist/band into one, and only one, box.
Johnny Cash has done some very dark tracks (his cover of Nick Cave's 'Mercy Seat', for one). Not sure if this makes him a Goth artist or not.
1979 seems to be the start of Goth, with Joy Division, Bauhaus, Souxie, and the lesser-known UK Decay and Sex Gang Children (amongst others). Surprisingly, Adam And The Ants' early career was pretty goth.

Yeah, that's a good premise for Goth - better than a lot of "Goth" out there!

Well said BlackSpike, black eyeliner, floppy hair and "vampire" clothing do not always a "goth" make.
That bieng said,Bauhaus and Nick Cave are always what jump to mind when one ask me about "goth".
The Damned and T.S.O.L ,I consider more punk/goth.

Do you count the look or the sound or both together as what makes 'Goth'? Speaking as someone who was an original punk back in the mid 70's and who then drifted into Goth soon after I associate the following (in no particular order) as Goth-
The Damned
Siouxie and the Banshees
Sisters of Mercy
Bauhaus
The Mission
Fields of the Nephilim
The Cult
Killing joke
New Model Army
The Cure
This is just off the top of my head. I know a lot of you will disagree but I go for sound more than looks as it is music we're talking about...
And as for Johnny Cash, he might not be Goth but he was a genius, everyone should have at least one of his albums in their collection!
Time to dust of the tail coat and top hat now...

Not a bad list of Goth, but NMA?
Now, I'm a big NMA fan, and most of the bands on that list, but never really considered NMA Goth.
Sure, some stuff is quite dark, and maybe even nihilistic, but there is just something that keeps them apart from Goth.
But as I implied in my first post, I don't think a lot of bands can be cleanly classified into well-defined genres, denying them a place in others.
Music is as music does, and most bands change over time, and play a variety of different stuff.
And yes, Johnny Cash was a genius. A messed-up, twisted, flawed genius (like most geniuses).

Cheers. But what do you call the Goth look? Back in the late 70's/early eighties we tended to wear the black top hat and tails with the white frilled shirt and a lot of the women used to make wedding dresses but in black. The image then went onto the long duster coat with flat cowboy hat and then we had the emergence of the plastic Goths/baby bats when the Matrix came out...
I still have the tail coat and hat myself.

My hair was naturaly very dark brown/black and my skin is very pasty due to my Scottish decent. As for the eye liner, only the girls used to wear that and piercings were on the ears and side of the nose only for the Goths although I still have my septum pierced from my punk days... The weird and wonderful piercings started with the baby bats.

Most of the Goth folk I recall from back in "my day" (80s early 90s) didn't have alot of piercings,as Mick A said, that seems to be a newer trend, most just wore a lot of black vintage clothing(tux coats and such),but I do recall they wore alot of make up,both male and female, but perhaps that was just in my area (New Orleans).
I had a few friends who were "goth",but for the most part they didn't hang around with "us" (the spikey leather jacket, doc marten, mohawk crowd).

Mick
In America the "new wave" thing didn't seem to really take hold outside of California and New York, and then only briefly, sure, the music was every place, and lots of suburban kids(mostly female) wore Duran Duran shirts, but I don't really recall many "new wave" folk, lots of punks, goths, skinheads and metal kids, but no new wave folk.
Of course I've always belived Kickboy face's motto " there is no such thing as new wave,it is the polite thing to say when you are trying to explain your not into boring bland rock n roll, but you don't dare to say 'punk" becuase your afraid they will kick you out of the party and not give you coke anymore."

I appeared on a programme once about Goths, and how apparently, they are on average smarter than any other sub culture (some Uni Professor researched it).
The one thing we took from that? Nobody agrees on what exactly Goth is, so it seems churlish to try and slap a direct definition on it.

I do have to agree, the "goth" folk did seem to be far more inteligent than the rest of us,when ever I visited one of my "goth" friends I was amazed by the shear mass of books they owned,I meen,we were inteligent(when compared to the average knuckle dragger),but the "goth" kids seemed to far surpass us.
Then again,we did spend alot of our time getting drunk, getting in to fights, chatting up girls(even the "goth" ones) and jumping off of stages and falling on our heads.

Might be to do with the sort of literature you read when younger. Lots of Victorian era stuffs kicks off an affinity for the dress, and the rest sort of follows.

True, the vast majority of what I read in those days could perhaps best be compared to "The Coming Insurrection",tons of "the system is/has failed" books and zines, along with lots of Nietzsche,Marx,Freud etc, plus lots of horror and such.

Goth culture in the US and Europe are two different animals entirely. They might look alike in terms of appearance and listen mostly to the same music but to be honest Goth culture in the US has a high concentration of 'white trash' that are looking for a different element as opposed to rednecks and jocks. In Europe Goths tend to come from the middle class and as such have better opportunity for education.
